“Ethnic and racial minorities will comprise a majority of the population of the United States in a little more than a generation, according to new Census Bureau projections, a transformation that is occurring faster than anticipated just a few years ago. The census calculates that by 2042, Americans who identify themselves as Hispanic, black, Asian, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander will together outnumber non-Hispanic whites. Four years ago, officials had projected the shift would come in 2050.” [IHT]

Good. We need serious diversity to remain competitive.

It is nothing to fear. At the end of the 19th century we became radically diverse with many nationalities flooding in from Europe. We are a nation of immigrants. Including those pilgrims…..
Jason
Actually those Pilgrims were not Immigrants. They were colonizing new lands for Britain which really by definition doesn’t qualify them as immigrants since they were moving within their own borders. The folks that founded the U.S.A were not Immigrants either, they were founders. Can’t be called an immigrant to a country that didn’t exist. They were Native U.S. Citizens. So, actually we are not all bred from immigrants.
Its also a fallacy to call Indians natives since they had nothing to do with the creation and implementation of the United States. They were simply natives of the land and that is not what made our great country great.
CHURCHILL-Y
@ 2: We had nothing to fear back then because the migrants came in legally and had some notion of civility and respect of others. It’s a damn shame if something like this actually comes into fruition, especially for Gay people we will be the ones who suffer the most because of it. Most of these non-European immigrants bring with them their homophobic backward attitudes and as they increase in their numbers they’ll infiltrate every American institution eroding what little advancements we’ve made so far.

Mwahahahahah we’re taking over!!

The logical gymnastics of this are hilarious. I am sure then, when I move into this asshats property, and assert that I am “What makes this country great”, he too should roll over and take it. After all, my ridiculous overwrought flag waving statement of patriotism is what GRANTS me land, not actually paying for it, or living on it, or even talking to the current occupants about sharing it.

Funny, I’m pretty sure the Republican Party is made up almost entirely of white people, and yet it consistently upholds discrimination against gays. I’m certainly more afraid of local evangelical windbags than any mysterious wave of immigrants (which rpesumes that a certain percentage of those coming here aren’t ESCAPING LGBT people from oppressive countries).
Are some immigrants, on the whole, more conservative? Maybe. But it doesn’t manifest itself in the same way; after all, in a recent study, Pew found that despite being overwhelmingly social conservative, American Muslims overwhelmingly (4 to 1) vote for Democrats. They also believe in social welfare programs and health care, believe in gun control, and are rather split on the issue of homosexuality (if they are overwhelmingly pro-life).
Why are things this way when compared to very obvious attitudes and practices of Muslim majority countries? Mostly because of their minority status, and the fact that the general attitude (though it doesn’t always shine through, and especially the past 8 years) is the American governments neutrality on hotly debated social issues, which protects Muslim minorities from ridiculous Christian evangelicals, and also protects (or should in theory, anyways) LGBT individuals from being targeted.
This is not to say that such demographic issues don’t present serious potentials for ethnic or religious civil strife. No one would point out Lebanon or Northern Ireland as sterling examples of what happens when a country is divided so evenly between differing social groups. America already went through its civil war a hundred years ago, and the racial tensions of the 60’s are still sore even today.
But as America gets more and more diverse, I have confidence, despite disappointments, that America can handle such diversity. This country is the single most demographically diverse place in the world, and I can’t imagine that changing, or the tolerance that keeps everything held together being absolutely destroyed, though it may fray around the edges.

@ CHURCHILL-Y
That’s RACIST!
“Most of these non-European immigrants bring with them their homophobic backward attitudes and as they increase in their numbers they’ll infiltrate every American institution eroding what little advancements we’ve made so far.”
And this is ludicrous. You DO know that the “non-European immigrants” you mention had cultures where homos were revered and spiritual leaders until… what happened? Oh yeah, Europe came in with her religion, her morals, her homophobia and made them defile themselves and their communities — a rip that is still gaping.
I don’t know why I am responding to you, but I can’t help it. I mean… you front as though you know something about the world, but you lack the balanced approach that would have made you seek knowledges you didn’t always possess. It wouldn’t have made you any less racist or an asshole, but at least I wouldn’t have to bang my head against the desk because one more white gay person is twisting whiteness to achieve something it tore down…
But eh… I don’t expect you to understand.
