I wonder why no-one asks why the straights don't simply mind their own business? Our relationships have no effect and nothing to do with their own.

Mike,

You said: "Most Californians disagree [with same-sex marriage]."

Considering the fact that three different polls (Field, Gallup, and Suvey USA) have Proposition 8 going down in defeat by a margin of 51-55% to 41-44%, one has to wonder what possible reason you might have to distort the facts in such a way? To drum up support for writing discirmination into the constitution? To prove the talking point that Republicans' bigotry and intolerance reflect "the will of the people"?

I see. So, your being "right" is more important than other peoples' rights. I don't think you're self-loathing. I think you're a greedy little jerk. Come to think of it, given your values, it sounds like you've joined the perfect political party.

We could dance around the issue of LGBT support among Dems + Reps, speaking in general terms about their non-support of "gay marriage" but the bottom-line is this: McCain/Palin are against (or just mildy "tolerant" of) key LGBT rights that Obama/Biden are clearly for. McCain is obviously opposed to + intolerant of the idea of legally recognizing same-sex relationships, rights to adopt, etc. Even if you wanted to argue that Obama wouldn't actively do anything for LGBTs once in office, I'd wager my left nut that he wouldn't stand in the way of our rights (which you know full well that McCain/Palin would do).

Given that, I can't fathom how anyone could justify casting a vote for McCain as an aware LGBT individual (actually, I have my suspicions but don't want to make generalizations about Repubs being focused on their bottom line). Obama's record isn't squeaky-clean, either, but he'd clearly be a damn sight better as president than helping Johnny Mac + Sarah "Golly Gee" Palin slink into office. Talk about the lesser of two evils, especially (but not exclusively) where LGBT citizens are concerned. If McCain/Palin somehow do manage to end up in the top spots, though, heaven help us all.

As far as the Democrats and Republicans go, if you believe their view of gays are that different, you're living in a cave.

"Despite San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's threat that we all have to accept gay marriage whether we "like it or not," most Californians disagree. And, importantly, vice presidential candidates Joe Biden and Sarah Palin declared last night during the debate that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

[PBS Reporter Gwen] IFILL: Let's try to avoid nuance, Senator. Do you support gay marriage?

[Senator Joe] BIDEN: No. Barack Obama nor I support redefining from a civil side what constitutes marriage. We do not support that. That is basically the decision to be able to be able to be left to faiths and people who practice their faiths the determination what you call it...

[Governor Sarah] PALIN: Your question to [Biden] was whether he supported gay marriage and my answer is the same as his and it is that I do not.

IFILL: Wonderful. You agree...
Transcript of Vice Presidential debate, October 2, 2008
(http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/02/debate.transcript/)

Senator Biden adds his name to a long list of leading national Democrats who oppose gay marriage:

• As Senator Biden indicated during the debate, Senator Barack Obama opposes same sex marriage and says that marriage should be between a man and woman. (Los Angeles Times, September 26, 2008)

"I personally believe that marriage is between a man and a woman..."
Barack Obama Senate Press Release, June 7, 2006

• Former President Bill Clinton has long opposed same-sex marriage. He signed the Federal Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, which made the definition of marriage in federal law as between one man and one woman. (CNN "Inside Politics", May 23, 1996; The Hotline, May 14, 1996; Newsday May 14, 1996; Public Law 104-199)

• Senator Hillary Clinton does not support same-sex marriage (ABC News, October 27, 2006).

• Former Vice President Al Gore opposed same-sex marriage during his 2000 campaign for President.

The vice president "supports domestic partnerships, (but) we don't think they should be put in the same category as traditional marriages," said Gore spokesman Chris Lehane.
San Francisco Chronicle, December 20, 1999"

Do I know any hetero men or women with HIV personally? Yes, actually. I don't, however, personally have any gay/bi friends or family with HIV. Not to my knowledge, that is.

Anyway, I'm not an "apologist" for anyone or anything. I do take offense when people make sweeping derogatory generalizations about gays, though, even when (especially, maybe) the offenders are other gays.

Some of the things you said were a little shaky but I'm not really interested in a drawn-out debate. If you're not a stereotype, great. My point wasn't that one should be ashamed of not being a stereotype, just that the way you expressed yourself could have rubbed some of us the wrong way. It is what it is. You wondered why you were seen as creepy + I answered with my own perception of your comments.

All in all, though, it's not my place to tell you how to "be gay" + I don't have any desire to do so. Do your thing; I'll certainly do mine (w/o any "apologies").

Fredo, I am proud that I'm not a stereotype, and it's a known fact that more gay men are promiscuous than straight men. We can't deny in the US how many of our community have HIV or have died of AIDS. And recent studies have shown alarming rates of syphillis in the gay community, and new cases among young gay men in NYC. My partner works in the medical field and sees all of this first hand. Do you know any straight men or women in the US who have HIV? I don't.

Gays have every right to be promiscuous, but I can tell you they do not get respect. That is a fact and apologists like yourself can deny it all you want. They are made fun of, and it's hypocritical because most straight men who are promiscuous get a standing ovation for being playboys.

I am very open and upfront about my sexuality, and when I tell people I am gay they do laugh and they do think I'm joking. It's just the way it is. If people find me creepy or irksome, so be it. I'm not hiding in a closet.

People probably think you're a creep, Mike, because by trotting out every run-of-the-mill anti-gay stereotype to prove how unlike that you are, it almost comes across as though you feel the average gay person is one of those promiscuous, not-worthy-of-respect caricatures. It could just be a matter of misperception but that is how your comments came across to me. Also, it seems as though you are a bit pleased with yourself for being perceived as "not possibly gay", which is understandably irksome.

Marc, I'm not perfect, but my life is going along nicely at this point. I've had rough times in the past and I'm sure I'll have some in the future. What are you like 18?

Richard, why am I a creep? I'm monogamous, a Republican, and not a gay stereotype. Am I a creep because I don't go hooking up in bathrooms and bathhouses? People actually respect me, and when they complain about George Michael's latest arrest in a bathroom, I tell them we're not all like that. If you think something's wrong with that, then you have probs.

Chris, I appreciate what you said even though you don't agree, although I'm at a loss for words as to why I'm facing such hostility from people on here. Yes, I am enjoying my life but it appears people are jealous of that.

She was brilliant!

Go now,
Dont look back we've drawn the line,
Move on,
Its no good to go back in time,
I'll never find another girl like you,
For happy endings it takes two,
With fire and ice,
A dream won't come true

(Chorus)

Sarah, Sarah,
Storms are brewing in your eyes,
Sarah,Sarah,
No time is a good time for goodbye

Danger,
In the game when the stakes are high,
Brandid,
A heart was brandid while my senses stood by,
I'll never find another girl like you,
For happy endings it takes two,
With fire and ice,
A dream won't come true

(Chorus)

Sarah,Sarah,
Storms are brewing in you eyes,
Sarah,Sarah,
No time is a good time for goodbye

Love me like no one has ever loved me before,
Hurt me.. no one could ever hurt me more,
Sarah,
Nobody loved me more,

I'll never find another girl like you,
With fire and ice,
A dream won't come true

(Chorus)

Sarah,Sarah,
No time is a good time,
Oh Sarah,Sarah,
Storms are brewing in your eyes,
Sarah,Sarah,
No time is a good time for goodbye

Sarah,Sarah,
Storms...are brewing in you eyes,
Sarah,Sarah,
No time is a good time

OOOOO Sarah

If scientists want to spend money looking for a gay gene, let them. It's a waste of money as far as I'm concerned.

Paul, we're born with a clean slate, neither gay nor straight. Our sexuality is formed.

Jim, my comment about African Americans was in response to Chapeau's comment: "Being a Log Cabin Republican these days must feel like being an African-American person supporting and voting for Strom Thurmond..."

Guys, when I tell people I'm gay most laugh because they think I'm joking. When I started a new job a few years ago, my co-workers asked about a wife or g/f, and when I told them I was gay they didn't believe it. I had my partner come into work to meet them. They thought it was a joke and that I had put a friend up to it. And the girls thought he was way too hot to be gay. (whatever that means?) After finally knowing me a while they realized I wasn't kidding.

We don't subscribe to the gay lifestyle so many of you deny you are living. We don't live in a gay city. Our neighborhood is filled with heterosexuals who come over with their kids to use the pool and we have cookouts. We don't march in gay parades or have rainbow flags anywhere. We don't have an open relationship, like 9 out of 10 gay men usually get into.

Prior to getting together, neither one of us had one night stands or friends with benefits, only ltr's, so we were both on the same page as far as monogamy goes. Sadly, we've seen friends get STD's and AIDS. We live our lives with class and dignity, and we get respect because we don't shove the "we are gay, live with it!" attitude down everyone's throat.

We just live our lives. If you want to hate people for being Republican then you are ignorant. I also eat burgers and steaks, so PETA hates me, too. I have friends who are Libertarians, Democrats, and Independants. I love them all just the same. At the end of the day we're all human.

Enough said.

The Log-eating Cabal of (same-gender loathing) Republicans would defend Hitler at the Nuremburg Trials. They are drawn to the exclusive clubbiness of other conforming Republicans (and surprisingly not that white Citizen Geek) while Democrats are more the varied Diaspora of America, including the Gay population. Choice: Do I want Choice or someone to Control me?

Mike was lowered into the Hallmark Greeting card machine and came out scrambled. We have to recognize that there is a lot of mental illness in our population (especially after 8 years of 'W') who will actually become as homophobic as straights.

It's also interesting that the often maligned "Celebrities" who would most gain from the Bush/McCain/Palin Tax Cut for the filthy, tawdry rich, have demonstrated an uncharacteristic maturity when it comes to their support for "Barack Obama" echoing the real fears of Americans. "Aye, I can see Russia from me Porch. Now let's shoot-em!"

Buy your tickets to "W" the movie in advance at Fandango.com (it will be sold out everywhere!)

Paul - I'd have to hear the whole conversation because when I tried that the answer usually rolled around to "I didn't have to choose to be straight", it's NORMAL - reproduction and all then all the other reasons.

M A R K - I hope the mean 'ol queers on this website didn't scare you away! (Just kidding) but seriously - why "choose" to be Gay? Can you personally make the choice to be straight? If so, why didn't you? It is a real difficult being Gay sometimes.... for me anyway.

I'm gay, my brother is straight. A preacher told us that being gay was a choice. My brother asked the preacher when he chose to be gay. A very annoyed preacher replied that he was not gay. My brother asked him when did he choose not to be gay and be straight instead. The preacher said he was born straight, and my brother asked at what point in his life did he choose not to be gay.

When someone tells you being gay is a choice try my brother's reasoning.

Hey Mike, do we get a different NBC SNL in Canada? Nope.

I have seen a Barack Obama character on SNL, you must have missed it.

There is so much material for Tina Fey to do Sarah Palin becuase Sarah Palin is such a complete and total moron.

Tina does it so well, never laughed so hard in my life!

If Ms. Palin truly doesn't know whether being gay is a choice, why does she contintue to choose to use the word "choice" in connection with sexuality. Is it that she's being disingenuous or that her vocabulary is so poor that she doesn't know any other word? Probably both.

I agree with Alco.

Nobody knows what determines sexual orientation, although millions of dollars have been spent trying to answer that question. I think the whole nature vs nuture debate takes away from the real issue, which is treating people fairly.

The only thing you can "choose" is whether to be true to yourself or stay in the closet and live a lie.

Being gay is not a choice but being a Republican is. A stupid choice but still a choice. Ask heterosexuals when they first decided they were going to be heterosexual.

Mike, everyone skipped over your comment about not feeling like an African American. I'm not sure what you mean by that, as I am not sure that one's haplogroup as anything to do with one's "feeling" a certain way. From the comments you've made here I take it that you feel disconnected from many aspects of your biology and ascribe your entire existence to your "choice" to "be".

Good luck with all of that.

I don't get LCRs.

Plus, look at all the lemmings who followed Bush Junior. And yet, most of them FINALLY have come around to their senses (and looking past religious reasons to vote, or hatred of gays, or abortion, etc) and are hating on Bush now.

Save all of us some grief and just vote Democratic.

Republicans are AGAINST gays. Why support someone who hates us?

Republicans are AGAINST gays. Why support someone who hates us?

The LRC’s happily take their seats in the back of the slow bus that trails behind the rest of American society. If you choose to be political leaders, my gay Republican friends, it would benefit us all if you would be more active in your advocacy.

Wow, Mike...you've really got things figured out! Scientists and psychologists all over the world pouring $$$ into the search for the possibility of a genetic influence on human sexuality, and you already know for sure that there isn't one!

Think of all the time any money they could have saved if they'd just asked you - the all-knowing, all-seeing Oracle-Guru of sexuality!

Well, Mike when you say it's a choice I disagree strongly. Like you liking or not coffee, that's not a choice either. You should look up the definition in a dictionnary.

Choosing NOT to drink coffee because you don't like it, IS indeed a choice, as choosing to drink it even though you don't like it is.
Choosing to accept yourself as you are is indeed a choice, having secret gay sex in public restroom is a choice as well, but the fact is, you're gay.

I never had sex with a girl, never felt like it, never felt bad because I was attracted to guys. I didn't make a choice being gay, I made a choice not hiding it and denying it, THAT is a choice.

Saying being gay is a choice is just plain stupid and people should learn the meaning of the words they use before bitching about it when someone calls them up on it.

people are either right or left, those undecided care not to share how they really feel. Call it a choice if you choose, or call it a duck. The name is not the point. This women is not ready to take over when Mcsame dies, and in this office I give him a year before he is gone and a hockey mom is your new president. then listen to these same people complain.
I choose to be a duck! Mark Chooses to be a straight guy who loves men. Go Mark go!

I'm personally of the persuasion that most sexuality and gender roles are, too a very large extent, based on social constructions that attempt to rationalize or justify a particular view of what is inarguably an innate anatomy. And that individual, and larger group decisions, contribute to that. And I do believe that applies to homosexuality as well.

That said, that doesn't mean even if I believe that one can construct and build their own gender/sexual identity as they so choose, that I believe Sarah Palin was being that subtle or sophisticated in that statement. Let's be clear here; she is not staking out some claim for a radical redefinition of gender or sexuality, or standing up for one's ability to fashion those things with the "choices" one makes, but indicating, like other sinful activities (premarital sex, drinking, gambling, etc) that it is the choice of a person to engage in such sinful behavior.

Are Republicans born stupid, or do they choose to be that way?

Truth is, it doesn't matter, they deserve to be allowed to marry each other just like everybody else.

Yes Mike, and there are also gay men that so loathe their gayness that they trumpet how "straight-acting" they are. Given some of your previous statements, I guessed you are perhaps one of these. Your idea of individuality seems to mean assimilation, based on your judgments of the myriad of sexual activities some people choose to participate in.

And I notice how many people in general are supporting Obama and not McCain. I also notice that they make fun of Palin because frankly she's about as deep as a puddle after a spring shower.
