Just The Facts.

Harnessing the gay marriage mood, Reuters put together a “fact box” on presumptive presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama’s gay marriage policies. Spoiler alert! They’re basically the same! [Reuters]

But it’s not true. McCain is supporting the anti-marriage forces in California. McCain would also appoint conservatives to the Supreme Court.

Obama supported the California marriage decision, and has said that he supports Civil Unions with the same rights and benefits of marriage. The Republicans used gay marriage as lighting rod in 2004, and Obama is trying to avoid that this year.

Think back to 2004 when the Republicans blanketed the Bible Belt with postcards to scare the masses with fear. The result was anti-gay marriage initiatives around the country and bigots hitting the voting booths en masse.

Marriage is great but I’ll take ENDA first. Ending discrimination in employment and housing will have greater benefit for more in the GLBT community than marriage.

What Noah said.

They’re not the same views at all. McCain does not support civil unions, he supports the rights of states to ban them. There’s a huge difference in their philosophies.

Also, I realize that the California ruling is a huge deal, but for the rest of the country, there are much more important LGBT issues than marriage. Why is marriage a government regulated institution in the first place? Shouldn’t citizens be treated always as equal individuals under the eyes of the law?

I would also like to see an inclusive ENDA, like the one supported by Obama when he was a state congressman in Illinois. I wish people would stop taking such a narrow view of LGBT rights, stop trying to make marriage THE issue when there are several others that are just as important. McCain doesn’t support ending DADT; Obama does. McCain doesn’t support repealing DOMA; Obama does. Why is there even a question as to who has the better civil rights policies?

How spectacularly uninformed of you, Queerty. McCain does not support civil unions at all, Obama does. That’s a pretty major difference, I think.

Both candidates have secured their parties nomination and probably the majority of their members. Now they are moving toward the middle. It’s what makes US politics so worthless. They either have to lie to get their foot in the door, or lie to get broad enough support. None of them can get elected on genuine merit. On the bright side an ability to accommodate other views, diplomatically negotiate and broker resolutions are skills they need to demonstrate before we elect them.

Rikard,

The center has moved way Left since 2004! The Republicans are losing elections after elections in Congress. Americans want universal health care. A few months ago it was called socialized medicine to inject a little Red fear. Funny, no one calls police or fire departments social services.

You have to vote or run for office to get things to chan.
