You already know where Sen. John McCain stands on protecting GLBTs with hate crimes legislation: He’s against it. But just in case his speech on the Senate floor wasn’t enough, here’s the senator talking to Fox News about how tacking on hate crimes to the Defense Department bill is an “abuse of power.”
Listen, we get McCain is a respected war vet. We actually do want to hear what he’s got to say about military issues, even if he’s playing politics against the Democrats (read: the F-22 program). But there are some things there just isn’t any room for debate, and that’s providing queers with the same federal protections other discriminated classes receive.
(In case you were wondering, no, Sen. McCain did not vote for the budget bill.)
InExile
With plummeting poll numbers, it is really a shame Obama did not get gay issues moving sooner. So much for hopey and changey!
theda bara
@InExile:
His poll numbers could be at 100 percent and we could have our rights…the World’s environment is still threatened, the economy is going to tank soon.
Yeah but we will be able to get married on a shit pile. Great.

@theda bara:
Your attitude toward civil rights is as outmoded and old-fashioned as the assumed movie star name you stole and the term vamp which she made famous.

Like Theda, were you also born in 1885?
Women’s Suffrage in 1885, was an idea whose time had not quite yet come either
schlukitz
@schlukitz:
World War 1 broke out in 1914.
Women’s Suffrage could not have picked a worse time to worry about the rights of women either, according to your stupid logic, Theda.

@schlukitz:
In 2085 we will look back and wish we had engaged our passion towards more noble causes like the sanctity of earth’s biosphere with vigor.
I am for civil rights for all right now, but I’m just being a realist as I see planet stumble towards a dark fututre.
I went to the high school for environmental studies…I’ve been studying thins issue for years…excuse me for being well rounded and concerned.
BTW my favorite silent star is Clara Bow.
Whats yours?
theda bara
@schlukitz:
Am I stupid? That wasn’t altogether a nice thing to say to me.
theda bara
@schlukitz:
WW1 is not the same thing as environmental issues, which impact everyone including all species.
Jon
wow, theda went to high school.
theda bara
@Jon:
yikes. you guys are rough.

@theda bara:
i’m 18 you torrential thunderstorm.
theda bara
@schlukitz:
are you fat and ugly by any chance?
InExile
@theda bara: Yes, yes, I know EVERYTHING ELSE IS MORE IMPORTANT than our own civil rights! Like I said, so much for hopey and Changey.
I really start to wonder if years of oppression makes gays feel like they do not deserve equality?
I disagree, I think our equality is the single MOST IMPORTANT issue. We are living in the same world as everyone else without the same rights and benefits, but of coarse we usually pay more in taxes to pay for everyone else’s benefits.
InExile
@theda bara: Oh, and I am tired of waiting for equality, 40 years since Stonewall and not much has changed. I think we have been very patient.
InExile
@theda bara: Re: Comment #11 He is a stud honey, but nice try! He probably would not be interested in you.
B-Gad
Since when could the government only work on one issue at a time? There are committees for a reason. It’s the same bullshit answer that Gov. Douglas gave when trying to crush the marriage equality movement in Vermont’s government. Looks like the other issues are being addressed just fine, even with equal marriage rights being afforded to every consenting adult couple, should they so choose.
The most frustrating thing is not that we are making such a hard push for equal rights; it’s that we have to make a push at all for something that shouldn’t be an issue in the first place.
Michael W.
Isn’t this the same guy nearly a third of gays wanted to be president, mostly Clintonistas like InExile?
Guess Hate Crimes would be on its way to a presidential veto if they had their way. Then again it never would’ve made it this far at all.
TANK
John McCain is against gay rights?! I’m…I’m…I’m…at a loss! I’m shocked and floored that he’d be the pastiest whitest republican antigay antiprogressive ex candidate around… It’s really surprising that this used up elderly husk of flesh is opposed to equal protection…I would have thought he’d be a fierce advocate, what with leslie graham being a closeted flaming homosexual who probably has aids.
TANK
@TANK:
Lindsey! I knew it was some uber fey name.

When you graduate and prepare your resumé, be sure to include this very important piece of information about yourself.
Hire me NOW…while I still know everything!

@Michael W.: I agree, if Hillary was the President all the LGBT issues would be done along with health care! We would have other things to worry about.
Tim
@InExile:
Sorry but I have to disagree with you there. Hillary could barely bring herself to say the word gay during the primaries and she would have taken the same path her husband and Obama has. I did have greater hope for President Obama because I didn’t think he was a calculating politician like Hillary and Bill. Obviously I was wrong.
M Shane
@No. 20 · InExile; How amazingly ignorant! Hillary would have the same Congress and the same set of more imanent priorities! I could just gag everytime you wishful and uninformed clods drag Hillary out of the toilet. Mom just didn’t make it because she was such a bitch and nobody trusted her. Considering that she took more money than any but one congressperson from health industry lobbiests (hundreds of thousands of $ in 2006) and that her husband created all the problems, it’s very doubtful that she would have done anything in healthcare and gay respects. Why on earth would she put Gay issues before the economy, war, the environment : don’t be a fool. This is a right wing Congress and voter base. No one would take the absurdities (to them) in a single gulp. Only Herr Bush was a dictator, because Congress is largely bought off by Big Busuiness and the military.
InExile
@Tim: Obama ran from gays like the plague during the primary. What we see now is just more of the same. Did Obama make any appearances at gay clubs? No, but Hillary did at the Abbey in WeHo. Nothing is happening because he never had a plan of his own.
InExile
@M Shane: Yes some things would be the same, except we would have LEADERSHIP at the top. Big difference!
Cam
@theda bara: You said “His poll numbers could be at 100 percent and we could have our rights…the World’s environment is still threatened, the economy is going to tank soon.
Yeah but we will be able to get married on a shit pile. Great.”

your post is the same typical B.S. that anti gay people and gay apologists are constantly spouting. Oh, boo hoo, they CAN”T worry about civil rights, gee, there is SO much else going on that they have to worry about.
Well I have news for you. There is ALWAYS something going on. If there wasn’t the Cap and Trade Legislation they would be working on a Road Reauthorization bill for the states, if there wasn’t two wars going on we would be involved in negotiantions between Israel and Palestine, if there wasn’t the Economic Crash we would be involved in Trade disputes with China. There is ALWAYS something going on.
Dealing with more than one thing is the President and Congresses Job. Just like the Supreme Court takes more than one case a year, Congress looks at and votes on multiple bills every day/week. In fact, they are looking at a bill right now that would allow people with concealed weapons permits in one state to cross boarders to other states that outlaw concealed weapons while still holding their guns. Takes up a TON of floor tine in the Congress. Gee, guess they have time for THAT bill but not anything related to us.
So again, if you think that the President and the Congress are such idiots that they can only concentrate on one thing at a time you are a fool.
As for McCain. He is also against gay adoption. His wife adopted a dying baby girl from an orphanage in India. I guess McCain feels it would be better to leave other orphans there dying instead of letting “Queers” adopt them. The man’s a bigot.

mccain’s was a senile old fool during the campaign, and he’s a senile old fool now. No surprises there.
emb
er, “mccain” without the apostrophe “s”. I’m a senile old fool too.
Jason
I am very confused by the title of this news feed. Did I miss something and McCain is advocating that murder, assault, rape or battery be legalized against gay people? Obviously he isn’t suggesting this but is likely against adding to the asinine hate based laws. How long will the list of extra-protected groups get? With the hatred between Republican and Democrats we should add them as a special group too. Fat people on an airplane might drive me to hate all Fat people; protect them too. Stupid and Ignorant folks are annoying as well and might just raise my indignation. How bout we call murder, rape, assault and battery what they are; they are hate crimes in general against a fellow human and the victims ethnicity, sex, orientation, weight, and political affiliation are irrelevant.
schlukitz
@Cam:

A view, by the way, that is shared by the members of the religious right as well.
Better a dead baby or an an unwanted and thrown out gay child working the streets of NYC to sell their bodies, than being in a safe, caring environment that “Queers” can afford them.
And people like this call themselves the “Children” of God???
Cam
@schlukitz:
Amen!
