What happens when you pair up the likes of Nick Jonas and James Franco in a psychosexual thriller about hazing rituals, unstoppered sadism, and the lengths frat boys will go in the name of âbrotherhood?â

Based on the controversial memoir Goat by Brad Land, the film promises an unending barrage of perverted sadomasochistic pranks, punishing rites and rituals, homoerotic camaraderie, and typical male bonding gone bad.

As a member of a nation fraternity, Alpha Kappa Lambda, my pledge wee was nothing like that. I belong to the Omicron chapter, which was at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. The chapter house has folded since I was there, but our pledge activities consisted of refurbishing a senior center and learning the fraternity history. There wasn’t any hitting, name calling, or abuse of any kind. So, there may be some fraternities out there that do the stuff suggested by the movie, but I can’t imagine any person of quality would put up with it, so they must be rather bottom of the barrel.
CaliKyle
@MacAdvisor: Neither did my fraternity chapter – there was some mild hazing during my time there mostly involving being naked (did I mention I actually enjoyed being hazed?) but nothing involving sliding in baby pools filled with puke, alcohol induced comas or makeshift branding irons. The worst thing I had to do is walk completely naked into a sorority house and interact with the girls for an hour without covering up, leaving, hiding or getting thrown out.

I always thought all that nonsense was made up for college themed comedy movies and judging by the two comments above it would seem that is correct. If things got as out of hand and violent as portrayed in the trailer who would put up with it? You’d think there would be law suits and that the colleges would put a stop to it.
James
I hope they all wind up in jail.
MarionPaige
so, from this trailer, people are suppose to get excited to get dressed, leave their houses and go to movie theaters to see young guys hazed? I wonder also how all of this translates to foreign audiences. But then,
James Franco probably just saw it as cranking out another movie.
CommentByMale
can queerty stop falling into the ‘gaybaiting’ Franco and Jonas are doing.
Xzamilio
Nah, I’m good

I’d like to see the movie. I actually have the book.
MacAdvisor
@Keebler ILF:
“I actually have the book.”
There’s a book? Seriously? Have you read it? If so, can you describe the plot or is it what we can assume from the trailer? I would think the naked college boys is most of the attraction of this movie and that wouldn’t be as, um, vivid in a book.
heath0043
@Dave Downunder: There are arrests and lawsuits in the news quite often over fraternity hazing and even a couple deaths from hazing every year. Even though many colleges have made rules against it, many haven’t especially since many of the large frats bring millions of dollars a year to the university.

I will never understand the need for humliation, subligation and unnecessary harrassment some “organizations” feel is necessary to create a bond of brotherhood. The “just because it happened to me” is an excuse to prove superiority to no one but themselves. If you feel the need to prove your superiority over a younger version of yourself you have a serious ego problem. Shared experiences of positivity, mentoring and healthy attainment of goals is a much better system to achieve that bond. Humans are not animals at some point we need to rise above and prove it!
Stenar
James Franco is way too old to be playing a frat bro.
LilMesican
Whatever the reason James or Nick had for doing the movie, the fact is that young men have died during hazing rituals. So maybe the movie is not far fetched.
As for the ‘gay baiting’, we do realize that strippers at bars have been doing it for years. Most of the dancers at bars are Straight, yet we still give them our money. (well, I stopped when I turned about 35, for the money I was tipping I could get another drink).

@MacAdvisor: Second paragraph of the article specifically mentions that the film is made from the memoir of the same name. Memoirs are always either books or essays, and overwhelmingly assumed to be true. Memoirs found to be false are quite damaging to the reputation of those who wrote them.
There are a few news articles each year where young men are injured or otherwise traumatized in hazing incidents, and there is also the occasional death. There seems some real psycho-cultural need for this sort of thing, as even in hunter/gatherer bands there are secret societies with sometimes horrific rituals required for membership, or bizarre manhood rituals. Even in the Boy Scouts (admittedly a somewhat bizarre group), the “secret” Order of The Arrow had a bloodletting ceremony to attain the Brotherhood level of membership back in the 1960’s. Can’t imagine they still do that though.

James Franco is so irritating. He thinks he’s cool but he is pathetic.
montydaman
I love James Franco but lately his work is so violent. I love to go see his movies but the violent content stops me dead at the box office. He has done some brilliant stuff. One being “MILK”. He was superb at his character. I have to steer off going to see “GOAT” unfortunately. I’ve seen reports in the news of grazing in the schools and it’s both disgusting and heartbreaking. This would be way to graphic for me and I see it as a large promotion for some creepy kids to follow it’s example. Why is everything so violent in the USA!? I only hope for the viewers that do go, that film ends showing what assholes can do and scares the crap out of people who want to follow this horrific, insane treatment of fellow students who go to school to learn!!! IT’s criminal!
Keebler ILF
@MacAdvisor:
I didn’t read the whole book. Some if it was homoerotic to me.
It looks like the trailer stays true to the book.
It was the book cover that caught my eye in the first place.

@LilMesican: How do you insert a picture in ones profile here???

Oh great…after reading that, I realize that that’s 5 minutes of my life I’ll never get back….

@dwes09: They use markers now, to simulate the blood-mingling aspect. All kinds of appropriated Native American culture going on in OA. I am a Brotherhood member, though I’m no longer in good status, haven’t given them any money in years.
Violent Rainbow
College in America is very… strange.

Interesting
Ogre Magi
Why the name Goat?
Brian
There is no such thing as a gay flick. Flicks don’t have sexual orientations. Only in the minds of desperate gay guys are inaminate objects “gay”.
enlightenone
Since when does “Gross,” disgusting males = “gay?” Nick Jonas, the “gay icon” needs to fire his agents!!!!!!!!!!!!
Daniel-Reader
Ummm… no. This will be playing years from now in the early morning on some strange channel.. and even then, no.
Dave Downunder
@heath0043: Thanks for that information Heath. I have never heard about that side of collage hazing before but it doesn’t surprise me in the least.
Sluggo2007
Nick Jonas and James Franco in a psycho sexual thriller about hazing rituals? Is this their coming out declaration?
osman
@MacAdvisor: Dude you should have pledged elsewhere.Alpha Kappa Lambda sounds like torture too !! do you work in a library by any chance ?
martinbakman
@montydaman: I also am a Franco fan. I will be seeing King Cobra next week at Outfest. I hope there isn’t too much graphic violence.
I’m not surprised Franco took on Goat. Will decide later whether it is something I want to see.
ErikO
Why is this even on an LGBT news site? Is it because they’re apparently both gay and closeted?
ErikO
@Ogre Magi: It’s a memoir about someone that was in a frat. I read the book when I was attending a university. I did not join a frat or even party at them.
davincibarnette
……………never mind.
karrioco
@montydaman: The film actually deals with toxic masculinity and how some men deal with violence. Saw it twice at Sundance, and in fairness, I worked on the film as well. Predictable that it is being marketed this way, but the film deals with a lot more that just frat gross outs.
Look at the track record for the other producer Christine Vachon – Boys Don’t Cry, Carol, Kids – she developed this project for like 10 years, and pretty sure she wouldn’t invest her time on a bro-culture promo. It’s hard to watch, but I hope people give it a chance. I have a young son, and nephews, and its a film I’ll want them to watch and think about. The book it is based on is also a pretty good read.
Franco plays a returning, not current, frat member. I think even he recognizes he’s not the right age to play a frat kid.
And I think even robho3 will like/hate him in this đ
Sean C.
so did anyone at Queerty actually watch this movie? the title of this article “ames Franco Hazes Nick Jonas In New Way-Gay Frat Flick” is irresponsibly misleading on what actually happens in this movie, Franco is barely in the movie at all, amd it being a gay frat flick is a huge stretch.
