In case you missed the memo and your Facebook newsfeed is filled with foodie pics and cutesy kitten videos, Janet Jackson is back from a too-long hiatus with a new album and upcoming tour. Her first single “No Sleeep” featuring J. Cole is a delectable slow groove and the moody, sultry video features the singer slinking around what’s believed to be her own home because, you know, there’s no time for sleep sleeep.
The 49-year-old singer’s 65-date Unbreakable World Tour kicks off in Vancouver on August 31 and tickets are selling exceptionally well.

The song is boring and so is the video. Janet could be doing much more exciting music than this. Rhythm Nation was her best album. At least she was singing about social issues of the time on that album. The song “Scream” that she performed with Michael was the one of the best songs ever in my opinion. It was edgy and thought provoking, but still made you feel like dancing your a** off.

She continues to disappoint. This isn’t the 90s anymore. Every album is primarily the same: inane talking in between songs, 1 or 2 orgasmic songs, light songs like this one and then maybe a more rocking number. She never grows as an artist. Most interesting thing she’s done since Rhythm Nation was Scream with Michael. Sad because she’s talented.

For nostalgia artists like Janet and Madonna, albums are simply a marketing tool to sell tickets for the arena tours. At the end of the day the albums are forgetable, but the tours are like the second coming of Jesus. Can’t wait!
