Lesbian Tennis Pros Martina Navratilova And Billie Jean King Return Margaret Court’s Anti-Gay Serve

Our Douchette of the Week last week, Margaret Court called same-sex unions dysfunctional, unhealthy and unnatural. Now, two lesbian tennis pros have called Court out for the small-minded thumper she is.

World tennis champion Martina Navratilova said:

“Seems to me a lot of people have evolved as has the Bible, unfortunately Margaret Court has not. Her myopic view is truly frightening as well as damaging to the thousands of children already living in same gender families… I have tried to talk to Margaret, but to say she’s completely close-minded on the issue is an understatement.”

Then King added:

I respectfully disagree with Margaret’s position on gay marriage. We have to commit to eliminating homophobia because everyone is entitled to the same rights, opportunities and protection.

Dang. While not quite as spicy as we would have liked, tennis has always retained some elegance and grace. Perhaps calmly calling Court out on her outdated views will influence a lot more people to reconsider her stance than would a backhanded ball hurtled 70 miles per hour into her face—such unladylike conduct would just disappoint.

Same-sex unions are “dysfunctional, unhealthy and unnatural”?
How would she know this, unless she’s taken part in one?

I played competitive tennis throughout high school and college and even participated in th early Gay Games, and my basic reaction to this is “Margaret … who?” Court’s star faded so long ago that it’s hard to imagine anybody caring about her opinion, one way or another. She is, as so many of her generation, a dinosaur on gay issues.

The Bible didn’t evolve. It just got an addition, like a condo.

Where’s John McEnroe when we need him? He’d tell Margaret to go stuff her tennis racket where the sun don’t shine.
