“I’m sorry, I just find this the most astonishing thing I’ve ever been involved in on television.”
That’s gay Guardian journalist Owen Jones, shortly before storming off the set of a live Sky News broadcast on Sunday night, leaving presenters Mark Longhurst and Julie Hartly-Brewer in the dust.

Jones became increasingly agitated as both presenters insisted on downplaying the all-too clear connection between homosexuality and the Orlando attacks that left 50 people dead and another 53 wounded.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
In the below clip, things come to a head after Longhurst interrupts Jones just as he’s emphasizing the fact that Omar Mateen was specifically targeting gay people in his attack, prompted by his disgust at seeing two men kissing.
Related: Can The Anti-Gay Right Ever Acknowledge The Human Toll Of Homophobia?
Longhurst makes a vain attempt to soften the discourse by claiming the victims were “human beings” who were simply “trying to enjoy themselves, whatever their sexuality.”
That’s when Jones finally loses his patience:
I’m sorry, I just find this the most astonishing thing I’ve ever been involved in on television. If [Mateed had] walked into a synagogue and massacred dozens of Jewish people, you wouldn’t be saying what you’re saying now.
You would be talking about it as an anti-semitic attack. This was a deliberate attack on LGBT people.”
Hartley-Brewer, ineptly doing her best to gloss over the palpable tension, says Mateen could have just as easily attacked her, “a gobby woman,” and after that point, Jones proves unwilling to speak further.
After visibly fuming for several minutes as the presenters ramble on inanely, Jones unceremoniously untangles the microphone from his shirt and storms off the set, saying, “I’ve had enough of this, I’m going home,”
Hartley-Brewer is chagrined and chiding: “Everyone’s upset and angry about this, but storming off a TV set…”
Then he’s gone.
It’s utterly maddening to watch:
This morning, Owen discusses his motivations in a Guardian column entitled “On Sky News last night, I realized how far some will go to ignore homophobia”:
I am reluctant to dwell too much on my appearance on Sky News last night, because this isn’t about me, so let’s just use it as a case study. In sum, I walked off in disgust during a discussion about the massacre: it was an instinctive reaction to an unpleasant and untenable situation. The presenter continually and repeatedly refused to accept that this was an attack on LGBT people. This was an attack “against human beings”, he said, and “the freedom of all people to try to enjoy themselves”. He not only refused to accept it as an attack on LGBT people, but was increasingly agitated that I – as a gay man – would claim it as such.”
….
Today, the “we only care about LGBT rights if Muslims are involved” brigade are out in force. As a gay man, I am proud to live in a city represented by a Muslim mayor who has faced death threats for supporting and voting for LGBT people to have the same rights as everybody else. The bigots must not be allowed to hijack this atrocity.”

It seems like everyone was going off half cocked in that situation including Owen Jones. It was not handled well by any of them and whatever program that was didn’t come across as a very credible news source by any means. It sounded much more like sensationalist journalism delivered by a bunch of conflicting egos.

This news program is a piece of SH*T. The presenters are complete idiots.

Well I knew this would be happening. The bigots can’t acknowledge the shooter’s homophobia and bias against gays without also acknowledging their own feelings about gays. It must be quite uncomfortable having that little voice whispering “hypocrite” in their ear.
Some have already started arguing that being opposed to same sex marriage or bathroom rights for trans people is just expressing their personal beliefs and that they aren’t bigots because they don’t kill gays like the shooter did. They think denying equal rights to LGBT people is still ok. They still think that it is ok to teach their children and religious congregations that homosexuality is wrong and a sin, while encouraging more bigotry in the process.
I don’t think many people will ever be ready to dig deep enough to expose the roots of bigotry and bias against LGBT people. Not even when massacres like the one in Orlando happen. It would force them to confront the systemic learned hatred of LGBT that is still allowed to exist.

Fox News and tutti quanti played a part but the Qoran is the main responsible. The terrorist was Muslim for that matter.

I get it – his frustration was obvious and understandable. Think he over-reacted? How about the baby temper tantrums repeatedly exhibited by the male candidate for President of the U.S.? At least Jones had a valid reason for his actions. Good for him.
MyDadPulledOut
Jones better get with the program if he wants to keep his job. Sure, it’s fine for me to come anonymously and educate my ignorant but adorable gay people, but in public, you got to follow the narrative. They especially serious about this in the UK, where, they completely refuse to report sharp increase in violence against gays by “refugees”

“Gobby”? I never even heard the word before so I had to look it up.
It means “loudmouthed and offensive.” And sometimes, “fat.” LOL.

Jones would have been more effective if he had stayed on the show and argued the point over & over and accused the interviews of bias and homophobia. He should have told them, to their face in no uncertain terms that they were idiots and were enabling future incidents of this kind.
If it looks like shit, and smells like shit – chances are it IS shit.

Homosexual is a technical, clinical term in my eyes and sounds insulting when I hear it used outside of a scientific backdrop. It’s like calling black people or African Americans negroid. Call us what we want to be called. It’s LGBT not LHBT. Alot of people don’t know what homophobia means but gay phobia they would
billbennett42
Hooray for Owen. Thank you on behalf of so many of us LGBTQ members in Boston MA who appreciate your wisdom. Wouldn’t it be nice it the news people spent more time and energy on your thoughts….than that of the homophobic “I love the GAYS”, Trump!
Alistair Wiseman
What a child. He must have run off to his safe space. Poor liberal. 🙁
America has to make a choice. Does it want gay rights, women’s emancipation and tolerance for people of all nonviolent faiths – or does it want Islam?
Liberals, the problem with putting Muslims at the top of your victimhood hierarchy is that THEY WANT TO KILL EVERYONE ON THE LIST.
Sorry gays, the Democratic left has made a choice and they have chosen Islam.

Well done Owen Jones! This has moved the earth. You didn’t just get to homophobes berate Owen, they did it in a way that downgraded gay rights. As if those rights didn’t matter. This has eclipsed every other story in the UK. I was stunned watching the host and that horses arse Juliet Hartley Brewer on this
Owen did well to get offended, and even better walking off
Pistolo
This needs much more coverage because this kid is one of the only people out there who is truly getting to heart of the HYPOCRISY of our politicians, of our media, and our constituency. Politicians using the blood of victims to fuel their agendas, to bolster Islamaphobia in the US, to protect their sacred arms – the establishments behind the media, the politicians, and heck even a huge portion of the population who oh-so-generously allowed themselves to be forced to accept us in the smallest way through the institution of marriage- all those people should be run out of town wherever they go. How dare they appropriate this and strip it of the LGBTQ, how dare they act like their religions aren’t hateful too, how dare they act like they haven’t sat idly by while gay people were massacred and discriminated against before.
Alistair Wiseman
@broadshoulder:
“This has moved the earth.” Really? How?
How is it “better” that he walked off? To show that a man of the gay left is incapable of engaging in civil discourse? That unless the left does not control and dominate what should be an open and honest discussion, they have to be big drama queens and run for their safe spaces because of a a perceived microaggression?
Sadly, typical leftist. Typical gay.
DCguy
@Alistair Wiseman: What a shick, the self hating homophobic guy who supports every anti-gay candidate out there attacks the gay guy.
DCguy
One thing that the reports on this have missed.
SKY News in Bruton is owned by Rupert Murdoch, the same guy who owns FOX News here.
His homophobia is apparent in all of his networks, and the comentators are toeing the anti-gay line at SKY News, just like they do at FIX.
Alistair Wiseman
@DCguy:
Is that all you’ve got? A weak attempt at an empty insult and boogeyman Rupert Murdoch nonsense?
Come on, you can do better than that. At least try. Start by watching the clip.
