Hawaii Warriors football coach Greg McMackin — who eloquently described competitors Notre Dame as having performed a “little faggot dance” — found himself apologizing again at a press conference after meeting with his bosses over the incident. And, he’s being punished, so he really must be sorry!
McMackin, in the above tear-filled repeat apology, got slapped with a 30-day suspension without pay, a seven-percent salary cut, and he’ll be forced to create a PSA in cooperation with gay groups. On the bright side? Unlike Isaiah Washington, he didn’t repeat the word “faggot” during his speech. Uh, good job?
sal(the original)
yeah,i guess…….but i wonder is he sorry only cause he got caught or is he the kinda guy that using this word would inevitably eat his conscious up??
gregg
He’s learned his lesson, who needs another n-word in this country anyway.
Woof
This coming from the team that USED to be called the Rainbow Warriors. They dropped the Rainbow part from their name like 4 years ago…wonder why…hmmmm?
Julian Edward Domain
We should lobby the school to get the name restated to rainbow warriors. It’s a two fer for the school, Havvai natives will be pleased as well.
AngryFag
Okay, he ‘never intended to be offensive’…Uhmmm. Sorry, but with his repetition of the comment and the giggling of the sports staff…Who the freak is believing that poop?!?
He was sitting around with his buddies, using negative words and stereotypes to diss Notre Dame. Homos in the crossfire. His basic inherent belief is that ‘homos’ are less than, which is a recurring theme with heterofascists. He INTENDED it to be offensive! He just didn’ realize he’d either get caught, or the level of his offense.
Here’s the kicker: He started crying when he said he was going to work with the LGBT community on campus! Beautiful! He freakin choked on the term “LGBT”.
heh heh
They’re not going to change him.
He will always use terms like that. And if you say he can’t say ‘f*gg*t’, he’ll find some other term.
This is a bad man.
They should can his ass, but surely they won’t because it’s all just media fluff. I’m sure even UH would be happy if all those annoying homos who want crazy things like being treated equal would all just go away.
Don’t bend over.
They still hate us.
Andrew
He appears sincere. Sad, though, that he says at one point “I have offended the gay and lesbian community…” True, but it will be nice when we reach the point in the future when a heartfelt apology would recognize that his statements were offensive not just to GLBT folks but offensive in general. Maybe this is semantics, but many straight friends and family of mine were offended. As a white person, I find the use of the n-word or the k-word, etc., offensive. Oh well.
dellisonly
He slipped. He said a word that is inappropriate. He gave a sincere apology and is willingly giving up part of his salary to prove he is indeed sincere. What more do you want from a middle aged man who was raised in the age of hatred? Blood?
Andrew
@dellisonly:
Just to give some context to the money/salary element: Assuming he makes just $1M per year, that means he makes roughly $85000 per month and is “giving up” roughly $5800 of that per month. Like I said, he looks sincere in the video. Still can’t help but wonder if the tears/remorse is less about being offensive and more about almost f-ing up his career and losing his $85K per month. Maybe it’s both. Who knows.
Cam
To put it in perspective, Federal law discriminated against us. We are deemed less than, by the law, we can hardly be surprised that with the government telling them we are sub-human, that people will actually believe them and say stuff like this. Get rid of DADT and DOMA and you will see much less of this.
DM73
No. Fire him.
Rasa
This man did make a big mistake. On a national (actually in this day and age, probably also on an international, too) stage.
In his words and in his demeanor at this press conference, he does seem sincere and honestly remorseful for his words and actions.
He uses the phrase “teachable moment”.
It’s a good phrase.
Seems like we are getting a few “teachable moments” lately… (Thanks to good leadership in many areas for recognizing them as such.)
I don’t like “hate speech” and I certainly don’t like “hate actions”.
Like many of Queerty’s readers, I’ve been the victim of these things.
I also am trying to cultivate strength in many kinds of ways– including being able to forgive myself and others when it is appropriate.
This man is on his way to receiving my forgiveness– especially in light of the “next steps” that he is planning to take to support the LGBT Community.
As a culture, I think we are making progress…
We stumble and fall— but we do keep trying to move forward.
And things are getting better.
We’ve got quite a ways to go, but things are better than they were when i was a young man.
Cheers,
Rasa

Jimmy Swaggart is that you?

I don’t have a frickin’ clue whether his apology is sincere, but I’m thrilled he is forced to make one!
And I’m not excusing him by any means, but that word is tossed around so much it has probably lost a lot of its meaning – in other words, I don’t think it automatically means someone hates gay folk.
Although I also agree with previous posters who said if Federal law discriminates against us and we are sub-human, it is no wonder the general public doesn’t mind using these words. Agreed, get rid of DADT & DOMA and we’ll see much less of this sort of thing.
Whup-ass Master
Here is a man who sounds sincerely remorseful.
He’s remorseful for being raked over the coals and jeopardizing his own career. He’s sorry he’s been forced on television for two boilerplate apologies.
He’s learned his lesson. He’ll never call anyone a faggot, ever again. Not while the cameras are on, anyway.
dellisonly
@Andrew: I’m just trying to find the bright side of a decent human being making a mistake.
PWPUKA
Considering he’s paid by the state (and the highest-paid, at that), he would have had to take a 7% pay cut anyway. So, with the suspension without pay, he’s gotten off with essentially no real punishment. And the tears? Puh-lease…
youcanthandlethetruth
If this football coach was a self-identified homosexual who used words like “christer” or “breeder” should he be forced to apologise or resign?
Or should homosexuals still retain a monopoly on being offended?
Whup-ass Master
@youcanthandlethetruth: I think religious whack jobs like you will always find plenty to be offended by (it’s like heroin to you), so relax goober.
Oh and the day an openly gay man is hired to coach a major sports team, we’ll get back to your impotent “christer” argument.
youcanthandlethetruth
@Whup-ass Master: That was a rather clumsy dodge W-UM.
But thanks for confirming that homosexuals still want to exercise their monopoly on being offended.
So much for your desperate cries for “equality” and “tolerance”!
The Milkman
I believe that he understands his blunder and is remorseful, and I accept his apology. I’m also giving him props for really apologizing, instead of a “sorry you’re offended” non-apology.
I also think that his community service will be the real benefit here. McMackin has a chance to be a huge leader among his colleagues, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing him try to use this squalid incident to help advance the cause of honesty and equality within college athletics.
And yes, if McMackin were gay and used terms like “breeder” in a press conference, he should be forced to apologize. Better yet, he should man up and apologize on his own and not have to be forced at all. Funny how those who ask questions like that are already resolved to hate us. Can’t handle the truth, indeed. The truth is the very thing that is beginning to set us free.
youcanthandlethetruth
@The Milkman: The truth is most Americans consider homosexuality to be immoral and abnormal, and they don’t want marriage to be redefined to accommodate homosexuals.
You are a long way from closing the sale.
An Other Greek
The LGBT community knows too well the systemic, societal prejudices that are enforced upon us, all of us.
Straight, gay, bi, we all grow up in a society that has embraced and spread homophobia.
This man slipped. Maybe he is a hater, MAYBE HE IS NOT???
Maybe he is just a product of his generation and of his homophobic society… and not really a hater, just a follower? Or maybe he is a hater that got busted…?
I do not know. His crying did touch me, maybe I’m a sucker… Either way, I am ready to forgive, especially since I have seen so many others, including LGBT’s “slip” so often into internalized homophobia, racism, classism, etc…
——————————————————
Whup-ass Master
@youcanthandlethetruth: Okay, fine. Change the subject, you charmer. Let’s make this about gay marriage now. Fact is, the tide is turning. Opinion polls reflect a sea change in attitudes about it and young voters (even “breeding christers”) support it. It’s coming, goober. And all the teeth-gnashing and bible thumping in the world won’t stop it.
Funny how a lot of the folks who are rabidly against it seem to spend their time assuming wide stances in mens room stalls…oh, and skulking about on gay sites. Like you.
The Milkman
Yawn. My equal rights do not have the acceptance of “most Americans” as their prerequisite. Non-sequitur.
But you’re right in that “closing the sale” will require much more work on our part.
This will end my back and forth with you, as I make it a point not to converse with bigots for more than a couple messages. Have a nice evening.
youcanthandlethetruth
@The Milkman: Thanks for your tolerance and yearning for equality Mr Milkman.
I’m touched by your condescension.
youcanthandlethetruth
@Whup-ass Master: Opinion polls are all over the map, and in the end they mean nothing.
Votes in official ballots are what matter and Americans have voted against homosexual marriage every single chance they have had.
That’s why 30 states including CA have amended their constitutions to protect marriage from violation by homosexuals. Four more states will join them in November. 12 other states use the DOMA to protect marriage.
Americans are serious about protecting marriage and sending a message to homosexuals.
You can live a homosexual lifestyle if you choose, but don’t expect us to sacrifice our beliefs just to appease yours.

That is the faggiest thing I’ve ever heard…I think “you’re catching the gay” (as if you don’t already have it). Too funny!
I’m touched by your closeted self-hatred and mental projection.
youcanthandlethetruth
@Dennis: Now you’ve said “faggiest” in a public forum you must immediately make a grovelling, tear-filled apology and serve 100 hours of community service
Dennis
@youcanthandlethetruth:
Oh, girlfriend, you just keep getting gayer and gayer and gayer!!! You are nearing faaaabulous!!! Sorry, but you just opened your closet door, and your purse collection fell out.
I’ll try to have some compassion for you, being as you are, a tortured religion-blinded closeted gay, but you sure make it difficult…you little cunty bitch. (that’s called a “bitch-slap, you’ll learn all about it when your instructional manual arrives.)
Seriuosly, find a gay-supportive therapist and/or a coming out group, and stop projecting all your inner mental garbage on the poor queerty queers.

It’s too late, dennis. He’s already spoiled the earth with his progeny, according to him. He’s soiled the human race with his offering, i.e., he’s got keeids.

No one on this site has any right to be mad at that man for saying anything if you are not speaking out against LGBT people calling others names. LGBT top the charts at creativity in slurring others.

@SM: After years of being called every name it the book people begin to fight back. The fact is gays are still called a series of defamatory names and it is considered acceptable, so how dare you? When was the last time you were referred to as a pedophile in a DOMA brief?
SM
@InExile:
Cool. FIRE every LGBT that slurs others. You either stop it for EVERYONE or stop complaining.
You don’t get a pass.
Try entering the adult world.

You bitched ALL DAY SUNDAY ONLINE….you could have been out walking door to door canvassing for Equality like others are doing. You are a complete phoney, bullshit, drunk, that is full of rage.
TANK
@SM:
Those “good things” didn’t come from religion anymore than people pick and choose which biblical verses to believe come from the bible. There’s a higher standard people are appealing to in making those decisions, douche. It’s called ethics, and it has nothing to do with religion.

All my straight friends new you were going to lose last summer based on your TV ads alone and no one in your community CARED! Screw the straight people who might see you all are headed to DISASTER. The most politically incorrect community for fun cries foul at everyone else. OK!
My rights are not on the line. lets see what YOU do. I’m betting it wont be out talking to people.

SM
@InExile:
Oh….you might be a better example to “breeders” about not using LGBT slurs if you are not hanging out on a blog called “QUEERty”
Whup-ass Master
@youcanthandlethetruth: The “different views” you speak of deny not only the rights but the very existence of homos.
We do not deny your right to be a closed minded yahoo, to spew your hateful rhetoric, to cherry pick choice passages from the bible and believe in an unlikely God-Fairy in the sky that has promised you paradise as reward for being hateful.
Not once has any rapture-righter provided any useful, tangible evidence as to how legalized gay marriage would infringe on your rights. Instead, you resort to fear-baiting, bible-thumping and boilerplate rhetoric. You are tired and stale.
NEXT!!

The gay community needs to be able to accept sincere apologies. This off-with-your-head mentality makes us all look inflexible and hypersensitive.

But you did, Blanche. You did.
Now, make a list of the names we of the LGBT community have been called by just about everybody under the sun, including those you provided us with in your list.
Glass. Stone. House.
When you bigots and homophobes lay down your arms, we will be all too happy to lay down ours.
So far, I don’t see any olive branches being extended.

@David in Houston: thank you

@schlukitz:
The fact you call me a “homophobe” and every other name constantly only proves how whacked out and over emotional you are. I usually spend my CHRISTistmas Eves in the Castro Theatre watching the SFGMC perform and you call me a homophobe?
Sounds like a rational person to me.
hyhybt
I’m fine with the apology… but in 2009 which is really worse: saying something like that deliberately to offend, or saying the same thing not even realizing that it’s offensive?
TikiHead
@SM: “I usually spend my CHRISTistmas Eves in the Castro Theatre watching the SFGMC perform and you call me a homophobe?”
On behalf of the Gay Agenda®, please vacate our theater, and never besmirch our seats with your ass again. Thanks.

I think the man is sincere. Just sorry this happened to begin with.
And @Tank: hilarious
youcanthandlethetruth
@schlukitz: Homosexuals already have equality and in many legal situations they get special treatment as a “protected class’.
The plain truth is that a homosexual couple is NOT equal to a heterosexual couple when it comes to an ability to procreate.
You may want to delude yourselves otherwise but most normal people are not prepared to facilitate your delusion.
Vancouverite
@youcanthandlethetruth: You certainly do seem to spend a lot of time at this site for a supposed heterosexual. Your lame argument style and complete lack of logic don’t really seem to be convincing anyone; in fact, you seem to invite invective with a lot of your word choices. I’m forced to conclude that you’re a masochist who gets off on being insulted by other men – that that’s how you get your rocks off.
That in mind, I’d like to wish you a pleasant afternoon and a good evening. Enjoy today’s photo features too, btw.
youcanthandlethetruth
@Vancouverite: You should be grateful I take the time to give you sad homosexuals a different point of view from the real world.
Jaroslaw
Thank you so much, YCHTT for taking the time for trying to enlighten us.
However, as a person who supposes he is very intelligent, you would know that no matter how much intelligence a person has, one can still be wrong and NO one, not even Einstein said he knew so much that there was nothing left to learn. I admit to not having researched this, but it would shocking indeed to find a genius who never changed his mind.
None of your posts here indicate even the slightest understanding of opposing points of view, which does indicate agreement, but would in fact indicate critical, logical thinking which you are incapable of.
So you must NOT be the intelligent being that you suppose.
Jaroslaw
sorry, understanding opposing points of view DOES NOT indicate one agreement………
youcanthandlethetruth
@Jaroslaw: I don’t expect you to agree with me but at least you should be exposed to an alternative point of view.
After all the homosexuals are always demanding tolerance so shouldn’t they be prepared to show it?
Jaroslaw
#69 Thank you for continuing to show your stupidity. You keep repeating the same things. I don’t:
We Gay people don’t need an alternate point of view: We were raised by straight people to think we were straight. (the vast majority of us anyway).
schlukitz
@SM:
I usually spend my CHRISTistmas Eves in the Castro Theatre watching the SFGMC perform
