Is Getting A Black Eye Painted On Your Face A Responsible Way To Raise Awareness About Gay Bashing?

If getting “NOH8” painted on your cheek is a way to show solidarity with gays wanting to get married, then having a professional make-up artist paint a black eye is, apparently, how you show solidarity with gay bashing victims.

The New York City weekly party Griffin Sundays, hosted by Brian Rafferty and Shawn Paul Mazur at the Meatpacking District’s Griffin nightspot, welcomed attendees to “The Gay Bash,” where a portion of guests’ receipts went to The Anti-Violence Project. That’s on top of the $5-$10 suggested donation guests will be asked to pay to get their eyes painted as if they were pummeled.

The event comes on the heels of the videotaped gay bashing of Damian Furtch (whose attacker claims he too is gay), who was given an actual black eye.

The letter Rafferty and Mazur distributed about the event:

Last week one of our dear friends, Damian Furtch, was beaten and attacked in the West Village for being gay.

Its 2011. Its NEW YORK CITY. Its time for this to STOP.

This week at Griffin Sundays we’re raising awareness and money for The Anti-Violence Project which is an organization dedicated to eliminating hate violence and assault in the gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, and hiv-infected community.

When one of us is attacked, we all are attacked….

We will have professional makeup artists painting on “black eyes” for a suggested donation of $5-$10. ALL funds will be donated directly to the Anti-Violence Project.
Also, Rafferty/Mazur Events will be donating a percent of the bar directly to the Anti-Violence Project.

NYC Pride is coming early this year – oddly enough in the form of a GAY BASH – be proud of who you are and come show your support for this amazing cause!
If you can’t make it to the event but would still like to make a donation please visit the AVP link below. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated, let’s help put an end to the violence:
