BAH HUMBUG!

MI Grinches Want To Ruin Christmas By Letting Adoption Agencies Reject Gay Couples

It could be a blue Christmas for the nearly 14,000 children in Michigan’s foster-care system: The House Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors is expected to vote today on whether an adoption agency can discriminate against applicants based on its religious or moral grounds. Translation: Children will remain in orphanages because that’s better than being raised by a loving, gay parent.

Not only would these proposed measures codify discrimination, they’d ensure agencies denying gay parents would have their public funding protected.

Equality Michigan mobilized its troops and got allies to send more than 8,500 emails to legislators serving on the committee. It also got the vote delayed from November, in hopes of increasing pressure to kill the bills.

Rep. Kenneth Kurtz (R-Coldwater) is the lead sponsor of both measures, House Bills 5763 and 5764. We could rail against this douche but  Equality Michigan’s Emily Dievendorf said it better:

“[Rep. Kurtz] underestimated the interest people in Michigan have both in keeping an eye on their elected officials and in protecting our children. Citizens of Michigan have spoken loud and clear, they do not want these vile bills harming any foster children. We are going to keep the pressure on all week and kill these bills before they waste any more time and money.”
