Grooming: The Art of Shaving

With The Grain, Mary

I hate shaving. It wastes so much time and I don’t have the patience for something that cuts into my bonding time with Matt Lauer each morning. And now I find out I’ve been doing it all wrong.

The Art of Shaving shows us guys the proper way to shave. Key things to remember: shave after a hot shower, splash on after-shave, and always(!) shave with the grain. They also say that it’s so worth investing in pre-shave oil, alum block, and an old time shaving brush. I don’t know how I’m going to squeeze more beauty products into my already overflowing medicine cabinet, but I’ll be damned before I evict any of my Kiehl’s hair products.

The Art of Shaving has some really classily designed shaving sets. OK, great for my dad, but what if you’re looking for something that matches your West Elm bath towels? For funkier sets I like the selection at Eshave. My favorite, the Flame Set, looks like Twiggy clutching an Olympic torch in one hand and an oversized-duster in the other.

Yeah, shaving is a lot of work, but Saturday night you’re more apt to score in the Castro if you don’t look like Fidel Castro.
