So, by now you’ve probably seen that stressful video of an actress from Orange is the New Black confronting an annoying subway preacher. If you’re like us, you may have thought, “oh God, why is this happening.” Well, now Lea Delaria has come forward to explain herself.
Apparently, she was heading home to Queens when the guy’s use of the word “homos” spurred her to action. She doesn’t normally confront crazy people on the subway — a sensible policy — but this guy was just too much.
According to Delaria, there were approximately 20 people recording the exchange on their cellphones, so hopefully more videos will surface soon and we’ll get to see an elaborate multi-camera presentation of the incident. After the guy left, everyone applauded.
“You must always face evil and take it down,” she told Page Six, which is itself evil. “The reason evil thrives in the world, the reason hatred thrives in the world, the reason bullying thrives in the world is because of complacency. As long as we continue to take it, it will continue to thrive.”
How about we take this to the next level?

I’m glad she stood up to him, and kept it classy. He lost it and showed what a hypocrite he is and lost credibility albet, even among some Christians, when he called her a dyke. Thank god she repeated what he called her, and it’s on tape for all the world to see/ hear.So people would know to ignor this false prophet…

pretty sure i’ve seen him on the D train headed to work..the only reason I don’t say anything is because this happens ALLLLLL the time.. It’s new york, people have their opinions and then you get off the train and start your day, that’s how it goes.

I find it amusing that New Yorkers pride themselves on living in a modern, progressive city, with a much more enlightened population than the Midwest or those rubes in red states, yet it appears that New Yorkers are confronted with homophobic bullies more frequently than the rest of us. Just another reason not to live in that overrated cesspool of a city.

How long do you think a KKK or neo-nazi spokesman would be tolerated loudly spewing hate in a NYC subway car? But a loud Caribbean immigrant espousing anti-gay hate and actually referring to an American woman as a “dyke” is considered part of normal everyday life in NY. Maybe we haven’t come as far as we think.

@Kieran: Good point. It’s still the last socially acceptable group to abuse. That’s only because we’ve allowed it. Like she said about complacency.
The KKK knows better then to go onto a D train and do that. They’d get their asses kicked.
