What made slavery “socially acceptable” was the wealthy needing cheap labor for things now done with machines. Any reference to the Bible was simply an attempt to justify what they wanted to
do anyway, with sections cherry picked and taken out of context.
The references to slavery in the Bible simply reflects the fact that it was widely accepted two thousand or more years ago.

Mind you, its also because of the legacy of bondage that homohate is what it is in Jamaica. Or the fact that he wouldn’t even be prime minister if probably he was darker. Oh the hypocrisy.

@ An Other Greek — I’m not sure most South Africans support gay marriage. Gay rights got included in our new constitution more or less because hardly anyone bothered to read it. The current president has expressed his dislike of gays (“When I was young, a homosexual would not dare to stand up in my presence”) but he’s toned it down since.

Another case of someone jumping to unsubstantiated conclusions by misusing statistics. Read http://www.amnestyusa.org/lgbt.....id=1106567 to see more of the problem. Homophobia is well represented but so is murder in general and rape:

Endemic problems include very high levels of rape, sometimes involving firearms, and other forms of sexual, physical and mental violence

…. and that is just for starters. In such conditions. sometimes people grasp at staws, including religion. So, is “religion” the cause or a symptom?
