Does it really take more than being named Lesbos to make your island getaway a destination for gay tourists? Yes, but the branding helps. At this year’s 10th annual International Women’s Festival, in the Greek island’s Eressos village, German, British, Dutch and Scandinavian sapphic ladies are flocking to “women-only walks and sunset cruises, breathing and drumming workshops, Greek dance classes and lesbian film screenings.” Which is no small accomplishment: When the event launched in 2000, Eressos’ mayor — of a heavily Greek Orthodox community — threatened to sue organizers and cast our the lesbians. Now, us dykes have our run of the place.

Well since the term “Lesbian” is actually derived from the island of Lesbos it’s not really a corny name.
“Lesbian” is a tern derived from the (presumably) queer poet who lived on the island, Sappho and wrote about her love of women.
Just an FYI.

@Jane: Yeah, I don’t know how they didn’t know that. Kind of embarrassed for queerty.

Ok this is criminally ignorant, Queerty, you really should be ashamed.
We get “lesbian” because the divine poet (and famed lover of ladies) Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos. It’s the lesbian Eden / Shangrila / Atlantis.
Spend a little less time coming up with the puns for the daily naked hot guy pics and just a moment going to… I don’t know wikipedia at least… before calling the origin of the word “lesbian” corny.

The word “sapphic” comes from the same source
