MI Rep. Mike Rogers Wants Bradley Manning Dead (If Guilty Of Leaking)

Rep. Mike Rogers, the Michigan Republican who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, wants Bradley Manning, the queer Army private, executed if found guilty of leaking classified military documents to Wikileaks. (He also doesn’t like the idea of anyone thinking leaking such files has any positive benefit.) “We know for a fact that people will likely be killed because of this information being disclosed,” he told radio station WHMI. “That’s pretty serious. If they don’t charge him with treason, they ought to charge him with murder. I argue the death penalty clearly should be considered here,” he said. “He clearly aided the enemy to what may result in the death of U.S. soldiers . . . If that is not a capital offense, I don’t know what is.”

Sorry I gots zero sympathy for that little scumbag. We had a definite mission to go into Afghanstan and that was to seek out Bin Ladin for his role in planning the 9/11 attacks. We lost the backing of the world and most of this country when Bush suddenly decided to turn on a dime, forget about Bin Ladin and go on his escapade into Iraq. That was a huge mistake, we should have never gone into there and the whole damm mess has turned into a total clusterfuck for everyone involved.

That all being said, there are thousands of our soldiers there now in harms way. And a good many of them happen to be Gay. What this little scumbag did jeapordized the safety and well being of many of them. And if it does turn out that the rumblings that he is actually Gay or trans will give even more fuel to the anti-Gay fires for preventing soldiers from serving in the military.

We as the Gay community need not rush to defend this little scumbag simply because he may be one of us. Most likely his actions placed many of our Gay brothers and Lesbian sisters in harms way. Every soldier knows there are specific rules for treason. If your actions are proven to give aid and comfort to the enemy you know full well what they are and you suffer the consequences……..

@whatever: A hero? You’re twisted. This is a sad day for American government. You can bet that the Taliban and their associates are pouring over these papers and will make use of the information therein. There will likely be American deaths. There will almost certainly be violence perpetrated against those Afghans who provided information to us. It’s outrageous that Wikileaks allowed some of their names to be printed in full rather than redacted. Also unfortunate is the chilling effect this will have on interdepartmental information sharing. You think we had trouble connecting the dots pre-9/11, just wait and see how insular our intelligence agencies are going to be after this fiasco. Probably the worst of it all is how much information hostile governments now have about how our intelligence and MI resources operate. If this kid is guilty, he’s done a lot of irreparable harm to this country. The only people who should consider him a hero are the Taliban and the Chinese intelligence agency.

If he is responsible for the leaks he is a traitor, plain and simple. I can’t believe people think it is okay to leak classified government documents when we are fighting a war with an enemy that is determined to eradicate us. He put his fellow troops in harms way and he has put the U.S. in harms way, therefore he should meet whatever penalty is permissible by U.S. law. I have never been a fan of the death penalty myself but it is not my decision.

Support for Obama’s management of the war fell to 36%, down from 48% in a February poll. Now, a record 43% also say it was a mistake to go to war there after the terrorist attacks in 2001.” Political Wire

I’d be all for staying there if what you proposed is possible. But let’s be real Karzai wants us there to prop up his government but not to do the real work needed because it would make him unpopular with the Afghan people. As stated in the previous post where the persons couldn’t hit the thumbs down fast enough (what a suprise) I 100% disagree with this whole clusterfuck situation in Iraq and now Afghanstian that Bush got us embroiled in. However take off the rose colored clases and realize putting our soldiers at risk and leaving us open to more potential attacks by leaking confidential information to the enemy is not going to end the war. We are there and unfortunately we need to deal with it and find a way out of it without jeapordizing our troops. And once again there are lots of rumors this little scumbag is either Gay or trans. How about all the additional grief that Gay and Lesbian soldiers will now face because of his actions??? Whether or not you believe this is a “just war” or one we need to get out of ASAP, I cannot for any reason fathom why we should support a soldier leaking classified military documents. He screwed up big time, and has to be held accountable. Any arguments about a “just” or “unjust” war are nothing more than red herring arguments meant to detract from the real issue, which is the criminal activity this soldier engaged in and must be held accountable for.

They forget this guy violated the law. But you’re right. It seems that since a Republican commented on a tangentially queer issue, anything he says must be bad.

Just because Rogers is a douche (with some serious language problems… “know for a fact it will” and “likely” are mutually exclusive concepts) and Manning might be gay doesn’t make Manning a victim or a hero or anything else that deserves sympathy.

I hate to break it to you, but the people that founded this country believed that the government should not lie to the American people. The believed that so wholeheartedly that they wrote freedom of press and freedom of speech into the constitution. The forefathers believed that when you knew about wrong doing by your own country you take a stand. America has been very dirty in the whole Iraq/Afghanistan mess, and if people knew the true extent of what they have done they would demand withdraw and send GW and DC to jail not this kid that has brought light to the very tip of our wrong doings. This blind faith and loyalty to our country has got to stop at some point.

@Dawson: Hear, hear. And let’s not forget,

“The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be *full liberty to tell the truth about his acts*, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But *it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant*, about him than about any one else.” – Theodore Roosevelt.

What’s good enough for the president surely is good enough for government, or the military.

“By the way, your ad hominem attacks have done nothing to disprove everything I said.

Yes, I am a proud bigot. I am bigoted against the enemies of the Jews. I am bigoted against the enemies of the gay community. I am bigoted against people who hate me and want me dead for a “being crime.” I am bigoted against land robbers and genocidal maniacs. I am bigoted against people who worship thieves and child molesters.”

@Kieran: All US service-members are instructed (at their basic service schools) that it is their duty to question, disobey, and to report an illegal or unconstitutional order through an alternate chain of command – usually through the Judge Advocate General’s office. If they do follow an illegal order they are personally accountable/liable to prosecution for their actions in both military and civilian courts. This is made very clear to every single one of them before they end up in a unit. “I was just following orders”, “I can’t question orders”, or “I had no choice but to follow the order” is not a legal, ethical, or moral excuse according to the UCMJ, civilian US law, or the Geneva Convention.

Please save smart-ass comments. Just pointing out the difference between German soldiers during WWII and US soldiers according to law.

I don’t believe a “hero” puts the lives of uninvolved people at risk unnecessarily (especially with a hypocritical anti-war political agenda).

And that is exactly what Manning did. At the least he is a hypocrite and at the worst a treasonous murderer. Even if one disagrees/denies that he put the lives of US service-members at risk, according to the Taliban the civilian Afghan informers will be beheaded (and probably that of their families). I don’t doubt the sincerity of the Taliban to take action and do so either.

As far as Wikileaks – they operate secretly, protect their secret sources and Assange has collected over a million US dollars for his actions while accepting that there may be collateral damage in lives. If you can’t see the ironic hypocrisy in that you need to think about things more.

@Bill Perdue: Funny how some of my anti-anti-gay beliefs overlap with yours yet I, not you, am the psychopath.

How do you tell a good post on Queerty? By how many people voted thumbs down on it.

The last statement, “If that’s not a capitol offense, what is?” How about poisoning the entire gulf of Mexico?
