• GLAAD takes on NY Post, again:
The Post’s Oct. 4 edition contained a Page Six item about an upcoming dating show on Fox Reality Channel (also a News Corporation property) called There’s Something About Miriam. The item referred to Miriam, a transgender woman from Mexico, using the slur “she-male.”
…
GLAAD contacted Page Six editor Richard Johnson this morning to discuss the description of Miriam. His e-mailed response read, “You’re kidding me, aren’t you? I would have used ‘chick with a dick’ but we’re as [sic] family newspaper.”
Yeah, right.
• Anti-Violence Project’s Clarence Thomas on accused Michael Sandy killer Anthony Fortunato’s courthouse coming out:
First, given the facts of the case that are by now well-known, the sexual orientation, actual or alleged, of Fortunato or indeed any of the defendants is immaterial.
If Fortunato is indeed gay, then we can only imagine that his “coming out” last month was a vain attempt to unleash a red herring for a nice swim around the courthouse. If he is not, then this was a despicable tactic from a desperate defense.
In any case, it was a craven, messy thing to do.
And, of course, keeps journos on their toes.
How about we take this to the next level?

Maybe I’m behind the times or out of touch, but I didn’t realise “she-male” was now a slur either.

seriously? you dont think that she-male is a slur?

I think the problem with she-male is that it implies a freakishness that other terms avoid. It’s also fairly inaccurate, since (I think) most transgendered people identify with one sex or the other, and rarely both at the same time. In this case, it’s clear that the writer has no regard for the humanity of the woman, and in that case his use of the term is crude at best. I think he intended it to be somewhat hurtful to the woman and definitely wanted it to foment negative feelings to her in his readers. Therefore, I’d say in this case, it was a slur.

…let alone the fact that “shemale” is used almost exclusively to fetishize and then commoditize trans women, generally for the profit of straight-identified males.
or you could just google the word, see the top ten hits are all pornographic, and figure out that it’s probably not a term for polite company. Or in any way respectful.

Since WHEN was she-male NOT a slur???
