  BANKING ON WOMEN

If You’re Insured, Your Vagina And Ovaries Are Too!

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has just recommended that all private medical insurance providers fully cover contraceptives, emergency contraceptives, well woman exams, STI testing, and other preventative medicine regarding female reproductive health. This means that all these things could be covered as early as next August. Preventing a pregnancy certainly costs less than managing an unwanted one and reproductive health is important to a woman’s overall well-being, so this is certainly welcome news!

For all you Americans interested in your healthcare debate: This shows the core reason for a publicly controlled system.

In Canada, you are covered as soon as you are born, and your mother was covered as she gave birth. Coverage is not unlimited, but is there equally for everyone.

In the case of STIs, *everyone* is “covered”. As public health policy, you can walk in and be tested. You don’t need a card or ID, you don’t even have to give your real name.

Such good news! They’ve also added domestic violence counseling as well (which currently isn’t well covered in many, many plans.) Kathleen Sibelius (spelling?) has reason to be proud.
