Israel beat America’s Dancing With The Stars to featuring a same-sex couple, but next season could be our year! And you might find yourself rooting for a one Portia DeGeneres.
The actress, currently on a media tour about eating disorders (oh, and her book Unbearable Lightness), hinted on Ryan Seacrest‘s radio show that she’s been approached by DWTS producers about appearing on the reality competition. With a lady!
The show is “planning to feature a same-sex couple. You’re at the top of the list,” said Ryan, to which Portia responded, “Goodness, you really do break news. … I’m not gonna pass, let me think about it. I used to be a ballet dancer, it’s not completely a pass. You never know.”
Apparently it took two years for the U.S. DWTS to come around on same-sex pairings: Back in 2008, judge Cheryl Burke said, “I don’t think America is ready to watch two men dancing.” Which might still be true: Producers could be looking only for two women — easier for straight male audiences, or whatever — to ease into things.

First, Lance Bass is a total dumbass, imo. What self respecting gay man says seeing to people of the same sex is silly? Like wtf?
Second, I watched the the two women’s dance this week and thought it was quite romantic. And Queerty had that clip of those two men dancing together on some program (I can’t recall which) a while ago and it was fantastic. There’s no reason two women or two men can’t look good dancing together.

The vast majority of people who watch this kind of voyeuristic television are too fat/lazy/stupid/imagination-less/adventure-less to go out and learn how to dance on their own so they just live vicariously through someone who actually is. Have you watched these shows? The “talent” is a vapid as they come. Its just an opportunity for people w/ very low IQs to have something to do when they get home from their jobs and something to talk about when they go back to their job the next day.

If they choose two women instead of two men, it would be yet another surrender to the homophobic double standard. Women dance together all the time – it’s nothing new. You only have to go to any mainstream nightclub.
Dancing With The Stars appears to be chickening out of showing the real deal – ie two men dancing together. Don’t fall for it. Keep up the pressure on DWTS producers.
As for Portia, I’m sort of getting sick of her. Portia, darling, you and Ellen do not represent me as a gay man nor do you represent gay men in general. You’ve had a charmed ride. Lance Bass appears to be the straight liberals’ best friend. Sort of like an accessory hand-bag that you drag about to prove to your other straight friends how “open-minded” you are. Lance Bass, stayed in the closet WAAAAY after his career was over. He was outed because Perez Hilton outed him by continuing to show pictures of he and his boyfriend together, so then Lance started having female friends stand in between he and his boyfriend when they went out so the blogs started showing pictures of them wearing each others clothes. So FINALLY Lance is out….
