Meghan McCain Pushes Herself Into “Gay Ally” Category

Part of us wants to say: Meghan McCain, we don’t need you on our side. Part of us wants to say: Meghan, you “progressive Republican,” great to have you, thanks for coming out in support of gay marriage. And part of us wants to say: Meghan, just take that stupid band off your head.

I say welcome to the struggle and take that silly thing off your head. When Republicans start sounding more like Meghan, more gays will start sounding like Republicans. Best thing for the community actually. And I say that as a staunch Democrat.

Hopefully, Meghan McCain is a sign of what’s to come… A time when “gay marriage” is no longer the hot button “wedge issue” it is today.

Go Meghan! I like this girl.

She’s clearly gunning for Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s job on The View. And I say GIVE IT TO HER.

We need more republicans to start sounding like Meghan McCain. She’s right: the Republican party shouldn’t be issues-based, especially if it has any hope of moving forward. So I say keep it up. But seriously, no more hats.

What we need is more Republican politicians that sound like Meghan McCain.

What I find depressing is that she’s the only one saying this. What happened to the older, established moderate Republicans who turned tail and ran during the Bush years? Not that I want the Republicans back in power, but as it is inevitable one day, I’d much rather have a party of Meghan McCains than a party of Ann Coulters in power.

This is going to sound snippy, but it’s an honest question. Isn’t she by definition no longer a Republican? If Republicans – by definition – don’t believe in marriage equality or freedom of choice… then someone who believes those things is no longer a Republican. It feels like a third party (gasp) is starting to emerge.

On one hand, glad to hear there’s at least some Republicans trying to move progressively in the social spectrum.

On the other hand, I’m just waiting for Rush to get a hold of this and call her a fat dyke on air.

@jeffrey bryan: I believe that republicains(hah, hah) are also defined by their support for a free market economy, tax cuts and general suspicion towards any form of pro-active government, as well as conservative social issues (although I speak as a non american). And I say fair play to her, and shush about the hat. If Sarah Palin ever chokes on her words and crokes it this girl will look stunnin’ at the funeral.

I like her, lets hope that this new generation of Republicans can all be accepting of all peoples. or just accepting of Nia Peeples.

She espouses the basic tenets of Libertarianism. For gay people, or Americans in general, Libertarianism provides the greatest amount of freedom and opportunity. Less gov’t involvement in the economy, less gov’t involvement in social issues. Freedom and empowerment to those who work hard and are responsible for themselves. Sounds like every gay person I know.

Maybe it’s just me, but she sounds like a pro-choicer in the making.

I like Meghan McCain about 100x more than her dad.

If she’s the new face of young conservatism, awesome. I think that she’ll get a lot of positive attention as a moderate Republican voice.

Every prominent Republican who is against discrimination is good for U.S. society as a whole, even if you don’t support their other positions. No party should have a monopoly on supporting equal civil rights. Welding fiscal or other conservative principles to discrimination is bad for Republicans, and it’s worse for gay people because it makes our lives a left-right issue, and our lives shouldn’t be. Supporting civil rights concerns everybody, and nobody should be out there feeling like if they want to be pro-gun or something, they have to be anti-gay too because those are the “values” held by “people like them”. It’s just unnecessary and wrong.

Sorry but everything she says falls flat if she still identifies as a Republican. She is, by association, supporting Nazi-like behavior and policies. The Republican party is corrupt beyond repair. She is misleading people into thinking that there is this warm cozy wave of niceness coming through the party that just isn’t there.

@jeffrey bryan: Yes, the majority of Republicans don’t believe in equal rights for gays and lesbians or freedom of choice, but that gap is slowly closing. Maybe is has to do with them realizing more people don’t see things their way or just have better things to do with their time than be bigoted busybodies, or actually (hopefully )changing their minds. Remember there are plenty of Democrats who don’t believe in equal rights either, our President being one of them.

love her, and i don’t hate the headband. i think she accurately reflects a large segment of the US: fiscal conservatives and social liberals, hearkening back to the historical roots of the GOP. (back before the mass defection of the southern dems who came in and grabbed the reins.)
