Cassidy Lynn Campbell became an instant LGBT icon last week when the 16-year-old was named the nation’s first transgender homecoming queen. Now she continues her reign with a photo shoot to raise awareness for photographer Adam Bouska’s NOH8 campaign, which promotes equality through visual protest.
Following Campbell’s victory at Marina High School in Huntington Beach. Calif., she posted a tearful video in which she discussed the continued bullying she faced as a transgender teen and how hurt she was by criticism from hateful commenters. She quickly received an outpouring of support, including an invitation from Bouska to participate in his iconic photo campaign.

If she is wanting to transition fully, I hope she can turn some of this into enough money to get going soon, so she can just enjoy her 20’s+.. but I guess that is naive of me. Some people will never let her identify as she feels, and who knows if she is even wanting that.

I think it is fantastic that she won homecoming queen, good for her!
As for the headline about her “Visual Protest Against Hate”, um…it’s the “NoH8” campaign, anybody gives them a few dollars and they take a picture, it’s been going on forever. The headline made it sound like she had done something major.
Her doing the NoH8 picture is much much smaller than her living her life and the lessons on acceptance she taught her classmates. Thats the real story!

This makes me wanna puke.

@Dxley: Believe it or not, but the article was not about YOUR sexual proclivities…

I wonder if the poor girl had to dig out $40 to join the NOH8 PR cult or did the “nonprofit” actually not charge her.
From their website:
Q. WHAT IS THE COST TO PARTICIPATE IN AN OFFICIAL OPEN PHOTO SHOOT?
A. Unless otherwise noted, pricing at photo shoots break down as follows: solo photos (1 person) are $40 while group/couple photos (2+ people) are $25 per person in a shot. Children Ages 12 and Under and Service Members with a Valid Military ID will receive 1 (one) complimentary NOH8 portrait.

I am proud of Cassidy, not just as a fellow transperson and not just as a fellow Orange Countian, but also as one who has put her neck on the metaphoric chopping block to take a stand for human rights. I think we will see more of Cassidy Lynn Campbell in years to come.
