That is simply a lie! As of the latest CDC statistics, there are more heterosexuals living in the US with HIV/AIDS than there are homosexuals. Funny, Kenya has approximately 8% of it’s population with AIDS, Nearly 2 1/2 times the rate in DC. Nigeria, which is IN West Africa has OVER 3% of it’s population with AIDS even though she claims that DC’s rate is much higher than West Africa, Namibia has over 15%, Botswana has over 20%, South Africa has 18%, Zambia has 15%. So I’m curious, DC’s rate is a cause for concern so why is she bothereing lying about the rates? Is she just trying to act like DC is some 3rd world area comparable to countries that need Western Aid in a bid to act like the Council’s vote is just another step towards full collapse? My comment to her is, if you have to lie to make your case, perhaps you don’t have a case to begin with.

It’s obvious that this is propaganda courtesy of right wing conservatives. Unfortunately, nothing to benefit the general public will come about unless it fits into the agenda of the bureaucrats re-election into the offices they already hold. Even more unfortunate is that the general public has less of a say in this than do other politicians. Generating interest from other congressmen and governmental office holders is given priority over the general public. It would seem that officials have a homogeneous agenda where they express very vague general differences. Then, in attempt to have concrete evidence of their stands on different issues they hire second-rate research agencies (in attempt to save campaign money) to come up with misleading statistics based on nothing but a small sample size combined with opinions. How these reports come about and are deemed acceptable are only because the agency hired is complacent in the fact that they get more money and more interest depending on how often they can match their research results with the politician’s agenda.
I agree, we will soon witness our government start taking communist stands on issues that should be decided by the populous.

Um… yeah. This woman’s article comes as no surprise to me. While historically Democratic, the black community is largely socially conservative. Being central to the community and directing many past social and political actions churches have a lot of influence. So the black community – especially those in affluent circles – will vote along the same lines as the ‘religious right’ since they hold the same rigid view of the text that dictates their morality. (Due to its Catholic and Protestant base, the American Hispanic population also shares this politically liberal/socially conservative characteristic.)

I am a white, gay man who works mostly with African Americans in my job. I stay out of the debates, but I listen a lot. The level of superstition and misinformation amongst my black co-workers is amazing. I have on occasion found it necessary to correct erroneous statements about gay people. I have also pointed a couple of people to sources of information about cancer when some have claimed cancer (as if it is one disease) is contagious.
Discussions I hear about HIV point to a complete failure in the effort to get information to black Americans. I think part of it has to do with so much of this information coming from preachers. Whatever the ethnicity, preachers are a lousy source of information for anything related to sex. They simply cannot avoid couching everything in terms of sin and shame. I tried to correct some information about HIV and AIDS that came from a woman who reports to me. Perhaps, I should have included the information that I’ve been HIV+ since 1994.

The term men who have sex with men (MSM) refers to all men who have sex with other men, regardless of how they identify themselves (gay, bisexual, or heterosexual). In the United States, HIV and AIDS have had a tremendous impact on MSM. Consider these facts:
AIDS has been diagnosed for more than half a million MSM. Over 300,000 MSM with AIDS have died since the beginning of the epidemic.
MSM made up more than two thirds (68%) of all men living with HIV in 2005, even though only about 5% to 7% of men in the United States reported having sex with other men.
In a 2005 study of 5 large US cities, 46% of African American MSM were HIV-positive.
Since HIV/AIDS in MSM was first diagnosed 1981, gay and bisexual men have been leaders in dealing with the challenges of the epidemic. Gay organizations and activists, through their work, have contributed greatly to many of the guidelines for prevention, treatment, and the care of people living with HIV/AIDS.
For complex reasons, HIV/AIDS continues to take a high toll on the MSM population. For example, the number of new HIV/AIDS cases among MSM in 2005 was 11% more than the number of cases in 2001. It is unclear whether this increase is due to more testing, which results in more diagnoses, or to an increase in the number of HIV infections. Whatever the reasons, in 2005, MSM still accounted for about 53% of all new HIV/AIDS cases and 71% of cases in male adults and adolescents.
