“There is a perception that high HIV rates in Black communities are due to pervasive homophobia,” Charles Stephens writes in a new op-ed published by RHRealityCheck. “This notion is overly simplistic and does not advance discussions around building bridges among heterosexual and LGBT Black communities.”
Stephens then points his finger at Lee Daniels, the openly gay executive producer of the hit TV show Empire. He recalls a speech Daniels gave earlier this year when he said that, while doing background research for his 2009 film Precious, he was surprised to learn that black women make up the majority of new HIV infections reported in the U.S. each year among women.
“From this observation, [Daniels] arrived at the conclusion that ‘down low’ Black gay and bisexual men (men who have sex with men in secret) are killing Black women,” Stephens writes.
“According to Daniels,” he continues, “Black gay and bisexual men can’t come out about their sexuality because of the extreme level of homophobia in Black communities, so they must engage in secret sex with other men, wherein they get HIV that they later pass on to their female partners.”
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
In taking this stance, Stephens believes, Daniels is actually contributing to the problem by perpetuating a myth that black men are “hypersexual criminals” who are “complicit in the spread of HIV.”
“These views–associating Black men’s sexuality with criminality, murder, and death–carry dangerous policy implications,” Stephens writes.
He goes on to aruge that negative stereotypes about certain groups of people can lead to cultural stigmas which ultimately impact laws, using HIV criminalization laws as just one example.
“Daniels, in his assessment of ‘down low’ men ‘killing African-American women’ is legitimatizing HIV criminalization laws that perpetuate systemic homophobia and racism as well as dangerous stereotypes against HIV-positive people,” Stephens writes. “These laws are not rooted in science, but rather in stigma.”

Can we teach antigay religious zealots not to hate gay? Can you teach the African american

Of course with education and time, the situation should al solve itself, as long as the american culture

As I see it, there are several contributing factors to homophobia in ANY community. Religious bigotry and idiotic, rigid ideas about masculinity, femininity and gender. LGBT challenges all, head on.

Why don’t this guy just shut the hell up and let a very prominent black man do work in his own community. I think that its very obvious that he is right. VERY OBVIOUS. Even black queens a lot of times have wives and girlfriends and call themselves straight. OBVIOUSLY IF YOU HAD THE ANSWERS FOR THE BLACK GAY COMMUNITY THEY WOULD ASK YOU. WHY IS IT THAT WHITE PEOPLE ALWAYS THINK THEY KNOW MORE ABOUT THE BLACK COMMUNITY THAN THEY DO. ESPECIALLY THE BLACK GAY COMMUNITY. BLACK PEOPLE ARE WAY MORE HOMOPHOBIC THAN WHITE PEOPLE. JUST CHILL AND QUIT ACTING LIKE SINCE WE ARE BOTH MINORITIES WE SIT, HOLD HANDS, AND SING AROUND THE CAMPFIRE. WE DO NOT. MOST OF THE BLACK COMMUNITIES HERE WOULDN’T PISS ON A QUEER IF THEY WERE ON FIRE. LET LEE DANIELS DO THE DAMN THING.

How is he perpetuating it?! He did research for a movie that was set in 1987 when Hiv/aids epidemic was at a high point, Precious. Lee Daniels is also only referring to black gay men on the D.L not out black gay men. Annnnnd on top of that if you’ve watched the show Empire none of the gay characters are on the Down Low!! Jamal the middle son is a very proud, strong and out gay character who stands up to almost any challenge about his sexuality. Why is this considered a step back???? Charles Stephen get the F&*% over yourself.

It’s his experience. He started a meaningful conversation within the black community and within the larger society. Let’s debate and discuss instead of whispering behind the walls. I do not recall many notable African Americans discussing the issue of homophobia until recently. There were lot of insinuation since the Prop8 nothing openly discuss until a very popular show like Empire that deal with gay issue within the black culture. Does it encompass the whole issue surrounding the gays within the African American community? No. But it opens up the community to face the issue of homophobia. It’s not an exclusive challenge for the African American community, it’s every culture. But African American culture is a very large part of America society, it’s a significant for the progression of gay rights.
lykeitiz
Being able to have a conversation about homophobia in the black community should not result in calling black men “hypersexual criminals”. Lee Daniels did not say that.
jwtraveler
I’m a white man and I will not pretend to be an expert on this. I do know that homophobia is not a yes or no phenomenon. It can manifest itself in many different ways in various cultures, communities, families and individuals.
A personal anecdote: A few years ago I was working on getting a national gay rights bill passed (not very successfully I’ll admit). I was distributing flyers in midtown Manhattan at the evening rush hour encouraging people to call their congressmembers to tell them to support the bill. Most of the passersby were white-collar workers. As I offered the flyer, I’d say something like “Support gay rights”. Some people took it, some didn’t. But I observed that black people were much more likely to take it than were whites. This is not scientific research, just a personal experience.

Please read before commenting. This man is a gay black male with insight to problems within the black community and understanding of the nuances. Instead you blame him for “perpetuating myths” because he puts bisexuals in a bad light :/. In the end black women suffer and continue to contract HIV. If there is justice in the world those who put maintaining dishonest and dangerous narratives above truth will pay a price.

It’s easy to vilify and point a finger at Lee Daniels, because he’s so prominent at the moment. I say the only thing that Lee is guilty of, is not doing his own research, becoming a free independent thinker, thus thinking for himself, as opposed to quoting, and believing so-called statistics, which often are rooted in cultural bias and r@cism.
First off I would really question the notion if there is a high rate, or rather if the so-called Black community actually has the highest rate of HIV or even AIDS. Reason being is that when HIV/AIDS became known and identified among small groups of gay White men in the early 80’s, in New York, San Fransisco and
Los Angeles, it was 99% gay White men. I take no joy in that, just stating what was. With the rise of the internet since then, and people expressing their preference, even here at Queerty, dating and sleeping patterns were discussed: Conclusion, the majority of gay White men are dating and sleeping with other White men. The majority of White people in America, are having sex with other White people. Regardless if the are gay ,bisexual or lesbian or straight.
And recent studies released by the CDC, posted here on Queerty, stated that Black gay/Bi men are less sexual, with fewer sexual partners, and less users of drugs. So if HIV/AIDS is sexually transmitted, and if most sexually active people are having sex within their own ethnic groups, just how did Blacks come out on top?? Easy: You have a man made disease so man made stats are used. Focus your surveys, polls and stats on the group you want to have the highest numbers, by going to lower socio-economical areas, and government funded clinics and hospitals. And since so much of society has been condition to believe the worst of Black pathology, it’s was/is an easy sell…
The so-called down-low is nothing more than closeted bi-sexual behavior. And out of a country that’s over 70% White, you definitely will have more closeted bi-sexual’s than Blacks. Ted Haggard:Paul Crouch: Jim McGreevey:Merve Griffin: Joe Simpson: Marlon Brando are just a few of Many White who do this. But it’s only called down-low based on what color you are…
And just a side note: I would like for anyone to prove that the Black community is more Homophobic than other communities. Can anyone prove that the majority of LGBTQ people bashed, murdered, denied jobs, housing, rent, denied a promotion, passed bills/legislation denying LGBTQ people full benefits and rights as citizens?? People are thinking in the abstract, But I’ll be waiting…
Gerald Panuthos
ummm no. That would be the black community responsible for that mess!

Someone that admits high rates of infection within a community is unacceptable and comes with solutions would be more helpful. Pointing fingers alone just delays fixing what is wrong.
Blackceo
@Tackle:
Good points. However, in relation to percentage of the population, HIV rates in the Black community are of epidemic proportions. It’s pretty bad. Whether its DL or drug sharing or whatever, we need to figure out a better way of lessening the stigma and reducing the numbers of infected. This is just yet another health disparity that affects the Black community in higher % numbers and we gotta find solutions. It will take a combination increased grass roots efforts, policy changes, and local, state, and federal intervention to really get a hold of this problem. I’ve read studies that actually show Black men are actually having less riskier sex than White men, yet the numbers continue to disproportionately affect the Black community. Over half the CDC budget is targeted for African Americans, but poverty, stigma anddiscrimination, lack of healthcare access, and prison numbers are barriers that really contribute to the numbers.

Ummmm. No. Just no. This whole black men not he DL is something that has been perpetuated for far too long. Let me tell you something. When I was in the military there were tons of men “on the DL” that were married and secretly have sex with men, and guess what most of them were white. The black community doesn’t have a corner on the market of closeted married men looking for sex. As for the high rates of HIV infection that can be explained because of two factors. First, black gay men are more likely to have sex with other black gay men. There are 44,000,000 black people in this country. Half of those are men and only a poriton of those are adult age. With less then 10% of that number being gay, that leaves a million or less black gay men to chose from as sexual partners. What that means is a greater chance that someone will have slept with someone else who has HIV. Second, higher rates of poverty in black black community results in reduced access to healthcare. This means that people are less likely to get tested for HIV. Additionally, after receiving a diagnosis they are less likely to be able to afford ARV and achieve adequate viral suppression, which we all know greatly reduces chances infection. That’s it in a nutshell.
DistingueTraces
What Daniels said was silly.
IV drug use (or sex with a straight male IV drug user) is a far more likely means of transmission to a straight woman than the small number of secretly bi boyfriends.
Black homophobia DOES cut young gay black men off from the social systems that could otherwise support choices to protect their health.
As does white gay racism.
Milk
@Blackceo: Agreed 100% on your last sentence. Racism is the major contributing factor to the disproportionate numbers of black people facing health crisis in America. The shooting of innocent black men by the police force are not random act. The high incarceration rate of black men is not random. Until society stop marginalizing black Americans, the so call democracy in US is a sham. Being gay and black is a double whammy. Being woman, black and gay is triple whammy. The politic of divide is at play here. Using religion to perpetuate moral indignation on sexual orientation and overlooking the race divide. Ignoring poverty and educational crisis among the African Americans communities. Fuel by unscrupulous CIA in cahoots with drug cartels from Central and South America to fund their illegal war in that region by peddling drugs to the African American communities during the Reagan era. There is little political will within and without the black communities to change that. Every man for himself. Those who reach the financial status continue their greed and turn a blind eye to their own community. They enable the power that be to continue impoverish the black community. Me think Lee Daniel and others should start talking more. Rock the foundation and see what comes crawling under it. We cannot pretend that a crisis just appear out of no where.
dave lopes
It is a VIRUS.
The only people responsible for getting infected today are those who got infected. (Outside of rape).
Society as a whole created the environment for gay men, then society as a whole will and should feel the hit of HIV.
The whole idea of gay black men killing black women is nonsense.

While I enjoy Mr. Lee Daniels’ creative works, I never agreed with his assertions that hyper sexualized Black Men were responsible for the HIV rates among Black women. It was a reckless claim back then, and it remains a dangerous claim now. Black Women are responsible for their own poor choices. More babies born out of wedlock than any other group. Multiple fathers for multiple children.
While I tend to agree with the author of this op-ed, I question his timing in bringing up this shtt now? Lee Daniels made those claims several years ago, so Mr. Stephens needs to go sit his azz down somewhere.

Nobody accused Ntozake Shange of perpetuating the stereotype when writing For Colored Girls or Janet Jackson for portraying the character or Tyler Perry for producing the film.
There is a reason many black woman and gay black men identified with those characters and why they keep popping up in media written staring and directed and produced by black people. The latin community is also very much afflicted by this issue.

I think homophobia is the main culprit for so many down low men and people making bad choices. Unprotected sex is the main reason. More men and women need to wrap it up to combat this horrible, horrible disease. Society as a whole need to embrace people, that includes black people are gay. I don’t have any story to relate as far as being down low, but I could have been. I made the choice to not date women because I knew I would cheat on them with men. I wish others would be considered of other people’s feelings. I know guys who are DL and I encourage them to be honest with their wives and girlfriends. Honesty and acceptance is key in figthing this HIV within the gay community.
Curty
Nevermind The hiv rate among black women. So many of my gay black friends have hiv. Many of them have been lied too. My asian friend has hiv too. So as a community more outreach is still needed and more people need to get tested and be honest when they have it. Years ago I was about to hook up with a guy and he told me he had hiv. So wish everyone was that honest and get tested.
jason smeds
Lee Daniels is ridiculous. He appears to be anti-male. He seems to be operating on this assumption that only men spread HIV to women and not the other way around. Well, I’ve got news for Lee: women can transmit HIV to men too.
Amongst liberal men, you often find this anti-male streak where it’s always the man who is responsible and never the woman.
Bauhaus
@jason smeds:
According to amfAR: Women are at least twice more likely to acquire HIV from men during sexual intercourse than vice versa. That’s globally.

I’ve never seen Empire; but, what I have recently seen are open discussions concerning race and homosexuality. I’d hazard a guess that Lee Daniels advanced said discussions.

Bauhaus, you are correct on your figures. HIV is perpetuated by men in the world. This is why lesbian women are the least likely to be infected and have lower infection rates than heterosexual men or heterosexual women.
Curty
@Bauhaus: You took my words out of context and distorted them. I changed the topic back to hiv among gay men and ways to combat it. I see you ignored my first post when I discussed women with hiv and men who give it to them. How clever of you to take one line from two post to try to make it seem im unsympathetic to women with hiv. I know a friend of mine who was given hiv by an ex boyfriend. It is very hurtful. Im not crazy nor nasty. Perhaps you should ask yourself.

After reading many of these comments, I’ve reached a conclusion. Everybody wants to throw blame around, but nobody knows anything.

@Curty:
I quoted you, verbatim. I didn’t distort anything. I simply asked a question about a something you wrote.
Did you mean to say, irrespective of, instead of never mind?
Curty
@Bauhaus: No harp on one little part of a sentence out of two post and failed. It was one of those tactics media does getting a sound bite and a quote without given the whole quote. All I simply did was talk more about men with hiv after my previous comment on possible causes of hiv in general. Did I made a comment about a friend of mine who is a woman who was given hiv by an ex boyfriend and how much I feel sorry for her. Of course you ignore that because it doesn’t fit your quote that I’m this anti woman gay man. Luckily im savvy enough to see what you tried to do and called you out on it.

I know black gay men who are out, and completely out and have been for decades, and I know some who are out but only to certain people and not everyone, and a black friend of mine told me how when he was younger he did date a black man who was “down low” and that just means the person is deeply closeted he said how the DL guy was not even married but how he set up all these odd rules like my friend couldn’t park his car near his house, they couldn’t talk about certain things in public despite how they were dating, and my friend broke it all off quickly since it was too much drama and BS to put up with.@jason smeds: Yes a lot of men do get infected from HIV+ women.

The “Down Low” is simply the black version of traditional Mediterranean straight (or bi)/gay sexual interactions. It is not how post-gay lib people understand themselves, and its roots go back to Plato.
You’re not gay if

(2) you don’t bottom
This view of sexual orientation and gender roles results in higher rates of transgenderism.

Women can transmit HIV to men. It’s a fluid-fluid thing, not a man-to-woman thing. This idea that it’s all the man’s fault was propagated by feminists and the self-loathing wing of gay male activism.
Feminists wish to assert the superiority of women – including lesbians and bisexual women – over all men – including gay and bisexual men. The self-loathing wing of gay male activism seeks to agree with feminists in order to justify its self-loathing.
Bauhaus
@jason smeds:
You said: “The self-loathing wing of gay male activism seeks to agree with feminists in order to justify its self-loathing.”
No, dearie! The self-loathing wing of gay male activism is called: Log Cabin Republicans. They’re a joke and a colossal failure. They vote for bigots and malcontents in order to justify their own self-loathing, and as a punishment for something they hate about themselves (being gay).
Mikah
It’s been statistically proven that Gay/Bisexual men wrap up a lot more than heterosexual men, because of the HIV scare among Gay men. This is also true for black Gay/Bi men, especially them.Obviously wrapping up more, means less spreading of STDs,but HIV is still raging on among black women.maybe they should talk to the straight men that are sticking their dicks in every pussy they smell, and using no protection, because of the use of birth control and the ignorance of HIV in the black community that is far too prevalent.Ignorance is bliss,Black Gay men will continue to be stigmatized and blamed as if HIV in the black community is their fucking fault, and it’s NOT.Everyone has the responsibility to take care of themselves, and that includes Women! If you open your legs to a man with no protection, that is your decision, and as a Black,Gay HIV negative man I will not be blamed for your mistakes. The only way to begin recovery is less stigmatization and more education.
Xzamilio
@Mikah: Not to be that guy, but in order to play devil’s advocate here I have to be: If it’s statistically proven, then surely you can provide statistics to back that up, right? So where are they?

FYI … There are “Black” People who don’t know anything about Black Culture. I would also volunteer that “Black Culture” in major urban east coast areas (like New York and Philadelphia) is a very different thing than Black Culture in the South.
I don’t know how White People decided that Lee Daniels was qualified to pronounce on definitive Black Culture but, I personally have seen nothing from Lee Daniels that has been of the slightest fucking interest to me whatsoever.
Everything I’ve personally seen and read about Empire has been crap. Fifty Cent’s Power TV Show has been much more interesting.

If i’m not mistaken the Dad in Precious was a drug addict, it had nothing to do with Gay men or sex at all. Dowlow, is just a synonym for closeted, it’s not exclusive to black people. Just from population along, there will always be more closeted gay white men then there will be closeted gay black men, or bisexuals. The really weird and misconstrued information is in the statistics themselves and not in the actual numbers. The misconception is that there are more black men with HIV then white from the statistics but the Numbers are not the same. And in the case of newly exposed to HIV, this number sadly can’t be accurate. There are people who know they are positive will not get treated for it, and there are people who don’t know they have it and haven’t been tested for it. It’s a sad reality that spurred the “Get tested campaign” that had abunch of black faces on it because why? Black people weren’t nearly tested as much as there white counter parts, sadly also the reality due to institutional racism minorities have less access to health care and education, which is vitally important and has been shown to be true. So when the campaign actually worked, new treatments were developed to counter HIV, low and behold more people from the minority community now seek help and treatment. This includes people who contract HIV from drug you.
I take no stock in statistic, give me hard cold numbers. I have known both black and white men who have hidden their status and infested others, and some who are open about it and safe. I agree that it takes a level of personal responsibility to be safe these days, and with the Porn industry going Prep crazy and promoting people being real bareback sluts, that’s going to only get harder with people thinking they don’t need protection. (Before anyone jumps on me about Prep use, I have read the initial study and the UK study, so don’t come at me with BS about what Prep is and isn’t, and what people do and don’t do with it, the reality is people think they don’t need protection and it has become the very thing that it was said to become, which is a party drug)Education is key in prevention. Most people can’t afford Prep, so that’s not an option for lower income people, and a lot of minorities.

@jwtraveler: Truth! To paraphrase The West Wing, “you can’t have simple solutions to complex problems.”
I can’t speak to the situation in the Black community but I do see people trying to find a villain in the white community for the new HIV cases “young folks aren’t scared,” “Truvada,” “Porn,” “meth,” “sex education,” etc etc. It’s a complicated mess and deserves thoughtful consideration.

@Blackceo: Thanks! But with all due respects,HIV rates are not in epidemic proportions in the Black community. The stats are skewed to make it seem that way.The problem with this is we don’t question anything, or do any type of research into how stats are done. They can be easily manipulated, and unfortunately, we take manipulated numbers and run with them…
And yes, I read the same studies that Black “gay” men are having less riskier sex than White men. And also, have fewer sex partners, and less likely to engage in drug use. Conclude this with when AIDS was first identified, it was 99% with gay White men. As I stated above,Most gay/bi White men are having sex with other gay/bi White men. Most bi White men are having sex with White women. And the LGBTQ community outnumbers the Black LGBTQ people by something like 7-1: and we are talking about something that is “sexually” transmitted. With the above, how can there be an actual HIV/AIDS epidemic within the Black community??
It’s a shame the so many posters believe this and have gone ahead and vilified the Black women, when she’s not doing anything White women or others are not doing.More Black Women are sampled and studied more than White women: and many of the places, lower social-economic and Government funded clinics and hospitals is where the majority of people tend to be Black,is where they acquire the majority of the stats. Stats that too many take and repeat as fact…
Blackceo
@Tackle:
But given our % of the population I think in some areas it is of epidemic proportions. I live in Bethesda, MD which is very close to DC and the numbers of Black men with HIV in DC is of epidemic proportions. Perhaps I should’ve been clearer in terms of geography. In pockets with high Black gay male populations, the numbers are ridiculous.
jockjack5
For Queerty commenters… the following is a post @ breitbart that I found intriguing and thought-provoking. It doesn’t have to do with black-men on the “down-low” per se, but I have noticed that race seems to be a hot topic within the commenter-community, so I thought I would post this for your troubled reading pleasure.
“For almost 150 years the United States has been conducting an interesting experiment. The subjects of the experiment: black people and working-class whites.
The hypothesis to be tested: Can a people taken from the jungles of Africa and forced into slavery be fully integrated as citizens in a majority white population?
The whites were descendants of Europeans who had created a majestic civilization. The former slaves had been tribal peoples with no written language and virtually no intellectual achievements. Acting on a policy that was not fair to either group, the government released newly freed black people into a white society that saw them as inferiors. America has struggled with racial discord ever since.
Decade after decade the problems persisted but the experimenters never gave up. They insisted that if they could find the right formula the experiment would work, and concocted program after program to get the result they wanted. They created the Freedman’s Bureau, passed civil rights laws, tried to build the Great Society, declared War on Poverty, ordered race preferences, built housing projects, and tried midnight basketball.
Their new laws intruded into people’s lives in ways that would have been otherwise unthinkable. They called in National Guard troops to enforce school integration. They outlawed freedom of association. Over the protests of parents, they put white children on buses and sent them to black schools and vice versa. They tried with money, special programs, relaxed standards, and endless handwringing to close the “achievement gap.” To keep white backlash in check they began punishing public and even private statements on race. They hung up Orwellian public banners that commanded whites to “Celebrate Diversity!” and “Say No to Racism.” Nothing was off limits if it might salvage the experiment.
Some thought that what W.E.B. Du Bois called the Talented Tenth would lead the way for black people. A group of elite, educated blacks would knock down doors of opportunity and show the world what blacks were capable of. There is a Talented Tenth. They are the black Americans who have become entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors and scientists. But ten percent is not enough. For the experiment to work, the ten percent has to be followed by a critical mass of people who can hold middle-class jobs and promote social stability. That is what is missing.
Through the years, too many black people continue to show an inability to function and prosper in a culture unsuited to them. Detroit is bankrupt, the south side of Chicago is a war zone, and the vast majority of black cities all over America are beset by degeneracy and violence. And blacks never take responsibility for their failures. Instead, they lash out in anger and resentment.
Across the generations and across the country, as we have seen in Detroit, Watts, Newark, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and now Ferguson, rioting and looting are just one racial incident away. The white elite would tell us that this doesn’t mean the experiment has failed. We just have to try harder. We need more money, more time, more understanding, more programs, and more opportunities.
But nothing changes no matter how much money is spent, no matter how many laws are passed, no matter how many black geniuses are portrayed on TV, and no matter who is president. Some argue it’s a problem of “culture,” as if culture creates people’s behavior instead of the other way around. Others blame “white privilege.”
But since 1965, when the elites opened America’s doors to the Third World, immigrants from Asia and India–people who are not white, not rich, and not “connected”–have quietly succeeded. While the children of these people are winning spelling bees and getting top scores on the SAT, black “youths” are committing half the country’s violent crime–crime, which includes viciously punching random white people on the street for the thrill of it that has nothing to do with poverty.
The experiment has failed. Not because of culture, or white privilege, or racism. The fundamental problem is that white people and black people are different. They differ intellectually and temperamentally. These differences result in permanent social incompatibility.
Our rulers don’t seem to understand just how tired their white subjects are with this experiment. They don’t understand that white people aren’t out to get black people; they are just exhausted with them. They are exhausted by the social pathologies, the violence, the endless complaints, and the blind racial solidarity, the bottomless pit of grievances, the excuses, and the reflexive animosity.
The elites explain everything with “racism,” and refuse to believe that white frustration could soon reach the boiling point.”

A long time ago in the 70’s, a straight black friend called me up and asked me over for drinks. I had a backache and told him I didn’t think I could make it. He insisted and picked me up in his car. After we had a drink or two he told me he would massage my back and I would feel much better. He told me to lie face down on the carpet and he straddled me and proceeded to rub my back. After a few minutes, to my surprise, he reached under me, undid my belt and pulled down my zipper. He then proceeded to turn me over and gave me the best blowjob I ever had, before or since. You could tell he was experienced. I was in shock but I sure wasn’t going to tell him to stop. By the way, he knew I was gay. When it was over, he acted like it never happened at all. We never spoke about it again and he went right back to his girlfriend. That’s MY experience with a black on the DL.

WELL TRUTH HURTS HOMOPHOBIA IS VERY REAL IN THE BLACK/LATINO COMMUNITIES AND ITS SAD!! CAUSE I KNOW A LOT OF DOWN LOW GUYS. A LOT!!!!!!!!! AND MFS DON’T LIKE TO WRAP IT UP!! TERRIBLE JUST TERRIBLE
NoTransLogic
So many negative comments about the down low phenomenon, but how many of you have lives through it? It’s real. It exists. I’ve gone through my supposedly straight fiance’s phone and caught him hooking up with TS prostitutes, hooking up with CD men on Craigslist, etc. I’ve been physically abused by my download man because that was easier for him than denying sex, or admitting his sexuality.I’ve talked to my man on Craigslist, while posing as a man in lingerie, and got him to admit that he would have sex with me (as the man in makeup and lingerie) with no condoms. I’ve read the HIV statistics on men who have sex with men, and it’s not good. These men are from all races, it’s not a racial phenomenon. It happens as much in the white community as the black community. The lying, cheating, and manipulation put women’s lives at risk. But the warning signs aren’t accurate. Many DL men pretend they don’t like snakes sex to their wives, they act straighter than any straight man. The only real clue that I can provide is: physical abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, disinterest in sex, not wanting to perform oral sex on a woman, not wanting to see the woman ejaculate, not wanting to touch the woman’s private parts with hands or mouth. Always making excuses for not wanting to have sex. Abuse of drugs and alcohol. Keeping phone locked. Causing fights and drama and breaking up and making up over and over again.
