Introducing The Regulars Comic, a weekly comic from Karl Hampe we’ll be featuring on Queerty.
The Regulars Comic is a fun, snarky take on what might happen if a gay, urban attorney burn-out wound up running a coffee bar. It’s an irreverent weekly, web-based look at the silly, sexy, and enraging clash between gay pride and daily prejudice. Visit TheRegularsComic.com for more.
PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS
OK, I am sold, funny stuff! And kudos to Karl for pointing out something I am 100% in agreement with. Mike “the situation” definatley has adequate abs. Howeva, the only six pack he may possess is one in his cooler. As pointed out above there are dozens of guys in any gym who have better abs than him……….
Hilarious
Is there a reason he drew the black chick’s lips half the size of her whole head and filled them in “black” since red wasn’t available?
Sketchy.

_______
Um…it’s a black and white image. No red, and if he left her lips unfilled she would have looked like some white performer in the 1930’s doing black face.

shut the fuck up
Hilarious
@Cam: The gross exaggeration on her lips pretty much looks like black face regardless. I’m fairly certain you purposely missed the point since you didn’t even touch on why he drew her lips so incredibly large.
I think a line across the face like he did with the other two characters would’ve sufficed.
@chris: You’re rather articulate.
adam
@Hilarious: Lips are white in blackface.
That character could be based off of someone he knows in person, with her lips being a particularly notable feature. This is a comic… are you going to be criticizing cartoons for exaggerated features next?

If only Snooki had job prospects once Da Shore is ovah. If only she din’t get arrested. If only she had some skillz…
Even her own Pop is sorta mystified by how and why she is so popular despite a singular lack of talent. Quotes floatin’ round out there.
@ Karl: that was *good!*

Keep them coming! I like.

So CAM missed the point on purpose, but you were complaining about him not using red on her lips even though it was a black and white comic.
Hilarious
@WalkderDC: Actually that’s not what I said at all, read it again.
He chose to make her lips her skin color. A different black than that of the other two pairs of lips on the panel.
And again that still ignores the ridiculous size he chose to draw her lips, but keep clinging to the color argument as if it holds any water. I know it’s a black and white comic so why twist my words and go there? Oh that’s right because you can’t deny there’s something wrong with how he chose to draw that character.
I didn’t even touch the one with the mariachi hat on because I thought it was too obvious, but oddly enough that’s been ignored too.
Being gay doesn’t give you a pass to play up racial stereotypes. And it’s obvious that’s what this person is doing and only reinforces the argument that there are serious racial divides within the gay community. The defense of this obvious smack in the face only serves to make it worse.
That strip almost looks like something that came from Stormfront. Just because the dialogue that accompanied it wasn’t offensive doesn’t make the drawing itself any less suspect.
A gay comic that covers bigotry against gays: http://www.queerty.com/is-the-dadt-survey-a-chance-to-discharge-bigots-20100730/
shouldn’t be drawing black women with massive dark lips and hispanics with mariachi hats.
Ironically people have a fit about the supposed widespread homophobia in the black community. Then don’t ignore racism in the gay community.
It takes two.

@Hilarious:
Oh, he could have based the character on somebody he knows. Oh you are focusing on one thing to the exclusion of all others. The white guy has a pinhead, and the other guy is short. etc..
I just looked this site up, here is the description of that character..
“Stephanie
Professor of Social Work at NYU; lives in Brooklyn. Brings her own cup to reduce waste.
Drinks: Rooibos Red Tea
(met Karl at law school when she cross-registered from the School of Social Work)””

Oh yeah, their really mocking African American’s with that character aren’t they? (Eye roll) How DARE they write a black woman as a full professor at NYU?! Thats just RACIST! They should have just done what other comic strips do and have zero minorities in them I guess?
anonymouse
Black girl looks like my black friend Candice.
What’s wrong with making black comic book characters look like some people that have that resemblance?
Hilarious is just having one of those “EVERYTHING IS RACIST!!!” moments, I suppose.
I don’t complain when people draw lines for eyes on asian characters when there are those of us with eyes larger than the average white man.
It’s called characterization.
It’s like asking why Neytiri from Avatar looks like Zoe Saldana. Oh wait.. because it is her. Big lips and all.
Maybe you should go watch Captain Planet and ask why some of the characters have foreign accents. Or why the redheaded American character acts like the stereotypical dumb American that even Americans characterize american characters as. (You know, other than blowing everything up)
