Rufus Wainwright, “Out of the Game”

He’s done opera, he’s done cabaret, he’s even done Judy. But with producer Mark Ronson on board for his upcoming seventh album, Out of the Game, Rufus Wainwright promises something a little different. The out troubadour has been telling music journos that the album is his most radio-friendly to date, while Ronson has compared it to the sort of pop that was coming out of Laurel Canyon in the ’70s. And the album’s first single, the title track “Out of the Game,” definitely has that sexy soft-rock sound. There will of course be inevitable comparisons to Elton John, but those lo-fi drums and whiny guitars sound a lot like Rumours to me. Me Decade California pop at its best—even if Out of the Game was recorded in Brooklyn.

Uh Huh Her, “Wake to Sleep”

Uh Huh Her really don’t get the credit they deserve. Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey make some of the prettiest electro pop out there, and their latest single, “Wake to Sleep,” from last year’s Nocturnes, is no exception. It’s the kind of music that just seems like it should sparkle in the dark. But flash and sparkle aren’t all there is to Uh Huh Her:  There’s also a sense of maturity that you don’t usually get with pretty pretty pop songs. It’s music for grown-ups who still remember wearing body glitter.

Dragonette, “The Right Woman”

The Diane von Furstenberg-produced compilation Proud to be Woman Vol. 3, which benefits the women’s empowerment nonprofit Vital Voices, is out this week. And the indisputable standout has to be “The Right Woman” from Canadian electro band Dragonette’s. It’s a fabulous, house-tinged track that’s sure to set dance floors on fire.

Scott Matthew, “Sinking”

Switching gears from electro pop to contemplative folk, singer-songwriter Scott Matthew of Shortbus fame is celebrating the release of his latest CD, Gallantry’s Favorite Son, with a free download and live video of his new single, “Sinking.”

The clip was recorded last summer in Berlin, and features a slightly more pared down version of the song, which Matthew calls his favorite on the new album. Download the album version for a little extra gospel backing-vocal action.
