My boyfriend is certain that Hillary Clinton, if she’d been elected president, would have been a passionate, ballsy supporter of gay rights. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” would already be history, he insists, and it’s hard for me to argue. Not because he’s necessarily right — we’ve been betrayed by the Clintons before (Bill signed “don’t ask, don’t tell” and DOMA into law in the first place) — but because it’s impossible to argue with him about all the progress being made on the civil rights front in the parallel universe where Hillary Clinton is president. He can’t actually prove that things would be better under President Hillary Clinton, but I can’t prove things would be as bad or worse. All he knows for sure is that — seven months in — things are bad under Obama.

Has it ever occured to ppl that maybe just maybe they have a plan far ahead from what we know. Get healthcare this year, do immigration nxt year when there will be elections where hispanics will be important (ofcourse we know reps will mostly be against and well they will lose a lot of votes b/c they’ll get racial not to mention how they treated Sotomayor) and once the Dems win more seats nxt year we’ll have a bigger majority to pass most if not all of these laws into effect including repealing DODT, DOMA, and many more LGBT rights, among many other things that they want to pass.

I thought the article was pretty tongue-in-cheek but with a clear point of view. I don’t see where it would be considered “racist.” Was Mr. Savage a racist back when he was an Obama supporter during the election? Or is he only called a racist because he is upset with Obama’s backtracking on LGBT issues? Accusations of racism seem to be the default defense that Obama supporters immediately go to instead of actually debating the critics on the issues. And sadly, Obama’s actions as president have been a far cry from what his promises during the election led us to believe.

Sorry but I think this is a simplistic view. It’s pie in the sky to think the Democrats will pick up seats in 2010. More than likely we will lose some seats in both the House and Senate. Once that happens it is even less likely that GLBT legislation would be passed. Of course this will give the president perfect cover because then he will say sorry I’d love to get these things past but I don’t have the legislative votes. He doesn’t want to take a politic stand on GLBT issues plain and simple.

Time will tell, Dems and Libertarians may be the two majority parties in the future, both liberal or moderate on the social issues, but differing on things like government, law, economy etc.

Actually with Obama’s poll numbers already starting to free fall out from under him after the Gates”gate” fiasco and the Healthcare debacle ready to drag him further down; I can easily see a scenario in which a Democrat could and should challeng Obama in a primary fight for the Dem. nomination (The Dems have proven that their own political survival is always parmount. If Obama tanks and is a drag on the party, they will jump ship to whomever they think will help them keep their jobs). It should also be noted that there was one Democrat who just recently got a higher voter approval ranking than Obama in the latest polls (it was Hillary Clinton) And with the huge voter dissatisfaction with both the Dems and The Repubs that I can see (not as easily, but still possibly) a real run by a third party candidate.
The LGBT voting block may yet hold considerable sway in the upcoming election.

Regardless of how wrong or right Savage is, how does it help the debate to frame it with such sexual innuendo? How are we to be taken seriously? Savage and Perez and those like them aren’t helpful. Frankly, most of the time when Savage opens his mouth in a televised appearance, I’m embarrassed. Sure, I enjoy his advice columns like everyone else… but does he have to carry over the same style when approaching important LGBT issues?
Also would you folks be turning on Hillary just as fast as Obama if she were president? Provided the outcomes thus far had been the same?

I’m not throwing in the towel yet for Obama, but the campaign promises weren’t vague as Michael@Leonard Matlovich points out.
And that defense of DOMA is just completely over the top. Did anyone read Joe Solomonese’s pretty scathing reply to Obama a few weeks ago? He’s pretty laid back, but that letter wasn’t.
Of course, as I’ve said a few times, often I wonder why I let any of this stuff bother me. It is not as if the right to marry would change my personal life at all! And even if “equality” happens at every legal level tomorrow, it will take decades to truly make an impact. Civil rights was 1964 and quite a few people are still racist, although less and less.
And no, I don’t think disagreeing with Obama or pointing out his failings automatically makes one a racist.

After looking at different sources, I see that Kensey estimated that at least 10 percent of all men were more or lest homosexual, while other data suggests that 6.8% of all males and 3.6% of all women identify as homosexual (this excludes those who are active in homosexual behavior, yet are unable to identify as such…possibly due to shame and societal pressure. I apologize for my previous error, I was pulling that Data from the NARTH website, which is relatively anti-gay, thusly biases its figures.
I am really so sorry for misinforming, and as a Christian, I should certainly know better. I think this has made me rethink my position.
Here is my new position: As a Christian, my own interpretation of scripture tells me that homosexuality is a sin–that is just my own understanding. Perhaps you have a different point of view. So, as an American Citizen, living in a pluralistic society, a free society, a society that recognizes all faiths, as well as freedom of expression and free association, I must relent in order to preserve this ideal of an open society that has made the USA a beacon of hope, liberty and a place wherein dreams can be realized.
This new found perspective renders my old ideas incompatible with my wish to be a better American; those ideals that limitted the liberties of a class of people and approached governing from a theocratic basis, I now see as anti-American and a slippery slope which places the freedoms of all at risk.
My humblest apology to you all.

I saw Dan Savage when he was on Real Time With Bill Maher last year. I was a fierce Hillary supporter at the time and saw Dan do a section where he talked about being gay for Obama. It sounded as though he presented this case that Obama was a very likeable guy.
While Dan did avoid stating a preference for one candidate over another, he did mention that he understood our party’s infatuation with him.
Another thing to remember is that we have a VERY big mess on our hands and there are many things out there that affect EVERYONE (that includes us) and I think those are more important things to worry about.
I would rather the President spend more time trying to create a job market where I make more money than trying to make so that I can get married. When he accomplishes the first, I’ll be more interested in the second.
