Sorry, do-gooding Idaho wrestling high school boys, but only the girls may wear bikini tops to attract customers for your fund-raising car wash.
In an instance of high school stupidity and oversensitivity, this Boise-area high school shut down the men’s wrestling team’s attempt to out-do the cheerleaders across the street by donning bikini tops of their own, something they’ve been doing for three years. But when a single caller phoned in to complain — “Boys are dressing like girls, it’s the apocalypse!” — the team was forced to disrobe. Instead, they’re wearing tees with bikini tops drawn on them.
Which begs the question: If the lady cheerleaders can show off their sexiest assets, why not let the guys go shirtless?
Also: THIS IS HIGH SCHOOL.
How about we take this to the next level?

Frankly, I’d prefer them to go shirtless rather than wearing bikini tops (drawn or worn, either way).

These people need to get a life.

“I received a complaint from a member of the community in regards to the boy car wash and what she informed me was that some of our athletes had put on bikini tops and they were flashing cars, lifting the bikini tops as they were driving along,” said Joe Yochum of the Meridian School District.
“That’s not how we want the students to represent themselves and the school district and that’s why we said that’s inappropriate and we can’t do that any longer,” Yochum said.
You know, I normally don’t ‘get’ teen-aged humor, but…this is actually pretty sharp.
Typical high-school administrator dead-ender drone mentality–“We don’t want our students showing any imagination, or creativity, or sense of humor, God forbid a semi-spicy, mischievous one.”
Couldn’t the boys have just worn wrestling singlets? I’m guessing there would be some clean trucks in Boise.

They should teach classes for the adults on how to MIND YOUR OWN BLANKING BUSINESS.

This is absolutely ridiculous. It’s not only an attack on stupid “moralistic” grounds, it’s also an attack on capitalism itself.
Christ sakes, we’ve all seen commercials on tv that might be considered more offensive than anything these kids are doing.
Talk about stifling creativity?

I think the cheerleaders should be made to wear full T-shirts, too, to even the playing field. It’s odd how the person complaining sees no difficulty with young, unmarried girls, flaunting that much skin, then getting the bikinis soaking wet on top of that. Gender bias. Two-tiered system. Inequality. Aren’t they actually teaching the females that using your body to make money is ok?
Do the guys have to wear T-shirts when they go swimming, too? Wow, what a backward community. I’m amazed they don’t have to wear socks with their sandals while they wash the cars. LOL
And… Question – When I went to the KTVB’s video report, I didn’t hear anything about the “Boys are dressing like girls, it’s the apocalypse!” comment. Where did that come from?

Oh god…this is my state. As if we didn’t have enough to be embarassed about with Larry Craig??

How long before they’re required to wear burkas?

I’ve actually been to the tiny little town of Meridian, Idaho twice to visit a friend; some of my only trips outside NJ. Let me say that in general, the town is filled with great, caring people. I ended up carrying some bags along a road with a threatening rainstorm, and you’d be amazed how stranger after stranger would come along, stop their car, and offer you a lift. In NJ, you’d spray’em with mace and run away. 🙂 People mean it when they ask how you are, volunteer to help someone they learn is out-of-state with directions and information, and one person even helped me find a room when my second visit unknowingly coincided with a state fair and most hotels were booked (I never thought hotels could be booked solid in Idaho!).
Keep in mind they only had one complaint, and don’t let that color your opinion of Meridian. I did get involved in a discussion that turned to gays while I was there, and there was not one bigoted Meridian in the bunch I talked to. Really, it’s a great little town.

Glad people are friendly in Meridian! Any chance the complainer was a school board member or some such type? I wouldn’t mind young male athletes washing my car…..no matter what they have on! 🙂
