Meet the 95 Lutheran Clergy Who Just Came Out

elca1

This week the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which has quite possibly the gayest logo of any religious entity, is meeting in Minneapolis to vote on whether the church will permit sexually active gays from joining the clergy. Yes, mere human mortals will decide which type of people are permitted to get closer to god. And as a lead-up to the vote? Ninety-five clergy members came out.

A booklet called One Table, Many Blessings is being distributed amongst church members to show just how many people will be affected if the vote goes against LGBTs. The booklet includes the names of the 95 “actively gay” clergy members, some of whom have families.

Currently, only celibate gays can join the clergy, because they’re less fabulous.

Nice. Courage is coming out and then sticking around to demand change.

@Distingué Traces: Thanks! As one of the 95, who did not “just come out,” and has been single and still received the cold shoulder of the ELCA church (from which I did not flee because they wouldn’t do things my way), I appreciate your comment. As I am acquainted with about half of the rest of the 95, I’m pretty sure most of them have, as I have, been out for years.

I am totally surprised at my church and its leaders. In genesis it explicitly says homosexuality is wrong. If we just say that we can pick and choose what God says is right are we being good children of the Most High God.? I pray that we all receive Him and welcome others to do so as well. It is not my job to judge, lest I be judged. I do not hate homosexuals, they are His children too. I do have a problem with having a homosexual in a Pastoral position. When the tornado hit the Minnesota Elca voting place was it a mystery? Why did the US weather service not see it coming? Some say it was the hand of the Almighty. We who were not there can not say. I pray that peace returns to the Lutherans who like me are in pain. I have prayed for guidance, and heard the word Peace in my head… We all know it is Peace He gives us..
