  DIVINE MISS M

Happy Birthday, Madonna, From Those Who Knew You When!

Let us all celebrate Madonna’s birthday (it’s today, as you surely know) by gazing upon this remarkable 1983 ad for what was undoubtedly an amazing weekend of entertainment in Ft. Lauderdale.

On Saturday: “That Jungle Jezebel” Divine. And on Sunday: “The Magical” Madonna.

The only way this could be any better is if they actually shared the stage and did a call-and-response rendition of “Barnacle Bill the Sailor.” Oh, to be a fly on the dressing-room wall of The Copa that weekend.

To help you imagine, here’s a remix of one of the numbers Divine performed that weekend, “Native Love”:

Oh, and we should probably post something Madonna-related too, since it’s her birthday and all. Here’s an MTV tribute from 1999, which coincidentally also featured a cast of drag queens.

Happy Birth Day Madonna. Congratulations on the sucsses of MDNA and the tour. They say your goingto break your own record, 3rd time in a row as the most sucssesful tour for a solo artist. And they said you would be a one hit wonder. What did they know? Can’t wait to see you in Atlanta in November 2012!

Hate all you want. But the truth is that Madonna is THE GREATEST FEMALE MUSIC STAR that ever lived. By the way the MDNA album is the years 5th biggest selling album worldwide and received generally positive if not rave reviews. I don’t get how some people who probably never even listened to it say it’s a bad album. By the way Happy Birthday Madonna aka. Queen of Pop

There is and always has been only one “Divine Miss M” and that is Bette Midler.
Perhaps ,if Madonna took singing and acting lessons, she might;in the fullness of time become a pale blotched-out ghost of a copy of a true star.
At the moment, even that scratchy-voiced hag,Celine Dion,is a better singer and performer than Madonna has ever been.
I am sorry that Madonna is such a sleezy bitch but even that can’t improve her skimpy abilities.

Please Myles give it a rest! Fact Madonna biggedt selling female artist of all time. Fact highest grosding solo touring (male or female) artist of all time. Fact more top ten songs (38) on the Billboard Hot 100 and more number 1 dance songs (42 soon to be 43) than any artist in history. Fact richest female artist of all time with a net worth of 650 million not including this years MASSIVE haul. I like Bette but she’s not even close to being in Madonnas stratosphere. As for her acting I agree that like most singers she’s pretty bad but so was Elvis. As for her vocals she has a really good voice when SHE WANTS to show it off just listen to any of her ballads or her EXCELLENT vocals in Evita she also an accomplished dancer plays instruments and writes and produces (with collaborators ) about 90 percent of her music. Her 30 year staying power is lengendary and her MDNA Tour is already tagged to be this years highest grossing tour. Like Susan Sarandon said the story of women in music can be divided into the pre Madonna era and the post Madonna era
The definition of a true star one of the greatest of all time

Oh how the trolls hate on Madonna. She’s made incredible music, had amazing performances and tours and is still a force. The video goes to show that she was already ICONIC in 1999 before anyone even know who Britney, Beyonce, Christina, Rihanna or GaGa even were. Face it she might not be the best singer, dancer or actress but Madge is still the greatest and most important female arist of all time.

“most important female arist of all time”

      I lol’d.

While that’s debatable, she also holds the record for the largest sales drop of a CD in music history. Way to go Madonna! Next time just crap on a blank CD and maybe you’ll break your own record – title it something different though or you’ll make people think they bought MDNA again.!

OK here we go again. MDNA DID NOT HAVE THE LARGEST SALES DROP IN HISTORY. IT HAD THE LARGEST SECOND WEEK DROP FROM A NUMBER 1 ALBUM IN SOUNDSCAN HISTORY AND SINCE BILLBOARD STARTED USING SOUNDSCAN IN 1991 THAT MEANS THE LAST 21 YEARS NOT SINCE THE BILLBOARD CHARTS BEGAN IN 1952. HAVE WE CLEARED THAT UP? AND GUESS WHO HELD THAT TITLE BEFORE MADONNA? IT WAS LADY GAGA AND HER 99 CENTS BORN THIS WAY CD FUNNY HOW THE MEDIA DIDN’T MAKE AS BIG A DEAL WHEN GAGA HAD IT. BY THE WAY MDNA SET ANOTHER RECORD BY DENUTING AT #1 IN OVER 50 COUNTRIES AN ITUNED RECORD. IN THE UK MADONNA OFFICIALLY BECAME THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SOLO ARTIST ON THE ALBUMS CHART WHEN MDNA BECAME HER 12TH NUMBER 1 ALBUM BREAKING HER TIE WITH ELVIS FOR SOLO ARTIST WITH THE MOST NUMBER 1 ALBUMS. DID YOU HEAR THE MEDIA REPORTING ON THAT?

@thetruth: You conveniently left out that the only reason she got to number one was due to concert ticket tie-ins.

How’s the album doing now? Is she even in the top 100?

MDNA IS ALSO CURRENTLY THE 5 BIGGEST SELLING ALBUM OF THE YEAR AND SINCE WERE ALMOST 3/4 INTO 2012 IT HAS A VERY GOOD CHANCE OF MAKING THE TOP 10 YEAR END BEST SELLERS. THAT’S HARDLY THE FLOP HATERS ARE MAKING IT OUT TO BE SINCE NO ONE EVEN BUYS CDS ANYMORE IT IS ALL ABOUT THR TOURING WHICH IN THAT CASE MADONNA IS UNRIVALED WITH THE YEARS HIGHEST GROSSING TOUR! BY THE WAY MDNA ALSO HAD UNTIL JUSTIN BIEBERS ALBUM THR HIGHEST FIRST WEEK SALES OF ANY ALBUM THIS YEAR THAT COULD ALSO BE A REASON FOR THR ALBUMS HUGE SECOND WEEK SALES DROP. MDNA IS ALSO THE BEST SELLING ALBUM THIS YEAR RELEASED BY AN AMERICAN ARTIST

WHY WOULD I NEED TO HELP MADONNAS SALES? SHE IS THE BIGGESY SELLING FEMALE ARTIST OF ALL TIME ACCORDING TO GUINNESS BOOK IN 2012 SHE HAS SOLD 320 MILLION ALBUMS SINCE 1983 WHAT PART OF THAT DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND? ALSO THEIR IS NO MONEY TO BE MADE ON ALBUM SALES NOWADAYS ITS ALL ABOUT THE TOURING AND THE MERCHANDISE. HELL MADONNA WILL MAKE MORE MONEY OFF THE MERCHANDISE OF HER TOUR THAN THE ACTUAL ALBUM SALES. NOT TO MENTION THE 2-3 MILLION PER SHOW MADONNA HERSELF POCKETS. AS FOR THE CD/ TOUR TICKETPROMOTION IT WAS ONLY DONE IN THE US AND THE CD WASN’T GIVEN AWAY FOR FREE WHEN YOU BOUGHT A TICKET YOU WERE ASKED WHETHER YOU WANTED THE ALBUM OR NOT. IF YOU SAID YES THE PRICE OF THE CD WAS ADDED TO THE ALREADY HIGH TICKET PRICE I SHOULD KNOW CAUSE THAT’S HOW I GOT THE CD AND I PAID 11DOLLARS EXTRA. AGAIN GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT.

Its all a matter of opinion. But statistics wise album sales number of hit songs and record breaking concert tours she is. Just like Elvis has all the stats for a male artist yet many don’t consider him the greatest. By the way Barbara Striesand and Aretha Franklin are probably the 2 greatest female VOCALISTS in music history.

@Matt: No, she’s just the most successful, top selling, top grossing, more Top 10 Hits on the Hot 100 of ANYONE in the HISTORY of recorded music, artist. (That includes Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson….and also the people I imagine you admire based upon your silly comment…Gaga, Katy, Rihanna, etc….)
Therefore based on numbers, success, longevity, and the fact that you took the time out of your day to trash talk someone you hate, Madonna is and always will, be the epitome of a legend.

I feel that every single female recording artist in any musical genre that has come along since Madonna, owes her a debt of gratitude. She re-wrote the rules on a what a woman (or anyone for that matter) could and should do in both music and popular culture in general. Is she a great musical innovator? No. But she has been able to make music and make history over and over again, despite not having a strong musical background. Certainly if it wasn’t for Madonna, we wouldn’t have Britney Spears, Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Nicki Minaj, Lil’ Kim, Rihanna, Kylie Minogue and countless others, but even diva types like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Adele, and Beyonce Knowles would not have made it far as they did, were it not for Madonna.

It’s funny: back in the 1980s, many people thought that Madonna was a bad influence on children and society, and instead championed relatively wholesome acts like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. I imagine that many hoped that Madonna would develop a drug problem and check into rehab and die a tragic death. Ironically, it was Jacko and Whitney who had the drug problems and died tragic deaths, and Madonna continues today to make her way through life. Perhaps if they and others had Madonna’s strength and drive, they’d be alive today. Not many people give Madonna credit for surviving the entertainment industry without checking into rehab and having public breakdowns and amassing massive debts.

Alex very true. In fact every female artist that you mentioned has listed her as an influence. Not to mention female artists outside of pop like Lil Kim,Liz Phair, and Tori Amos have also called her an influence. Also people do hate the fact that she’s still going strong like HOW DARE SHE? It just makes them so mad and I love it! But haters try to diminish her by saying she’s old or that she has no talent ( which is ridiculous as anybody who’s seen her live would tell you the woman has talent in spades). Or that her career is over (looking at you Elton) despite evidence to the contrary. I mean this year alone her superbowl performance became the most watched TV show in US history having moreviewers than the game itself. She is also on the years highest grossing tour and one that will be among the highest grossing of all time! And has an album that will be among the 10 biggest sellers of thr year worlwide. Not to mention her record extending 38th top ten hit and 2 soon to be 3 further number 1 dance songs. Heck even her condensed Olympia concert became the most watched video on YouTube for thr week. Did I also mention that she’s due to pocket between 300 -500 million this year bringing her another world record for highest annual earnings for a musical performer in history.

@thetruth: I hope you know the reason Lady Gaga’s second week drop was so massive was because the first week sales were so massive. However, that wasn’t the case for Madonna. Her first week sales were around 400k and it still dropped more than Lady Gaga’s and that’s pretty pathetic.

You’re also a hypocrite. If you are going to act like the albums sold for 99c don’t count, then that means Gaga sold around 700,000 first week and her second week drop was NOT even close to being the highest second week drop in history. :)
