Jesse Connolly Will Save Marriage In Maine. Or Lose It

Jesse Connolly is blowing up the spot! Why should you know his name? Because the two-week ticking clock that will decide whether Maine keeps its gay marriage legislation is practically resting on this fella’s back.

As the chief of No on 1/Protect Maine Equality, it’s Connolly’s job to convince Mainers to endorse equality and fight off misleading attacks from religious orgs and the front group Stand For Marriage Maine. Connolly, who’s popped up recently in the Los Angeles Times and, last night, on Rachel Maddow’s show, is also the former campaign manager of Maine’s Gov. John Baldacci, who reluctantly signed same-sex marriage legislation in May.

The one thing he’s got going for him? Besides a paid staff and five statewide offices? The Yes On 1 effort is taking its playbook straight from the Prop 8 effort — which, while effective, is now entirely predictable.

It will be very easy and simple to blame ONE person if they fail. But everyone should really ask themselves: what did I do?

What are gay people in Maine doing? You can vote NOW so do it! Why don’t you bring your friends along too? Once you and your friends have voted go out and tell other like-minded NO on Question 1 voters to do the same and if you have to, give them a ride as well. Why don’t gay people in Maine ask their local GAY-FRIENDLY churches (which has endorsed NO on Question 1) to bus people to the polls?

Connolly’s efforts were heroic and we can all learn from his leadership. Our Constitutional rights should not be voted on by any population. The constitution guarantees equality and this is our saving grace.
