Hunter Gets A Rave: “A Triumph”

Hunter Parrish is getting raves for his break-out performance in Spring Awakening on Broadway. “In his Spring Awakening songs, Parrish reveals a singing voice so beautiful and emotionally expressive that, if he ever decided to give up acting (God forbid!), I’ll bet he could have a major career as a pop singer. Another big surprise of his accomplished, deeply moving performance is his speaking voice. Without for a moment sounding affected, Parrish delivers Melchior’s lines in resonant tones that indicate he’d be great in classical theater. (What a Romeo he would be! Hey, Mr. Producer…) In sum, his performance is a triumph.”

Who did he bang to get that review? He’s totally wooden acting-wise. Pretty, but wooden. And a pop singer?! B!tch, please…

If he really has *that* good a voice, he’d never make it as a “pop singer”, they don’t care about that these days.

I have only seen him on “Weeds” acting-wise, and the best I could say is he is adequate and has promise.

All that aside, he is definitely one of the prettiest twinks on TV these days!

I too am in love with Hunter, and its nice to meet an equally effusive fellow fan. Do you know of any recordings I could listen to? I might have to travel to NYC (I’m in SoCal)to see a performance, but after these reviews, I’ll get scalped on the ticket.

Keep up the insightful, topical reporting!

JJ, got to iTunes and search for Spring Awakening Live. iTunes had the cast of SA do a “mini-concert” at an Apple Store in New York. There are five tracks on the SA Live album. Parrish sings “Left Behind” solo.

I saw Spring Awakening with Hunter Parrish his first week in the show. He was great. Overall, the new cast is far stronger than the original cast, and Parrish gives a stirring performance as Melchior, and I thought his singing voice was good.

I enjoyed Spring Awakening the first time I saw it, and I found it daring the second time I saw it. This is the first time in many years I’ve seen a show recast with actors so different than their predecessors in the roles.

MEL,

I respectfully disagree! The original cast was amazing! The Wendella looks like she is 12 so it makes the story of “spring awakening” seem more like “premature spring awakening”. The original Moritz was AMAZING! Hunter as Melchior does a better than fair job, but he is nowhere close to being “far stronger”. The 2 characters that play the gay guys are better in the recasting…or maybe they are just cuter!

Shane,
I’m happy to agree to disagree because I loved the original cast and I loved the replacement cast. I did want to comment on the appearance of the cast age-wise. The kids in the original Wedekind text are supposed to be 13 or 14. That was the one place where I thought the producers played it safe when the show first opened. I think part of the “daring” of the new cast is that they are more age appropriate. I also really appreciated that physically and in portrayal, the new cast bears little resemblance to their predecessors in the roles.
