Queerty is better as a member
The bitter Gays deserve him….
He’s just a washed-up fame whore…. with no respect for anyone or thing but himself….oh, and of course the money he’ll receive as others are brutalized or killed.
“The entire Olympic team is not made up of LGBT people. It’s people who’ve sacrificed their livelihoods, it’s people who’ve sacrificed their parents’ finances and health and sometimes even marriages to get that one chance at glory.”
If it was easy, everyone would do it and if you can’t handle the scrutiny that comes with fame, get a job at McDonalds or some office.
Oh god, you’d think Weir was talking about his family investing in college for him to earn his doctorate. He’s a figure skater, he’s not saving lives or doing god’s work or something. Johnny Weir is someone who has been indulged by his parents from day 1. And frankly, the Olympics produce a lot of people like him who are really not good representations of the country or even people as a whole.
Just another little selfish “Me Me Me” rant from the spoiled entitled little douche.
Hey Johnny guess who else has sacrificed things, the actual heroes, you know, people who came out when they had something to lose. People who work in factories in Nebraska, or Car repair shops in Ohio, or sue for marriage rights in Oklahoma. Or, you know, people killed or jailed in Russia.
So here is an idea, Weir, you never one the gold because you chickened out on doing the quad jump that you had practiced, and you aren’t a good commentator. Why don’t you go back home and Michelle Kwan or somebody with some talent can do the announcing. Just think of how much more time that will give you to buy ridiculous outfits and try to pretend that you are anything but a sad out of date joke.
He sounds like an entitled and selfish little queen. By being a part of this travesty, he is essentially endorsing what is going on whether he wants to admit it or not. The straight people can’t stand him for being so effeminate and now the gays can’t either.
If we get so butthurt over people being outed why don’t we support an athlete’s choice to not be an activist?
Not being an activist is quite different than actually supporting a country that is killing us.
The fact that you would try to confuse those issues seems to indicate some things about you.
Weir is clearly battling some powerful inner demons. He is more worthy of pity than loathing.
@Cam: I’ve not confused anything. How is he supporting a country that is killing us as opposed to simply choosing not to be an activist?
I imagine this won’t go over well. I don’t think Weir has worded his position elegantly, however how many of us are willing to quit our jobs to go protest Russia? Show of hands? We might donate money or declare that we won’t watch and will boycott the sponsors but how many of us would put our careers on hold so we can devote ourselves to defeating Russia on this issue?
That is essentially what some of you are asking Olympians to do over these horrific anti-gay laws. They trained hard for the world’s greatest athletic competition and you think its’ selfish for them to take part because the host country has laws that harm us.
Again, Weir made some exceedingly odd moves like wearing a Russian uniform in an appearance – I don’t see how that could possibly be defensible – but why is every Olympian somehow selfish?
Can’t it be both?
@Cam: You mean, like both not being an activist and supporting a country that is killing us?
Easy, wearing their uniform as he attacks the very idea of a boycott and anything else that could harm the image of his beloved Russia while gays there are being killed. Defending Russia, and acting like it’s the gay community that is the problem is not refusing to be an activist, it is choosing sides.
Hang in there, Johnny! I applaud Mr. Weir (Voronov?) for sticking to what he believes in. He’s doing HIS activism HIS way, which is more than I can say for most of the sheep in gay community that only make a move it’s been “approved” by other gays.
@Cam: Absurd. he is not supporting a country that is killing us anymore than any of the other athletes who choose their life long ambition over politics. Get a grip on reality with your extremist rhetoric.
I get Weir’s point that this is a lifetime achievement- I personally in that situation would not boycott but if I won a medal I would pull a stunt as a big F-you to mother Russia- even if I got a DQ I’d know how talented I was. I am also the kind of person that chose to be totally out going through my career training with the thought of if my specialty wouldn’t accept me as who I am it didn’t deserve to have me so I guess it’s a little different
Who knows? Maybe seeing Johnny flame on in commentary will help some Russian queer ppl get through their lives a little easier.
Look, I get it, you are here to defend him. But please don’t lie. When he goes on TV in a Russian Uniform and attacks any type of protest against Russia’s behavior that is absolutely offering support to them.
The fact that you continue to refuse to acknowledge this behavior of his shows that your agenda is set and the truth is irrelevant. So please, by all means continue to claim that Weir is just an innocent little Naif wandering the forrest not knowing anything that is going on.
@Matt G: No, Matt. He’s not going to inspire gays in Russia. He’s only helping Russia kill their gays per Cam.
@Cam: You don’t get it. I’m not here to defend him. I object to the extremist armchair rhetoric. But by all means, you know what’s in my mind better than I do. He is not supporting Russia. The way you reach at your own conclusions about people’s motivations really says a lot about your mental state per your own logic. Paranoid queen.
@Cam: Actually Boitano also, when he came out tried to do that “I’m ashamed” excuse of claiming he was so many things, and only one of them was gay.
Each in his on time and way its not like Aaron Schock.
So lets see, now you are name calling. I have pointed out twice that he putt on a Russian Uniform and has attacked the idea of anything being done or said to take Russia to task. Instead of name-calling me and using homophobic insults, how about you simply explain how putting on the uniform and attacking the idea of taking Russia to task is NOT supporting them.
I’m all ears, lets here you justify the behavior as non-support.
@doug105: Or this jackass Weir.
@Cam: Name calling and homophobic insults? Ooooh. Funny that you can be a nasty little insulting queen but when someone does it to you it’s all the sudden a fucking hate crime. Drama queen. I’ve seen what he’s said and unlike you I’ve been able to view his words objectively. He is not supporting any country killing gays. Grow up. He’s likely fed up with armchair extremists like you who tell him how he is supposed to represent himself and the gay community so he has chosen to be indelicate with his words. He doesn’t owe you anything and from your behavior you don’t deserve his support. You’re just another victim of the gay-ghettoization of our community who actually doesn’t respect individuality and diversity of opinion.
The reason you got such flak is because you’ve dismissed the reasoning and heartfelt opinions of the LGBT community–which strongly believes the Olympics should be boycotted–with totally disrespectful and ASININE comments like calling protestors and activists “idiots.”
Guess what, Johnny? FUCK YOU–you spoiled, entitled little queen. FUCK YOU.
Oh girl, just shut the fuck up. Seriously, you just stepped in it.
My My My, for somebody who is NOT here just to defend him you sure have gotten furious when I asked you a simple question. Please explain how his putting on a Russian Uniform and attacking the idea of any repercussions for Russia is not supporting them.
You have responded by several personal attacks on me, and funny enough your go to insults always seem to be gay related. You could have called me an idiot, a jerk, an ass etc… But you REALLY seem to love “Queen” as the worst thing you can think of to call somebody. A little self loathing perhaps?
Oh, and in case you need some help trying to figure out how to claim he wasn’t supporting Russia, let me give you a picture of him while he was out there attacking even the idea of anything being said or done to Russia for their treatment of gays.
There you go, now you can feel free to foam at the mouth and call me a queen again to avoid my simple question.
Johnny Weir isn’t doing what we want him to do. Let’s bully him until he kills himself.
Translation: The people who aren’t killed should be allowed to totally ignore civil rights abuses.
For once, I agree with Weir. I have been sick of the whining queers and queens for quite a long time. Johnny Weir said it beautifully, however, I disagree with what Russia’s stand is on GLBT people. There is SO much more to life than being “GLBT.” Methinks we need to get over ourselves for awhile. Marriage equality is great and it will win but let’s no damage our own image, i.e. stupid stunts at Pride Parades! show a little dignity and class and our rights might move along even faster. You can disagree, but try to find something more exciting in life than your inborn lifestyle!
@Cam: Moron. Gay moron, because we’re gay and this is a gay site….but it’s somehow a homophobic insult for one gay person to call another gay person a queen. It’s that very type of extremism that I am referring to. Again, you whine about someone being rude to you when you were doing it too. So it’s okay for you to do it buy not for someone to do it to you. Do I as I say, not as I do. Wearing a Russian uniform and calling out tired queens like you for telling him how he should conduct his life is not a demonstration of support for a country that is killing us. Idiot. Gay idiot.
So now instead of answering a simple question you claim that pointing out Weir is supporting a country that kills gays is “Bullying Him”
Again, your desperation to go to extreme lengths to deflect from the truth here shows you do indeed seem to have the agenda to defend him no matter what the truth is.
Oh, and again, you still haven’t been able to answer my question. Just thought I’d remind you. And here is that picture again.
I came out in 1963 when I was 15. I find the hatred and vitriol filled comments on these pages depressing and not constructive. Rather than savage a young man for having the courage of his convictions wouldn’t we be better served by contacting people in positions of authority and making our objectives known to them? Write, vote, march, spread information and contact the media, Johnny Weir is not our enemy. Vladimir Putin is the enemy.
Oh fuck off Weir you disgraceful traitor. Selling us out so you can laugh at poor people herded into death camps.
I hope the laws you love are literally the death of you.
@Dakotahgeo: No, Dak. There is only one way for us gays to think and act. You must follow the herd or be destroyed.
Actually you tried to doge the question. He didn’t call out “Tired Queens” he attacked the idea of holding Russia Responsible for it’s own policies. You should ask yourself this. Why are you so infuriated over this if your agenda isn’t to defend Weir at all costs? If you work for him I get it, but if you don’t then perhaps you should give your replies a read through and try to figure that out.
To the rest of the folks on here, you notice the few people coming in here to defend Weir ALL seem to love using homophobic slurs to attack the gay community or anybody disagreeing with Weir? Extremely telling I think.
@DShucking: Basically a minority of the GLBT community is whining about being bullied, so they turn around and bully others. Nice. No wonder people don’t take us seriously.
@Cam: Oh I answered your question. You just choose to ignore it because you can’t accept anything other than your tired, old world point of view. I am not defending him. I am objecting to your ridiculous closed minded behavior and yes, you are a big hypocrite. It’s okay to insult others as long as they don’t insult me. It’s not okay to bully us but it’s okay for us to bully others. Grow up and adjust your outlook for the time’s we live in.
@2eo: Yes, he isn’t doing what we say so he should be killed. Lovely.
@DShucking: said.. “@Dakotahgeo: No, Dak. There is only one way for us gays to think and act. You must follow the herd or be destroyed.
Interesting you would claim that not following the heard will get you destroyed since it is you and DShucking who have been on here insultingly attacking anybody who dared to disagree with you. Kind of like the strategy of the right wing bigots isn’t it? They attack gays and then scream that THEY are the victims.
You certainly have the act of NOM and the Westborough Baptist Church down to a “T” don’t you?
No, what you are doing is lying. You did not answer my question you simply said something IS, because you say it is. As for being insulting, please pull up a post where I have name called as you have done. your issue seems to be that you become unhinged when people disagree with you, and you lash out with homophobic insults. I sure hope your neighborhood Barista doesn’t run out of whatever your drink of choice is.
And if somebody disagreeing with you is that uncomfortable for you, just imagine what the gays in Russia go through for a second. Or is that beyond you?
@Cam: Yes, I’m a homophobe because I called you a queen. Keep displaying your paranoid, inferiority complex for us. It’s not Johnny Weir we should be ashamed of. It’s queens like you.
@Cam: You’re the one who can’t handle anyone disagreeing with you. It’s a symptom of the gay-ghettoization of our community where you’ve been living in a gay bubble where everyone agrees with you but then you get out there in that big old world and realize it’s 2014 and we’re not all the stereotypes that you’ve grown so comfortable with. Wake up.
@2eo: R*cist? Please explain.
@KDub: THANK YOU! I tired of Queen Cam’s sputterings long ago. Always the victim!
@Dakotahgeo: You called Cam a queen. That makes you a r*cist homophobe, apparently.
@DShucking: THANK YOU! Queen Cam… always the victim!
I agree with Johnny Weir completely.
First of all, we know the vast majority of Queerty readers hate feminine gay men (just read the comments on most stories, look at all the articles fawning over mean with hairy chests, beards, blah blah blah) and love to hate Johnny Weir because he’s not an activist, doesn’t do what the community thinks he should, etc.
Athletes train usually their entire lives for a chance to go to this one event. While I agree that they should take a stand against the injustices, it is not their job to do so nor are they required to.
How many of you would risk your careers, something that puts food on your table and clothes on your back. Not many, I would guess. I see very few people actually going to Russia to make a difference; you’re just doing what Americans do best and think throwing money at a problem is a solution and makes you some sort of ‘activist warrior’ deserving of praise.
The Olympics are about the entire world coming together, celebrating and competing. It is not about politics and it shouldn’t be made about politics. Yes, just by him being there, being openly gay, etc. he is doing more than throwing money at organizations is going to do. It’s the mature thing to do.
Going there and taking a stand, being public and rebuking Russia (while in their country) in the public spotlight is hardly an effective means to an end.
I get that his comments aren’t popular and I completely understand why, but at the same time people are basically demanding he jeopardize something he has devoted almost his entire life to. I’m a very outspoken person who stands up for what I believe in but over the years, I’ve learned that you have to pick and choose your battles.
I might be able to stand up and say “I stood up for what was right” but what did it get me? One personal instance landed me in the unemployment line for 3 months, drained my savings and put me in the place where, for the next 4 years of my life, I would be struggling to pay for a roof over my head. But damnit I stood up for my beliefs.
Okay, but where did that standing up for what was right get me? Nowhere.
That employer still holds the same beliefs. Nothing has changed.
Lawyers told me I had no legal standing to fight back, despite having documented evidence of discrimination over a 2 year period. It wasn’t enough.
All it did was fuck ME over for the next 4 years, all because I chose the wrong battle to fight at the wrong time. It’s called being smart and making calculated decisions that are better for everyone in the long run.
@2eo: Huh? Unnnngh!!!
@Jawsch: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
“@Cam: Yes, I’m a homophobe because I called you a queen. Keep displaying your paranoid, inferiority complex for us. It’s not Johnny Weir we should be ashamed of. It’s queens like you.”
No, actually I said that you use homophobic language. You either have a huge problem with reading comprehension or more likely you pretend that something was said so you don’t have to deal with the actual conversation that is going on.
Let me remind you. I simply asked you how Weir’s putting on a Russian Uniform and attacking any idea that Russia should be held accountable for it’s actions. And in return you seem to have flipped out, name called, and refused to provide any specifics as to why this was not support.
Again, if you don’t have a solid agenda to simply defend Weir at all costs, why the fury and inability to have a rational discussion?
@Dakotahgeo: said… “I tired of Queen Cam’s sputterings long ago. Always the victim!”
Nice try, but I pointed out a post or two back that both of your behavior exactly mimicked the Anti-gay bigots like NOM in claiming after they attacked somebody that they were the victim. If you are going to try to bow out of the discussion you should probably try to find something different to say than just repeating what I said a few posts back.
But you know….nice try.
@DShucking: Ahhh… THAT’S my problem! I was wondering… ;-)
It’s one thing for Weir to say he doesn’t support a boycott. It’s quite another thing to go on TV dressed in a Russian army uniform and take financial payments from the Russian government. Weir IS supporting Russia and their stance on gays.
I agree with the posts above. Weir’s parents have indulged this little brat since he was young and now he is an attention whore. His career is over so now he needs new ways of gaining the attention he craves. He is a BAD example of gay people. He does not represent me at all.
@Cam: LOLOL… POOR BB! Victim again. Ohhh, I’ll be here looong after you disappear… all’s the pity for ya!
@Cam: “I simply asked you how Weir’s putting on a Russian Uniform and attacking any idea that Russia should be held accountable for it’s actions.” What? I don’t understand this sentence at all. You were insulting me first but when I insulted you in a way not pre-approved by you then all the sudden being insulting is bad. Victim. Do as we say, not as we do. You’re the one who can’t demonstrate that Weir is supporting the killing of gays. Drown in your self-pity and outdated rage.
@DShucking: Heh heh heh… apparently so. Oh wellll….
I’ve asked you before to please point out where I name called etc… you.
And the fact that you claim you already answered my question, then when I point out that no you haven’t you now claim you can’t understand the question is interesting.
But again, you know….nice try.
@Kamuriie: The GLBT community does not strongly believe the Olympics should be boycotted because that would imply that we are a monolithic entity comprised of nothing but individuals who all agree with one another. You need only look at this page to know that is not true.
@Cam: I said you insulted me and you did. Funny you support the bullying of Weir and anyone else who doesn’t say as you do but don’t take responsibility for yourself. Please keep talking in circles, “You didn’t answer my question. I answered your question. You can’t read. Johnny Weir is killing gays.” Boring.
@DShucking: Cam should have been plastered against the wall a long time ago for not agreeing with us wholeheartedly, right? That seems to be the take on Cam’s rants. Poooor Baby!
“@Cam: I said you insulted me and you did. Funny you support the bullying of Weir and anyone else who doesn’t say as you do but don’t take responsibility for yourself. Please keep talking in circles, “You didn’t answer my question. I answered your question. You can’t read. Johnny Weir is killing gays.” Boring.”
Actually I asked you to point out where I supposedly insulted you, you claim that I insulted you first, and yet everytime I have asked you can’t seem to be able to find any evidence.” Again, if you answered the question I asked you correctly, as you keep claiming you should be able to point that out too.
So please point out which post I supposedly started attacking you first, and in which post you specifically answered my question rather than just saying “It is”.
Oh and nice change back, first you claimed you answered my question, then claimed you couldn’t even understand the question, then when I pointed that out you changed back to saying you’d already answered it.
Just wanted to let you know that it was glaringly obvious you keep trying to dodge and deflect every time you get called out on your inconsistencies.
@Cam: “Actually I asked you to point out where I supposedly insulted you” Funny that someone who demands accountability from others refuses to take accountability for his own actions. You have the conversation right in front of you. Find it yourself. I did answer your question. The statement, not question, that I re-posted and was confused by is actually incomprehensible. That’s why I asked what the hell you were saying. It’s an indication of how unhinged you’ve become over not getting your way.
“I simply asked you how Weir’s putting on a Russian Uniform and attacking any idea that Russia should be held accountable for it’s actions.”
@2eo: And yet you post two comments away. Interesting.
@DShucking: But, damnit, you disagreed with Cam! That is NOT allowed. It causes him to go into uncontrollable rants and acting out, putting his “Pouting Meter on a par with (supposedly) Johnny Weir. You just can’t win with Weine… errr, I mean, whiners!
@Dakotahgeo: Calling Cam names just shows that you have no argument other then hating him for calling you out on your bullshit. Something he seems to be really good at btw. You and anyone else that’s factually challenged. I like your avatar btw. If fits.
@Cam: Cam Cam
@DShucking: said.. [email protected]
“Interesting you would claim that not following the heard will get you destroyed since it is you and DShucking who have been… yadda, yadda, yadda.”
For cryin’ out loud, Cam… I think you mean “following the HERD….” Geeezzzz, Louise! And here I thought you were a fart smell…, errr, smart feller?! My bad.
@Stache1: LOLOL… My dear Jerk! I don’t hate Cam. Actually I pity the poor fool. Outside of being entertaining (you get what you pay for), he has no value. Facts don’t convince stupid people like Cam. He’s definitely Republican material.
Surely everyone has the right to their own opinions even if we don’t always agree. I can see merit in both sides of this argument, both for and against a boycott. I hope that any LGBT athletes who compete in these games will do so with pride and dignity as surely that is the best way to provide positive role models for both Russians and non-Russians alike.
@2eo: You call out someone else for name calling after you’ve been name calling? Funny that. Still waiting for you to explain how I am r*cist, if you can. This ought to be good.
Why are my posts censored yet DShucking and Dako are allowed to be as abusive as they please?
@2eo: I think it’s the word r*cist. We can say all sorts of bad words here but not that one, for some reason. try again.
All of the hate going on above is so sad. These people have given everything they have of their bodies and their money to athletically represent this country. I am ashamed of some of these comments. You can disagree with someone all you want. Its a free country. Personal attacks and name calling are WRONG!
@2eo: I noticed that your abusive post toward me where you also called me r*cist has been removed. I’d still like an explanation as to how I’m a r*cist.
I get frustrated when people argue so vehemently and get it mostly wrong. I have no idea what boycotting the Olympics means individually. The US government chose not to pull out of the games. So, no boycott. I may choose to email sponsors of the games and tell them that I am not happy about their affiliation. I may cut up a credit card from a sponsor. I may chose not to watch. But, I have no real right to pass judgment on others to force them not to watch or to continue to use their Visa cards (a sponsor).
If Johnny Weir does not have a job, are we going to pay him? No. The man needs to work and this is what he does. Is he a traffic accident when he opens his mouth? Often. Sometimes he gets it right, but when he gets it wrong he is really annoying. I get some people don’t like him. Is he a little self-important? Yeah, like a lot of people who are bitching about him.
Find something more important to do with all this anger about Russia. Johnny Weir is not the problem. He is just any easy diversion from getting us to do something that might actually make a difference.
@Jawsch: Oh please, the Olympics is not a big global “We are the World” moment for the human race. It’s an advertising opportunity, a propagandist machine, and a playing piece for whichever country hosts it. It’s powerplay. The only people who think it’s about sportsmanship are the people trying to schill it to the public.
Let’s face it, you can be an athlete anywhere in the world at any time if you want to. The Olympics is all about just be privileged and ambitious enough to try and push and shove yourself into an elite class. Those girl gymnasts are ruining their bodies even for this opportunity, they’re hardly in school, and after a certain age they don’t have careers. But a lot of people’s parents and coaches inflate their egos to a point where that isn’t even a visible reality- such is the case of Johnny Weir. He’s delusional.
He is, in essence, saying his personal devotion to figure skating takes priority over protesting the incarceration, discrimination, suppression, and torture of thousands of gay men and women. A SPORT is more important to him.
He also says the entire team isn’t made up of LGBT people….so f–king what? We should ALL band together in the interest of protecting the defenseless.
Wow, 78 comments and not one included a cure for cancer, nor mentioned Tom Daley.
@DShucking: To be honest, while I supported moving the Olympics I have never thought that a boycott helped — and I supported his right not to be an activist UNTIL this article. Reading his words — wow — they reek of entitlement, and that always puts me off
He is nothing but a flash on ice. I think he ought to just emigrate to Mother Russia and see how it really is.
@Spike: I’m glad you’re keeping track. I was getting depressed not seeing Tom Daley’s name in any of this. But Queerty beat you to it – he’s mentioned in the Davey Wavey article. *of course*
Dip his ass in sequins, and throw him to the Tsarina’s of Moscow!
Johnny if you would have been neutral about anti-gay policies in Russia then I’d agree with you. But you chose to infuse your own pro-Kremlin political activism into Russian Olympics. You were there in Russia media and globally mocking pro-LGBT activists, dismissing severity of Russia’s homophobic laws, going on TV and supporting Putin’s olympics while wearing a red army uniform like the outlandish clown that you were your entire life. So fuck you and your sacrifice for sport. There are men who make greater sacrifices in their lives for society; sport is just entertainment. Humanity can survive without your corporatized, exploitative, multi-bilion dollar olympics.
You want to fck LGBT for personal gain and you want us to continue recognizing your name so you can leach off your past career.
@Pistolo: A sport, his current career, that’s he’s devoted his life to.
Even if it were me, I wouldn’t do it and I’m quite the outspoken individual who isn’t afraid to speak my mind any time, anywhere. As I mentioned before, standing up for my beliefs got me fired from a job and ruined my life for the next 4 years.
But where did that standing up for what was right get me? Nowhere except the unemployment line.
He’s devoted his life to something, rather YOU think it’s important or not, he does. It has been his life and he feels making a political statement would be counter productive to what he has devoted much of his life to. “A sport” or not.
So what if he doesn’t want to do what YOU and OTHERS want him to do. That’s not your choice, it’s his.
Do I think he should stand up for LGBT rights? Of course.
Do I despise him, call him names and condemn him for not doing it? No.
Because it’s not something fit for everyone and not everyone who is gay needs to be a champion for LGBT rights nor should they be.
It’s his decision to make and I’m fairly certain none of us have room to be throwing stones at people.
Yes, I think he should make a stand but that by no means is a requirement on his part nor am I going to shout childish crap at him and all this other nonsense.
So what, I have more important things to devote my time to than worrying rather or not a “celebrity” is going to use his status to make a political statement in another country.
What would his actually doing that accomplish or solve? Do you people really think Russia would just reverse all of their laws and change their opinions toward LGBT people because some athletes at the Olympics made a political statement and took a stand?
Let’s be real here.
Instead of sitting on our asses at our computers or on our couches, why don’t WE (the people bitching, moaning and shouting about how other people need to be doing things) get up and, oh I don’t know, DO THINGS ourselves?
Or are we just perpetuating the ideology of ‘make someone else do it’?
He’s a vain airhead and will be ridiculous on the panel. Too bad his hot Russian husband “has to work” and won’t be joining him. He’s uninteresting, obnoxious, self-centered and wearing out his niche on B-List celebrity shows.
Look at all these gay bullies wishing bodily harm on Weir just because he thinks and lives differently. Sigh. Proof that gay men are extremely hypocritical and their own worst enemies. Let’s forget about Russia for a minute and focus on all the in-house homophobia!
His “career” has been over for some time. He’s an egotistical airhead.
His husband/parner(?) is Russian and they feel safe in their family bubble. I’m sure he loves his hubsand and his in-laws and he has come to love Russian culture. That’s fine in a vacuum, but he doesn’t realize, or just doesn’t care that as a public figure, his overt support of the Russian Gov’t, as a man who is gay, is an affront to several in the LGBT world. He is not savvy/smart enough to separate his love of Russian culture expressed through his husband and in-laws from the Government. This has blown up in his face and he chose a side and he will live with it. Some will forever despise him for it. Personally, he comes across as a hypocritical apologist for the Gov’s anti-gay laws, even if that’s not his intent.
He was very very talented but spent his best years famewhoring and not training as hard as he needed. Never lived up to his potential as a result. Now he’s trying to have a career in media and is making an ass of himself regularly and nobody really cares about him anymore anyway.
Should be an example for someone like Tom Daley on what not to do when you become quite famous in a not-so-popular sport where’s no money. Even though Tom is already much more successful in his sport and seems commited to work and fight for olympic gold hard.
Johnny, bitch, please! Get over yourself. What a f@#$ing sell-out.
And, let’s not forget that Johnny boy never won an Olympic medal and miserably failed at the world championships. He needs to STFU and go away.
@KDub: Thank you. This has been our downfall for all of the years of struggle in the GLBT community. A house divided cannot stand/survive and thanks to the many thousands of GLBT people who have done the work to get us where we are today did not sit behind computer keyboards and gripe and complain about Olympic Champions. They were out walking the talk and doing the hard work. The entire arguments here remind me of the Immigration problem/lack of jobs problem in our country. I know for a fact that the undocumented immigrants aren’t the ones complaining about how ‘tough’ they have it… they’re out looking for the jobs and working. So I tire very easily from reading these trite little comments about how an Olympic champion chooses to live HIS life. Now go get your cookie, milk, and blanket and unlax!
@Kenover: Sorry to disappoint you but Johnny Weir is doing just fine in his chosen field. As a young man, his future is just starting and looking pretty darn bright! What are YOU doing to make this earth a better place to live?
Who is (s)he?
I hate those type of celebs who declare themselves martyrs for having a controversial opinion. They crave the attention and demand to be worshipped.
Mr. Weir- What you, and other athletes, have sacrificed to attain your goals has been for your own sake, and that’s perfectly fine, so long as your rewards don’t come at some one else’s freedom/life Would you have said the same thing if the ovens were burning in 1936? Would you have participated in the Olympics that year, because YOU had sacrificed to get there?
I think some of these governments want to be wiped from the face of the Earth – kind of like suicide by cop – instead suicide by violating the human rights of hundreds of millions of people who decide one ordinary day to get revenge. It has happened many times before. Think of all the authoritarian governments that have been wiped out in the last 100 years. Simply count the number of politicians committing human rights violations (throw in the religious leaders violating human rights for good measure) and then count the number of people experiencing human rights violations. I think the LGBTA community gets picked on base on some mistaken notion that the LGBTA community is somehow above getting revenge – didn’t any of these people understand the significance of Stonewall?
I wish he would just find another third rate reality show to star in on the Bravo network and go away. If he is an NBC commentator at the Olympics I will change the channel.
@alan.l.taylor13: Roy Cohn thanks you for your support. Surely, you remember Roy, right? Another gay man who had the courage of his convictions. Weir is entitled to his position, but we are also entitled to disagree with his position and point out its effect on our community. That’s how we’ve gotten to this point, don’t you recall?
Bravo, Johnny Weir, for your conviction. I totally agree with you. Your sexuality is secondary. You have worked hard, and sacrificed alot to be invited to the Olympics as a contender. You have decided that being an Olympic contender is most important for you at this point of your life. Nobody, can dissagree with your personal decision. You deserve this opportunity. Hopefully, you will have other opportunities to speak out and represent the Gay Agenda, in a very positive way. Nobody has the right to default you for your conviction. Only a very few people get to compete in the World Olympics. This is your moment to shine as an Olympian-whether you are gay or straight or anything else. There are a lot of small minds out there that, obviously, do not understand what this honor means to you.I wish you the very best of luck. If you win, that will be a terrific example for all mankind and this country. Than, you will be an example for people who are gay everywhere!Go for the GOLD and best of luck!
Roy Cohn was an evil sick terrible human being. He spent his life in the closet, and was viewed by the public, and even his biographers, as a dispicable lawyer that represented the stars and VIP’s by unlawful ways. He was disbarred and died of HIV/AIDS alone, desperate, and unloved by the world. How can you jar, compare him to this Olympic contender? That is a totally ridiculous comparison, and totally unfair.
@BEN COOPER: Thank you for this and your first comment. I believe our extremism is helping us lose credibility along with individual battles. Equating Johnny Weir to Roy Cohen is just one over the top example.
@BEN COOPER: How can you support Mr Weir when he shows so little concern to gay people suffering in Russia?
@Dakotahgeo: Bright future? He’s a getting older and he’s an odd person to say the least.
@Dakotahgeo: Well I definitely agree on the divided part. This community has turned from productive activism to “do as I do and think as I think, or you’re self-loathing and better off dead”. What a way to show tolerance and acceptance! What happened to leading by example? If it’s okay to wish bodily harm on Weir for having a different perspective, then it’s okay for some homophobe to bash an unsuspecting gay guy’s head in for holding his partner’s hand while walking down the street. This hypocrisy is something the gay community will eventually have to handle in order to finally EVOLVE. Let’s hope it’s sooner than later.
@BEN COOPER: You don’t seem to be up on current events. Weir is not competing at the Olympics. He will serve as a commentator for NBC. It helps to know the facts.
@BEN COOPER: Not at all. The commenter lauded Weir for having the courage of his convictions. Roy Cohn similarly had the courage of his convictions. As you point out, they were contemptible convictions. Supporting the Russian government in the manner and to the extent that Weir continues to do is equally contemptible. The point of my Cohn analogy is to point out that having courage of one’s convictions does not avoid consideration of the value/morality of those convictions. As a separate point, you seem to have gotten your understanding of Roy Cohn from Kushner’s play. It is not completely accurate. Roy Cohn had friends at the end, including NY’s favorite closet case, Ed Koch.
@Dakotahgeo: Clearly, you have no direct experience with gay rights activism because you would not suffer from such false understanding. The opposition to Weir (and the recent action by QN) are part of a long history of calling out not just straight opponents, but also our own who stand in opposition to our battle for equality. You accuse others of not having been engaged in activism, but you really only expose yourself as the keyboard commando.
My Uncle Miles recently got a year 2012 Chevrolet Traverse SUV by working from a computer. Learn More……. http://iop.li/3k0
@KDub: Nothing like stretching the truth to try to make a tendentious point. No one is advocating that Weir deserves to be assaulted. And if a stray troll or two did, why is it that you are keen to give those comments credence (instead of seeing them as mere trolls) to try to condemn the community as a whole? The answer to this question betrays your agenda. There is no hypocrisy because there has never been a movement to physically assault anyone in the pursuit of our rights. If you were truly concerned about the gay community or had engaged in any activism yourself you would know this.
@Joincny: Ohhhhhh, I have a long list of “those” people. Remember, one day YOU’LL be on that list… you can run, but….”
@jar: Listen, asshat… I was in protests when you were in diapers, or before that. So were millions of other people. We just don’t need to blow our own horns or wiggle our flabby asses like you do. Problem is, you sound like you never left the ‘diaper’ stage. Grow up!
@BEN COOPER: Thank you Ben for a really common sense response. There are millions of GLBT people out in the world who don’t wear their sexual orientation on their shirt sleeves and actually get out of bed and experience the real world every day. The anti-Weir persona on this comment section obviously live very self-induced closeted lives.
Johnny Weir would be arrested and lashed if he were to visit Uganda or Nigeria. So much for competing.. Maybe they could have a lashing event to close the ceremony should they ever hold the Olympics in these countries.
In any case, he comes across as a silly little thing with an ego the size of the Grand Canyon. I could be wrong but that’s the impression I’m getting.
I recall the struggle of the last 50 years. I object to the quality of many of the comments here because they are hateful and profane and are not constructive. The level of this discourse belittles th gains made in our fight for the rights we are entitled to and have marched for. I would rather show Putin for the animal he is than attack one of our own.
All the comments I have been reading are from a bunch of bitchy queens. Lets see what happens before we start judging this man. I plan on watching Johnny Weir
@jar: My friend, I am not going to continue to talk about Roy Cohn, because it is senseless. However, I was at Roy Cohn’s funeral, as an employee of Town Hall Theatre, where it was held. Mayor Koch was not present, although there were other people that did pay their respects. My comments were meant to be general, but not literal or factual. However, I have also read both biographies on Roy Cohn, and his personal history, is not one to be proud of. By the way, the reason that his funeral was at Town Hall, and not a Jewish Temple, is because no Jewish Temple would allow it to take place there. At Town Hall we had police and tight security, because of bomb threats. That’s how well admired Roy Cohn was. There were less than 100 people, out of a 1500 seat theatre. That is fact.
Hahaha he’s such a loser, never liked him or even cared for him.
@Spike: I spotted that, too. Good point.
Cam to fan-girly blogger: “If you work for him then I get it.” Survey says: BINGO.
Yep, yep and yep. So, has anyone here discovered an absolute cure for HIV/AIDS or the deadliest forms of cancer? No? Ok then, back to work.
GOOD FOR JOHNNY! If there was any common sense within the community, they would see that he does more good to the community by being a gay figure-skater in Sochi than by being a regular gay asking for equality. If only there where more gays in the world who would do anything to achieve their dreams than gays who just want to be part of the hordes and known only for the fact that they’re gays.
“GOOD FOR JOHNNY! If there was any common sense within the community, they would see that he does more good to the community by being a gay figure-skater in Sochi than by being a regular gay asking for equality.
Really? And please pray tell, what good does he do as somebody who wears a Russian Military uniform when he goes on TV to speak out against any repercussions for Russia’s law? He actually provides Russia cover. They can say, “Look, we aren’t bad, this famous gay here supports us.”
As for Weir skating there, um….you do know that he isn’t competing in this Olympics don’t you?
As for your comment “Gays who just want to be known only for the fact that they are gays.” Oh yes, those gays being tortured and killed in Russia, it’s THEIR fault, after all they just want to be known for being gays! Seriously, you little WEir Trolls should at least try to come up with a coherent commentary before you sign on.
@Dakotahgeo: No you weren’t, on your own profile you proudly state you never protested at all, and you don’t have much empathy given you believe [and this on record] that child abuse victims deserve it, you literally used that exact phrase.
my Aunty Brooke recently got yellow Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe just by part-time work from a computer… look at more info http://gg.gg/zbij
@Jawsch: I cannot respond to all so I am starting with you…I have been out for 38 years I know Larry Kramer and I knew Harvey Milk…I have been involved in some form of activism since 1977…I have been beaten by cops, thrown in jail, lost jobs and a myriad of other things which have plagued my life…Johnny Weir is making some very unfortunate and unpopular choices but they are his to make… I don’t agree with him or condone his choices…I wonder what any of you are doing to make a difference…??? At this point all I can say is put up or shut up..@moonwalker_jd: You’re an idiot…What have you done for our community…? Johnny Weir is not that great he only placed fifth and sixth the two times he went to the Olympics…Some of you need to look up the definition and origin of scapegoat cause that’s what we gay folks are…I KNOW WHO I AM, DO YOU..?????
@KDub: Good point. Over the years I’m sure he’s taken a lot of crap for being rather feminine and outrageous. Nelly queers get a lot more abuse than more masculine queers. Ripping him apart is counter productive. Ten years from now it will be easier, in hindsight, to say “we should or shouldn’t” have done one thing or the other.
@2eo: Remember that little talk we had about a month ago? It’s still in effect. However, since you weren’t at my social justice events around the country, you really will never know, will you? Your loss. Sorry you can’t follow me around and prove or disprove your comments. I’ll live. Have a nice day.
@2eo: Remember that little talk we had about a month ago? It’s still in effect. However, since you weren’t at my social justice events around the country, you really will never know, will you? Your loss. Sorry you can’t follow me around and prove or disprove your comments. I’ll live.@iMort: Have a nice day.
@iMort: @KDub: You both are right on the mark! Many are the people that regret the things they’ve said or done after thinking about them and losing friends in the aftermath. I suspect most of the negative commenters here will also suffer that fate, only they won’t realize it or know what to do to undo their damage. It’s their fate in life.
@Cam: Good advice, Cam. You might exercise that same restraint?!
@SteveDenver: You give too much credit more like D-list.
@Dakotahgeo: Actually this is totally different. You are literally on record as saying you believe children are to blame for their own abuse.
@2eo: We’ve discussed this before. Your comments are totally out of order and will no longer be addressed. Your comments do not matter to anyone.
@2eo: Now call him a r*cist.
@DShucking: Heh heh heh, that’s about the only thing I haven’t been called… give it time, lolol.
I see the 2 members of the Johny Weir fan club are still screaming away in here.
Look, if Johnny Weir wants to believe or say something he is welcome to. The PROBLEM is, he isn’t being interviewed for himself, he is being interviewed under the “AS a gay man….” category.
He is speaking out in defense of Russia and by doing so publicly as a gay man he is providing them cover. So scream all you want claiming that disagreeing with him is “Bullying” him, but Weir, by trying to protect Russia from any repercussions for their actions is doing worse than bullying Russian gays, he is negating them, their existence, and their struggle.
@Cam: He is doing no such thing. You just don’t have any respect for anyone who doesn’t do on behalf of the gay community what you feel they should do. He’s an individual first and whatever he identifies with most after that is entirely up to him, not you.
@Cam: You need only look at the low standard DShucking and Dako afford to know what they are worth to our movement, not only homophobia affirming but religion loving apologists.
It’s sad they are afforded equal standing when they are not worthy of equality by their own serious transgressions, and in one persons case very, very serious transgressions, evil ones.
@2eo: Are you ever going to explain why you called me a r*cist or do you actually have the scruples to regret such a stupid comment?
Did anyone else notice DShucking started posting a lot after BJMcFrisky was shown the door?
@2eo: Come on, paranoid twat. Quite hiding and explain yourself.
@Cam: That last sentence to your post was beautifully written.
@Caleb in SC: Agreed, we need more people willing to accept that we are human and deserve to be equal, we need fewer apologists and self loathing religious nutcases in our midst, they are holding us back.
@2eo: It’s internet paranoids who think everyone who calls you out must be the same person under different user names who are actually homophobic religious conservatives in disguise. You’re a blithering hypocrite and a useless tool.
@DShucking: Johnny Weir is gay first when it suits his agenda…@2eo: Now why don’t you girls just agree to disagree and move on…??? I think you both need a nice cup of tea and a time out.
@AuntieChrist: Does the tea have vodka in it?
I don’t give a fig if Johnny Weir wants to go to Russia and compete in the Olympics. The last time I checked, there wasn’t a rule on how to be GLBT. The problem I have with the weasel is that he attacks people who protest or boycott. He has all the right in the world to compete, whether he’s gay, straight or a penguin. I can accept that. But the fact that he can’t accept that people like myself can’t enjoy the Olympics or want to support products that are advertised during the Olympics makes him a weasel. Respect is a two way street Mr. Weir and I will watch the Olympics again when it’s in a less hostile anti-GLBT country. I plan to contact the sponsors and protest and boycott.
@AuntieChrist: That’s the best advice I’ve heard/seen in a long time. It must be a slow day at the asylum. Maybe everyone went on the Walmart bus and left a couple of ’em behind.
@DShucking: “Some” people go paranoid just because people don’t bow to their paranoia. I can assure you that you and SFB BJFrisky have nothing in common, especially in the intellectual realm. Thanks for your sane and sensible comments in this otherwise “queenly” Court!
@KDub: Boyyyyyy, you got THAT right! Thank you!
@Dakotahgeo: I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’ve been entirely sane and sensible.
@DShucking: Heh heh heh, well, we all have our moments :-). For some people, those moments go on and on and on….! Also:
Unfortunately, DShucking, this is usually the modus operandi for those who cannot prove their statements with fact or reference. They hit and run badly, they just don’t use a motor vehicle. Such is the pity. Don’t expect more… you’ll be disappointed.
@Dakotahgeo: See? That was ME who said those things! lol
@Cam: Yes, I’m a homophobe because I called you a queen. Keep displaying your paranoid, inferiority complex for us. It’s not Johnny Weir we should be ashamed of. It’s queens like you.
Thank you, DShucking. Some of these queens remind me of a piece of dog doo-doo in the elite living room at a wedding. Everybody dances ‘around’ it, never cleaning up, hoping to God ‘someone else’ does the necessary duty. Yet, it still stinks!
I’m not sure the word would be ‘ashamed.’ More than likely ‘pity’ and ’embarrassment’… for the self-pitying person.
@DShucking: No sweet pea, but the OJ CRAN does, hope you like Grey Goose. If I want to get mean or I am mean, then you know I am having Gin then Dorothy Parker takes over…At the risk of sounding stupid and sentimental (perhaps more mental.) I do love you all…My Bubbeh who survived the camps, (God rest her.) always said;”It takes all kinds of people to make a world and too few to make it bad.” To me that always meant that we all have a choice to do ill or good. Just saying.
@Cam: Westborough??? Ewwwwww, how elitist! Better you should know that it is the “Westboro” Baptist Church, lolol. Know thine enemy by their correct name. You’re welcome!
@AuntieChrist: Advice taken! P.S. My man’s nickname for me is bubbulah.
@Cam: @Dakotahgeo: OKAY I’m putting my foot down…We are all family here and we do make a good point from time to time…No one is always right and NO ONE has all the answers…If you remove the chaff from the wheat then you can find common ground…I love that metaphor it’s the only thing the bible has to give except swords and plows…Holy mother of us all, take a chill pill.
We just had a full moon are you girls having your cycle..???
@AuntieChrist: LOLOL.. yes, Maaaaaaaaa. You just won the “Queen For A Day” title. Take a bow! ;-)
@Dakotahgeo: Oh and don’t give me that menopause shit cause I know better. LOL WE HAVE TO LAUGH…Life is too fucking short…Take it from a queen who has lived with HIV since 1984 and expected to die every other year until I just gave up and did not give a shit any more.
@AuntieChrist: Ahhhhhhhh, you just made my day, Auntie. (I’ve been sleeping almost constantly for about 5 days, today’s the first day I’ve felt rested up….) I hate this HOT, cold, HOT, cold weather! You are living proof that miracles happen every day. You’re nearing your 30 year Anniversary with that crud… I am soooo glad you’re still with us! Hopefully soon we can talk again! Cheers, Mooommmm! ;-) (K) Dak!
@AuntieChrist: A few years back in the Castro I saw a sticker/flyer campaign saying that AIDS wasn’t real and that AZT was the real enemy. Did you ever hear of that? What on earth do they mean?
@DShucking: I’m not sure sweet pea. I grew up in the Bay Area.. California born. Came out in 1975 in San Francisco. Early on they gave too much meds thinking hit it hard and fast. If you are interested in chatting you may contact me…[email protected] I don’t care what everyone says. I think you are okay..KIDDING :-)
@DShucking: [email protected]
@DShucking: Hope to hear from you :-)
And anyone else who wants to chat with a real person, I am here. I don’t like mean folks but if you want to bring it, be prepared cause I don’t do bullshit.
I personally don’t like Weir. Don’t agree with him. Don’t care for him.
But really he is an irrelevant fool.
My mind is on Russia’s GLBT right now. When I watch video’s of them, and they’re so meek yet so brave at the same time to go out and protest when they know they will be met with violence. I wish there was something more we could do for them, and I fear what will happen to them after the Olympic circus. Not just them, but GLBT everywhere – Nigeria, the Middle East, even here at home.
Here’s hoping we’ll see some miracles in 2014.
Siiiiiiigh, well I suppose if our Auntie is telling us to then we have to listen. But I’m going to tell Mom. ;)
We all would love it if Weir or any athlete stood up and denounced the Russian laws plus those of all other countries that treat gays as animals deserving to be slaughtered. But, except for skater Ashley Wagner, none have stepped forward. I don’t see anyone on this board attacking the hundreds. of other Olympians who gave been silent about Russia.
Weir’s perception of Russia is clouded by his obsession of the country. That will never change. But attacking Weir does not help the situation in Russia or other countries.
@modernfamilyfan: Thank you, mff! An orange will not turn into an apple even if one asks it politely!
I have a sick feeling that someone is going to be killed at the upcoming Olympics.
@AuntieChrist: Just an after thought: Auntie Christie is 100% gen-u-ine! We’ve had many good talks and I find him enlightening and challenging in the world of debate! Thanks for being in my life, AC, even though we may not always agree! Kudos! Da Dak!
@Cam: Dude, I’m just going to tell you something you kids aren’t learning in school: Know your enemy. I APPLAUSE the fact that this guy has the balls to wear a russian military uniform and say to the world “I’m not going to stigmatize these guys, I’ll rather try to understand them.” It’s sad, very sad, what kids in Russia, America and anywhere elsewhere are suffering. But I don’t think being confrontative and aggressive about an issue will make it any better. And this guy Weir is exactly doing that: Waving the flag of peace, in hope of a dialogue.
@moonwalker_jd: Wow! You made a very succinct, salient point regarding this whole situation. Sounds to me like you’ve been around the block, human relations-wise, a number of times. I’m counting the seconds before we hear from Mr. Victim… 5, 4, 3, 2…. Thank you!
@moonwalker_jd: You said: Waving the flag of peace, in hope of a dialogue.
Just make sure it’s not a rainbow flag cause in Russia you go to jail and more than likely a beating goes with it.
