If you thought there’d be less frisson between Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper now that the Silver Fox has come out, you’d be wrong. The two once again co-hosted CNN’s live New Year’s Eve coverage Monday night but, instead of dropping F-bombs or stripping down, Griffin tried to go down on the Coop.
According to the New York Daily News, after a correspondent discussed a Maine New Year’s custom that involved kissing a giant sardine, Griffin crouched down and tried to kiss Cooper’s groin.
“Did you drop something,” he asked.
“No, I was kissing your sardine,” she answered.
This or Ryan Seacrest? We’re not looking forward to New Year’s Eve 2013.

It’s actually embarassing and painful to watch Kathy Griffin try so hard to be funny on national TV and fail so miserably. The entire comedy premise of these two together seems to be: let’s watch the gay guy giggle uncomfortably at the suggestive “jokes” of a pushy, raunchy, loud-mouth bimbo. Zero chemistry and zero laughs.

Cooper looked so uncomfortable. Unedifying. Both should bail out of next year’s celebration. Cooper was being very forgiving and kind. Sometimes that is not the right thing to do. Apologies are in order from Ms. Griffin.

So desperate to be shocking she, she went there, was shocking but not at all funny, nor entertaining. CNN won’t have her back next year. Anderson will no doubt move on as well.

Wow. I totally disagree. My friends and I watched the show and could not stop laughing. They are a great pair – he is totally charming and she is fully in touch with her “id”. It was comedy improv live and without a net. I was surprised that in a few places CNN turned off the sound. I’d love to know what they said. Also, I was surprised that Kathy did not riff on Anderson’s coming out this year.
Would definitely watch next year. Hilarious.

Firstly, Kathy is a Saint, Goddamnit! Yes, it was cringe-worthy, but hilarious. She is under tremendous pressure to keep the show fresh and has to be over-the-top, which is supposed to play against Anderson’s more dry (i.e., stiff) style. It’s the best New Year’s Eve show out there. She also acknowledged on air that the producers wanted “counter-programming”. Why anyone in the gay community would want to hate on Kathy is beyond me.

I’ve seen him do this schtick elsewhere since he came out. When the hets get raunchy, he giggles and tries to change the subject, all the while letting on that he gets the joke.
When she first knelt down, he said ‘did you drop something?’ When she mentions his sack, he says ‘sack of Christmas presents?’
This is classic comedy straight man, all the better since he’s not straight at all.

I think Kathy wants Anderson, and uses jokes to cover it up, I don’t think she minds that he’s gay. I think if he ever said the word she would be on his dick in 3 seconds

Uh, she’s done this event with him six years and she lives for shocking people, so why is anyone really that shocked by her doing this or saying that it was ‘her show’. It’s all part of her shtick. Besides, once he started to squirm she would naturally stick with it because for her, it was working and she wanted to make a scene. She knows what her fans expect and I thought it was funny, especially how Anderson handled himself during the whole thing.
