Iowa Supremes Begin Gay Marriage Case Tuesday

"The gay marriage debate moves to the Midwest this week as the Iowa Supreme Court hears arguments in a challenge to the state's ban on same-sex marriage. If the high court rules in favor of the half-dozen gay couples who sued, it would make Iowa the fourth state after Massachusetts, California and Connecticut to uphold the right of same-sex couples to legally marry….The plaintiffs in the gay marriage lawsuit include Dawn and Jen BarbouRoske of Iowa City, who have two daughters and said they want their relationship and their family to be fully recognized under the law." I woulda. It doesn't surprise me that Iowa, which is a surprisingly progressive state, as well as one that, even among its Republican base, has a more-or-less "live and let live" attitude toward life, would be in the forefront of the same-gender marriage movement. As Meredith Willson said in "The Music Man" all those many years ago, "There's nothing halfway about the Iowa way to treat you (if we treat you, which we may not do at all)." It's all or nothing with Iowans. And there's a good chance it'll be all!

Iowa is also a highly evangelical state, as evident in Huckabee's winning the caucus there. I don't think a pro-gay marriage verdict in this case would go over very well there.

Yeah, but you also have to consider that many more people attended the democratic caucus, and Barack Obama barely beat out Hilary Clinton. I think many Iowans, especially the younger generation, are either pro-gay marriage, or opposed to it morally, but can't think of any legal reason why it shouldn't be allowed. I just hope that same-sex marriage becomes legal, because many of my friends are being the rights that I have.
