Just one day after NFL draft prospect Michael Sam made us all proud by publicly coming out, Kent State wrestler Sam Wheeler took to Twitter to offer his poetic commentary.
“I can’t even watch Sports Center today cause all they are talking about is Marcus Smart [sic] or that fag from Mizzou…”, he tweeted, following up with this little gem later — “O geez I got all these fag boys mad at me now.”
Wheeler’s comments have landed him in hot water with school officials, earning him a suspension from competing. You have to wonder if he feels like it was worth it to get his uninspired hate speech into the Twitterverse.
His coach had this to say: “I was surprised and offended by what I read on Twitter. I have spoken to Sam personally, and while he is remorseful, he will be suspended indefinitely while we determine the best course of action moving forward.”

I feel like this is the only way to get the message across to bigots in sports. Punishment might be the only thing their primitive brains can understand. And it’s a clear way for the people in charge to not just say that they mean business but show that discrimination is unacceptable.

It is interesting that every single time that Kent State makes national news it is because of something really wrong that occurred. The university has a track record of being on the wrong side of civil rights. At least no one was gunned down this time.

@scoobydube: Yes, he has a “free speech” right to say whatever stupid, hateful things he wants to, and we have a “free speech” right to respond, correct, criticize and attack him verbally as long as we don’t make any threats. That’s how Free Speech works. And, by the way, free speech rights apply to government censorship; they don’t prevent a private institution from making its own policies and disciplining those who violate them. (e.g. you have a free speech right to publicly express your racism without legal repercussions, but your boss has the right to fire you for expressing it in your workplace)
