Lemme get this straight:

Michael Lucas is tending to his dying mother but he can find the time to set up a photo shoot with The New York Times? Maybe this is why Guy Trebay lost interest in Mr. Lucas.

Mr. Lucas acknowledges that Trebay called and expressed his condolences, why push the reporter to state the obvious? (That he’s no longer interested.)

Saying “the moment was lost” seems much more polite than “I now find you uninteresting and objectionable.” One can imagine that a brush off from a less august publication would be, well…abrupt, blunt, ungracious and/or harsh.

Seems like a case of biting the hand that feed you.

@Now My Butt Hurts: Exactly. Trebay didn’t do anything wrong, and Lucas is being an ass about a missed opportunity. Frankly it doesn’t matter why the shoot was cancelled. If it’s cancelled (obviously this was an important reason) and time marches on, you may not get that second chance. Consider this lesson #1 in “How Never To Get a Call Again From the New York Times.”

Clearly Lucas has enough money to get a publicist on retainer.. he may even have a few. Regardless, any PR professional with half a brain would make it abundantly clear that this isn’t the best way to resolve things or for Lucas to represent himself.

Although the missed opportunity was unfortunate, the best way to play it out would have been to gently remind him that you’d still love to speak to him and that he was always available for Guy as a resource. The hostile approach Lucas employed would only serve to piss the journalist off and make it incredibly unlikely that he (or the rest of the style section for that matter) would ever want to communicate with him again. Since Guy RARELY features a signal person in a story and does more cultural trend pieces.. I think it’s more likely that Lucas was one of several people he was interested in chatting with on a single subject. If the story was dropped or had been printed, badgering Guy isn’t likely to motivate him to revisit the topic.

So Lucas is pissed and he somehow thought that tossing this around as some kind of gossip item would be a great way to get some media hits and make the paper look bad. WRONG. He seems pissy, petty, and unprofessional.. and if he had any sort of goal of emerging from the adult world into a more mainstream celebrity.. well, he just warned virtually all producers and journalists exactly what a bitch he can be. good luck.
