We’ve all heard the claims about Malcolm X sleeping with both men and women (he even married and had children with one!). And with the release of of Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention — from the late Manning Marable, a biographer of the activist — we get to relive them! (His daughters aren’t so happy about it.) But c’mon, who can forget our favorite Malcolm X tale? The one where he talks about getting dudes off for some scratch.
Yet Perry’s book documents Malcolm X’s many gay experiences. A schoolmate, Bob Bebee, recalls the day they stumbled on a local boy jerking off. Malcolm, Bebee recalled, ordered the youth to masturbate him, and subsequently boasted he had given him oral sex. Later, from the age of 20, Malcolm had sex with men for money – as hinted at in Spike Lee’s 1992 biopic – and he had at least one sustained sexual liaison with a man. While living in Flint, Michigan, his roommate noticed that instead of sleeping in the room they were sharing, Malcolm sneaked down the hall to spend the night with a gay transvestite named Willie Mae.
In New York, two of Malcolm’s friends from Michigan remember bumping into him at the YMCA, where Malcolm bragged he earned money servicing “queers”. Later, Malcolm worked as a butler to a wealthy Boston bachelor, William Paul Lennon. According to Malcolm’s sidekick Malcolm Jarvis, he was paid to sprinkle Lennon with talcum powder and bring him to orgasm. Perry suggests that Malcolm’s gay encounters may not have been entirely financially motivated. His masculine insecurities and ambivalence towards women fit the archetype of a repressed gay man and point to latent homosexuality.
Sadly, there were no Hookie Awards in the mid-20th century, because I’m pretty sure Malcolm X would’ve taken home the Mr. International Escort title. He traveled to The Africa even!
kayla
Malcolm X is dead and can’t speak…I’m always weary of people who come out of the woodwork claiming to have had liaisons with those who have already passed on…Where’s the proof?

This is the stupidest, most offensive thing I’ve read in years. This makes Maggie Gallagher look like Mary-Kate Olsen.
TheRealAdam
He used homophobic, racially-charged language toward whites, calling white men “white faggots.” Maybe that was a projection of his own insecure feelings about his attractions to men?
It’s amazing how history has done a great job of erasing homosexuality from individuals when it’s considered an “inconvenience” to their character and status in popular imagination. Most African-Americans probably don’t even know or care to know about X’s potential same-sex attractions and relations, much like the Gandhi episode.
Mike
MALCOLM X WAS NOT GAY AND WOULD NEVER BE INVOLVED WITH THAT KIND OF THING!! I JUST FELL UPON THESE LIES WHILE SEARCHING THE INTERNET. PLEASE STOP THE LIES, MALCOLM WAS A PROUD BLACK MAN!!!
Lefty
I thought it was generally accepted that he was gay and has been for years.
This is hardly news, is it?
bab
@Mike
LMAO!
“I JUST FELL UPON THESE LIES WHILE SEARCHING THE INTERNET”
… that’s what they all say. :p
Lefty
^ They always seem to type in capitals too. It’s like they accidentally hit the caps lock in all the excitment…
Ken
Funny how it’s fine to talk about a famous man (dead or alive) being a womanizer and, while a few may shake their heads and go “tsk-tsk”, it’s generally OK. After all, boys will be boys and all that. But mention a famous man hooking up with another dude and then it’s “Oh horrors!”
You would think, given the actual degree of actual sexual experimentation that goes on in most people’s lives, that more folks would get over the whole judgemental sex thing. Reminds me of a British friend who once joked that the best thing about America was it allowed Europe and England to get rid of the “Puritan gene”.

I just LOVE how even an anonomous poster is so insecure that he has to pretend he just “Accidentally” came in here.
LOL!!!! Oh give us a break. I also love the fact that supposedly he can’t be gay because he was proud and black? I have news for you closet case, there are PLENTY of gay men who are both.
Mike
I really don’t care what you people say about me, but this is a blatant attempt to emasculate the memory of a proud black man when there is ZERO proof, just the hearsay of liars. If you people want to give up your manhood for sexual pleasure then so be it. But leave Malcolm X alone.
Jeffree
I love me some unskilled trolling!
“I was just searching “GAY MALCOLM X” for no reason at all and happened upon this site. How could I have known Queerty would be a blog encouraging people to be lesbigay? I’m offended.”
Dear MIKE: Next time, try searching “HOW TO USE CAPITAL LETTERS.”
Jeffree
@MIKE: Did you eveb read the article? Your argument is with Manning Marable a.k.a THE GUY WHO WROTE THE BIOGRAPHY, not with us.
Mike
I’m done here. Just please know that these lies will never stick no matter how hard you sick human beings try. Misery surely likes company, and let me lastly say that any black man who engages in homosexuality is a disgrace and should kill themselves. As for white men, well they are not known for their masculinity so nobody really cares. Goodbye.

@Mike
My “manhood” is doing pretty well! Thank you for asking.

@Mike – “MALCOLM WAS A PROUD BLACK MAN”
Yep, he stood full to attention and was very proud!

I’ve noticed a pattern that on many of these “black” articles, there’s always some anonymous drive-by troll who comes in to throw everything out of sync. I don’t think it’s a coincidence; I think the person doing this is actually a regular here and just posts under a different name each time when a discussion of blacks/black homophobia comes up.

Which one of the Village People was Malcolm X? The cop?

For somebody done here Mike you SUUUUURE are staying on the gay blog for a long time. The space between your postings on here was around 45 min. Gee Mike, what were you doing on a GAY blog for 45 min???
Lefty
I think Mike’s gone to accidentally just fall upon Gaydar…
Jeffree
@Cam: Nicely played. I tip my hat to you.
@Lefty: I think Mike just left to sign up for Grindr! Or to explore “Morning Goods”
@TheRealAdam: I think you’re right about the trolls. I used to think the drive-bys were “jason” but his sockpuppets usually use the same catch phrases and impeccable comma usage. Whoever it is, he is usually among the first three commenters on the thread, so the Google Alert has to be running in the background.

There is homophobia everywhere…NOT just in the black population. Thanks!
soakman
Please all of you, do yourself a favor and look up a man by the name of Bayard Rustin. If you think you know about the erasure of important gay figures, there might be a reason.
Rustin was Martin Luther King Jr.’s gay black campaign advisor. He gave King Jr. his pacifism push, and the politics for which he became an important civil rights leader. Rustin himself said that homosexuality would be the last push in the civil rights movement. And that racism had to be overturned first to begin the attempt to remove homophobia. He kept his identity and relation to King Jr. under wraps so that the movement could be advanced.
Sometimes there are political reasons that are valid for keeping our invisibility. In this case, Rustin managed to use it to his advantage.
ewe
@Mike: goodbye. please keep your word dumb ass fuckin nigger
kayla
@ewe: Mike hates gays…you hate blacks….hmm….
ewe
@kayla: I just had chili. talk to my bent over asshole. It’s dribbling shit too.
ewe
I can get all sort of straight guys, black white asian indian to do all sorts of things for twenty bucks.
kayla
@ewe: I don’t even know what that means (I do get the feeling it’s vulgar)…please try again so I can respond…I’m truly slow but, God made me this way….Je suis désolée!
ewe
@Mike: I would pull your hair mike but you are probably too busy blending.
ewe
@kayla: You don’t know a lot of things because you are a pc cunt.
kayla
@ewe: Wow! Why are you so angry…The C-word is truly the last resort of misogynists with nothing worthwhile to say…I simply pointed out that your comment was racist…and someone complaining about homophobia while making racist comments seemed quite ironic to me…that’s all…
JT
Malcolm X was bisexual but this is OLD news. A book about this subject was published decades ago.
Paula Brooks
My first thoughts on reading this article were… privileged white boy wrote this
Jeffree
@PaulaBrooks: The article cites a book by Manning Marable, who I do believe is African-American. As for the writer of the article, someone else will have to inform you of his ethnicity or SES.
Jonathan
Ugh. That last paragraph was a BIT much.
Paula Brooks
I know who wrote the book…. a guy for the last year or so probably knew he was dying…. and who can now not be queried on his sourcing…but who certainly has made sure the family is now well taken care of with a sensationalize best selling book.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/manning-marable-author-of-long-awaited-malcolm-x-biography-dies-at-60/2011/04/02/AFWlCXXC_story.html
However from that last paragraph… I am still pretty sure privileged white boy wrote the article.
ewe
@kayla: It is not racist to call a black person bashing whites and fags a dumb ass nigger.
ewe
@Paula Brooks: I am pretty sure you are a crack head and a two dollar ho.
kayla
@ewe: Are you just Jason…? I mean you both have the same Modus Operandi…I’m beginning to think you’re one and the same…You must know that when you say such outrageous (and vulgar) things you’re going to get strong negative reactions (which may be what you’re hoping for)…I am no fan of Paula Brooks, but did you have to go there…?
Chitown Kev
lol at this thread.
do I laugh, cry, cry to keep myself from laughing, laugh to keep myself from crying, or do I make sense out of all this nonsense?
I’m so confused.
Paula Brooks
@ewe: and I am pretty sure you are a racist who does not have 2 brain cells to rub together…
Paula Brooks
@kayla: thanks for stick up for me… sort of… and please Kayla do stay out of traffic

I’m a fan of Queerty and as a fellow queer writer and journalist I respect their sense of humor when it comes to giving us “queer news”
That being said…I’m dissapointed that this writer (JD) would take the opportunity to explore a complex man (Brother Malcolm) and a complex issue (queer identity and the MSM phenomenon within communities of color) and turn it into a dumb, offensive piece of faggotry.
Malcolm X was a champion and a pioneer of civil rights…he helped dismantle this thing we call WHITE SUPREMACY that still has a choke hold on the American pysche decades later.
I respect and enjoy this websites sense of humor and satire when it comes to combating homophobia/transphobia and outright ignorance to queer ppl but in respect to this article ms.JD has FAILED….in epic porportions.
It was IGNORANT.
Ya’ll can do better.
ewe
@Paula Brooks: goody for you paula. you have everyones permission to stay stupid. you hypocritical racist cunt. go elsewhere.
ewe
@kayla: You really are kind of dumb aren’t you? Go back and read in order the comments then practice the sense of equality you think you fucking possess. I give what i get and i got hate and gave it back and people that i give it to know their pc bullshit has to take a detour round me. Open up your fucking eyes and see that the people claiming others are racist are the first ones to attack. You are an Idiot!!! Passive and annoying.
