‘If corporations and people are the same under the law, then two corps in the same industry can’t merge. That’s gay marriage’

SOUNDBITES — “If corporations and people are the same under the law, then two corps in the same industry can’t merge. That’s gay marriage.” —A very astute Daniel Wilson, tweeting on how the Supreme Court’s recent campaign finance decision affects future business dealings

This will fly right over the heads of 99.9% of the people who will read it, excluding attorneys. Its my experience that most people (gay, straight and otherwise) tend misunderstand corporate entities at the most fundamental levels. This lack of understanding is at the root of alot of misplaced anger and despair on the part of many.

@ Keith

I think more and more people are understanding this scenario. That’s my impression. I’m young and I’ve known about this for years.

I’m not a fan of the recent Supreme Court ruling, but it’s a bit of a stretch to define a corporation’s “industry” as its “gender.” To begin with, there are an enormous number of industries (and thus corporate “genders”) in existence, while marriage as a merger combines parties of only 2 possible categories: male and female. (Male-male, male-female, female-female, etc.)

That’s just to start.

This sound bite is just silly.

I may not yet be a lawyer, but I’ve got enough legal training to know that this is stretched far enough to shred the argument.
