Has Leah Daughtry Been Up To No Good?

Democratic National Committee Chief of Staff Leah Daughtry may not have been entirely honest with Washington DC.

The New York-born Pentecostal minister turned politico allegedly exploited DC's property tax exemptions. That's not a scandal, of course. Countless citizens use the Homestead Deduction to cut their tax rates nearly in half. The district's law states, however, that to take advantage of the deduction, you must vote in DC. Some say Daughtry didn't get the memo, because she's been registered to vote in New York City since February 21, 1996. The original deduction law said nothing about voting in DC, but lawmakers changed the rule back in 2002.

If this story sounds familiar, it should: Bush henchman Karl Rove played the same game back in 2005 until the Washington Post exposed his illegal exploitation.

One would think that an insider such as Daughtry would have noted Rove's outing, but the DNC staffer must have been distracted – she's voted in New York four times since the new law went into effect. Daughtry's property is currently valued at $239,250. That price doesn't include the land, which boosts the total to $341,780.

Daughtry isn't alone, either. As The Washington Blade reported, Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council chair Claire Lucas also stands accused of manipulating DC's laws to her financial advantage.

Ms. Daughtry did not reply to our comment inquiries by press time. We'll definitely let you know if and when she offers a statement. In the meantime, you can pour over all the evidence, which we've included below.

Update: The DNC just sent over this statement. They claim Daughtry had no knowledge of the deduction:

Rev. Daughtry has made clear that her legal residence is in New York, that she did not believe she was entitled to the Homestead Deduction, and that her accountant is correcting the error. Once again, while the DNC has consistently refused to comment on this case out of respect for the legal process and to protect the interests of everyone involved, the plaintiffs continue to use dishonest and increasingly desperate smear tactics to try their case outside the courtroom.

We wonder if she'll be paying DC the money she owes…

Ms. Lucas has not manipulated any District of Columbia law to her financial advantage.  Ms. Lucas has told and will continue to tell the truth to the Court.  Ms. Lucas is a witness, not a defendant in this lawsuit. And all of the issues in Hitchcock v. DNC will be litigated in Superior Court and decided by a fair and impartial tribunal.

When Leah Daughtry does prison time, I guess she does not have to worry about Bertha (the female equivalent of Bubba) as she IS Bertha. Pentacosts are cultish who attract dishelved people with a chemical imbalance of the brains which draw them toward extremist views of religion and reactionary fear to politics (which is usually the Republican base) These are signs of Paranoid Schizophrenia and/or Bipolar states before the complete meltdown with Homophobia, Anti-Semitism and Racism as the hallmarks of fear (choose your poison) until their views spiral out of control and those around them discount their increasingly hateful tones. One in three Americans are estimated to suffer mental illness with no help from (Second Worst President Ever) Ronald Reagan who turfed out the mentally ill to become a sea of homelessness until they final snap in society.

She is a criminal who should be up on charge for perjury . She feels that because she is a loud mouth woman of colour that she can get away with whatever she wants. This is not right and I hope that she gets what she deserves. We women of color need to walk the straight line (even if we are not straight) just like anyone else. SHAME on her.

The Homestead Exemption in DC, does not cut your property taxes in half or anywhere near that, it's a pretty pathetic exemption….look it up..it reduces the taxable amount by a whopping $64,000…you can't get a decent house for less than $500,000K in DC…my 1 bedroom is $899K…

I can't believe some of the hurtful and ignorant comments posted about this woman. Whether or not any laws were knowingly violated, these personal comments are simply immature and down right childish. What's even more distressing is that these comments are being posted from members of a community that advocate fairness for all and wish not to have judgement passed on them. As a member of that community, and in the words of DCGOVLADY, SHAME ON YOU!

Thanks, DCGayDem, for bringing some class and sensitivity to these comments. I hope most of the readers of Queerty (unlike some of those commenting here) can look at these developments with a critical eye instead of believing everything they read.

The third line put up a red flag for me, "Pentacostal Minister". Not saying this girlfriend is guilty of misdeeds or anything, but the history of fundamental Christian leaders dipping in the till ain't too good. Ya know what I am saying.

Unfortunately the loudest Pentacostal ministers are very vocal in their LGBT hate. However Dougherty is not one of them. I have met her on numerous occassions and she is a solid friend to the LGBT community.

I find it curious that the original complaint was that Donald Hitchcock, who was employed by the DNC to raise money from the gay community, was fired when his husband told the very donors Donald raises money from to stop giving to the DNC. There is an inherent conflict of interest there and Yandura's action made it difficult if not impossible for Hitchcock to perform the job he was being paid to do. Now in court people who are merely witnesses such as Lucas are having their personal life investigated and subject to attack. If this is about establishing the credibility of a witness, remember that Yandura and Hitchcock subpoenaed Lucas. If they thought she was a fraudulent con-artist why force her to appear as a witness. Still I wish SOMEONE would ask if the Yandura + Scott consulting firms really did have a 6 figure contract with the DNC that Dean eliminated with all other standing contracts with beltway consultants so he could instead give the money directly to the state parties as part of his 50 state plan.

First off I must say that this is simply sad. While I understand that folks are valued to their opinion, I agree completely with David and DC LadyGov this is not about Leah's personal life. I would honestly ask the question how many of you all have had the honor of spending time with Leah, who gotten to know the person who she is. Seen the advise which she has offered to many black, white, brown, gay or not, in the closet or out. Leah has helped many of young folks who have come through the Democratic National Committee over the years who she has not had to help.

On the same token her personal opinions on the lifestyles of the GLBT community has nothing to do with her work ethic or the way she runs a shop, I have seen her work with individuals from all backgrounds and lead with an excellence that is second to none. If this issue is about a person getting fired from the DNC then so be it, but the point in which you all continue to bash this woman, shows that you are not more than what you are calling her. You honestly don't believe in open acceptance because you are attacking her for what you perceive as a difference in opinion.

She has the DNC by the balls. You think firing a gay man at the DNC created a big stir. Just try to fire a black woman if you want to see all hell break loose.
