Jamaica's Prime Minister Is Soooo Not Gonna OK Gay Marriage

You know how Jamaica gets a bad rap for hating the gays? That's so mean you guys! The island nation is sooo not homophobic! So what if that one British guy was murdered there; it wasn't because he's gay! And so what if one of Jamaica's biggest cultural exports is a homophobe? He's trying to reform! And besides, Jamaica's Prime Minister Bruce Golding absolutely loves the homos. Oh, wait, that's a big lie?

Yes, yes it is. Golding, who previously said he would never let a gay sit in his Cabinet, is making sure everyone knows Jamaica will never legalize gay marriage under his watch. He told Parliament: "I make no apology in saying decisively and emphatically that the government of Jamaica remains irrevocably opposed to the recognition, legitimization or acceptance of same-sex marriages or same-sex unions. … I will not accept it that homosexuality must be accepted as a legitimate form of behavior or the equivalent of marriage." You know, just in case anyone though the civil liberties constitutional amendment Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms had any chance of passing.

Jamaica is 70% "religious." No equality available.

Another case of someone jumping to unsubstantiated conclusions by misusing statistics. Read http://www.amnestyusa.org/lgbt.....id=1106567 to see more of the problem. Homophobia is well represented but so is murder in general and rape:

One of the highest rates of per capita police killings in the world … Many suspected to be extra-judicial executions

Ranks third in world for per capita murder rate, behind only Columbia and South Africa.

Pervasive problem with political violence concentrated in inner-city "garrison" communities

Endemic problems include very high levels of rape, sometimes involving firearms, and other forms of sexual, physical and mental violence

…. and that is just for starters. In such conditions. sometimes people grasp at staws, including religion. So, is "religion" the cause or a symptom?

@ An Other Greek — I'm not sure most South Africans support gay marriage. Gay rights got included in our new constitution more or less because hardly anyone bothered to read it. The current president has expressed his dislike of gays ("When I was young, a homosexual would not dare to stand up in my presence") but he's toned it down since.

heh, it was that same bible in his precious hands that made sure slavery was socially acceptable for hundreds of years. Mind you, its also because of the legacy of bondage that homohate is what it is in Jamaica. Or the fact that he wouldn't even be prime minister if probably he was darker. Oh the hypocrisy.

dellania "heh, it was that same bible in his precious hands that made sure slavery was socially acceptable for hundreds of years"

What made slavery "socially acceptable" was the wealthy needing cheap labor for things now done with machines. Any reference to the Bible was simply an attempt to justify what they wanted to
do anyway, with sections cherry picked and taken out of context.
The references to slavery in the Bible simply reflects the fact that it was widely accepted two thousand or more years ago.
