He is a genuinely nice man. My nephew, 8 at the time, went to see Ian in some theatrical production, and afterwards queued up outside the theatre doors to get his autograph. Ian McKellan came out, even though obviously tired, and said hello to everyone, and took time to sign all the autographs needed.
He also sent a personally signed photo and accompanying letter to my 8 year old nephew answering all the kid’s questions.

I’ve always really admired Ian McKellan. I honestly didn’t even know he was gay until last year. Weird, huh?
