Guys. The Modern Family same-sex episode is totally coming, so chillz, OK? They’re almost ready to shoot it! And showrunner Steve Levitan is sticking to his script that they were going to do this scene before y’all started complaining in May.
“We’ve had an episode planned for a long time that dealt with that subject of [Cameron and Mitchell’s PDA],” Levitan tells E!. “So it almost bothers us that there was a little bit of controversy about it. Because we don’t want to appear that we’re answering that criticism.”
It kinda sounds just like actor Eric Stonestreet’s take on the whole thing, but now he’s upgraded his tune: “I think it’s great that people care so much,” Stonestreet says. “I always am confused why they don’t worry about shows that don’t have any gay characters on them. They should put some focus on them as well, but we’ll give the audience exactly what they need.”
What we need are more uncomfortable ethnic jokes from you, Cam. But we’ll take what we can get.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Mitchell” character demonstrates the character qualities of someone who is uptight in all aspects of his life. Translations the character would very much have a problem with PDAs.
Certainly I think with the “Cam” character being the polar opposite and comfortable with PDA, addressing the issue would be perfect fodder for a an episode of the show.

Why should they kiss? There is absolutely no sexual tension or attraction between them.

They are lying, there was no plan to do it and their origional reactions showed that. It was soon after that they claimed to already have a show, but in truth they had no script.
The issue is, that the Cam Character, pushes Mitchel, attends parties with Mitchel, etc… I get that Mitchel is supposedly nervous about PDA, but the CAM character would have at least wanted a kiss in the cheek when they are in their home alone. Additionally, trying to convince me that somebody so terrified of their own homosexuality that they are afraid to cheek kiss their partner, would be ok walking down the street with their partner pushing a baby carridge is asking a bit much.
So Modern Family execs, you can pretend to be so “Offended” that people questioned you but look, you got caught, deal with it and move on.
The Inkling
I totally agree with the comments here. I’m really annoyed that the fans are getting such grief about our concerns for the show. I’ll admit, I didn’t notice the lack of kisses until they BLAZINGLY displayed it in the airport scene shown above, but at that very point the execs should have seen it coming.
And the idea that we should be satisfied with what we get is pretty primitive, though I agree, it’s probably just a defense mechanism. If we have a gay couple in our tv shows they should show them acting just as realistic as they show the heterosexual couples, don’t show us a hetero couple that kiss and touch all the time, and a gay guy that kisses and touches his in-laws all the time, but not his own husband (unless you have a believable explanation, as they seem to have managed to come up with, last minute obviously).
And yes, if it had been on purpose, they would have addressed it in the first season.
