Intl. Imbalance.

Californian queers may be able to marry, but that doesn’t mean all the gay couples are feeling gay. Remember, the federal government doesn’t recognize same-sex nuptials, which means binational couples still face long-distance romances, emigration or simply calling it quits. [Reuters]

Obama supports extending federal benefits, including immigration rights, to gay couples in a committed relationship and recognized by the particular state.

Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has sponsored the Uniting American Families Act for a very long time. That bill would extend the same immigration rights to gay couples as provided to others.

It’s a shame Obama can’t just say he supports same-gender marriages because he is afraid it will cost him the anti-gay marriage vote. Instead we have to fumble around as we have been for years, state to state and hear dribs & drabs about ‘anything else but marriage’ that can be done to ‘extend basically the same rights’ here and there.

Obama either believes in his heart that gays deserve equality or he does not.

Even if Obama came out today and said he supported gay marriage, we would still have to “fumble around” from state to state because marriage is a state law issue. Obama has no power to change that and his support would be merely symbolic as he watched McCain’s inauguration ceremony.

So Try Wrong is in agreement with me that Obama does not have the integrity to come out and say that he would do what he could to ensure full equality for gays once he becomes president as he has made similar promises on so many other issues which he currently has no control over as a candidate.

Maybe we can cross out fingers and ‘hope’ that this is another one of the issues on which Obama will ‘change’ his mind once he gets elected.

>or simply calling it quits.

That simply is not an option my Philippine partner of five and one-half years now would even consider.

I will fight for the right to have my family by my side until my last breath. Nothing less will do.
