And, wasn’t it up until 2003 that anti-gay sodomy laws were legal and enforced in parts of the U.S.?

The reality is that many Muslim countries are only 2 generations behind the U.S. State sponsored violence against gays in the U.S. was part of our recent history. The Stonewall riots happened just a few decades ago. Eastern Europe still has very violent, anti-gay sentiment.

Police in the U.S. are constantly cited for anti-gay violence or subjective enforcement of the laws: Houston saw police raid a bar and brutalize patrons; Chicago saw a police beat up gays and wrongly arrest gays of drunk driving; Atlanta saw police engage in a brutal bar raid; and NYC saw police falsely arrest gay men on trumped up prostitution charges. But the list goes on..

So, how does it feel to be a second class citizen in the U.S.? You know that your butt can still be fired in most states in the U.S. for being gay. You can be denied housing for being gay. You can’t be married and receive benefits that heterosexuals receive.

Are there anti-gay forces in the Muslim world. Yes. But the rest of the world isn’t so rosy for gays.

Face facts. There are plenty of people in the U.S. who hate gays and would be happy if GLBT disappeared into the wood works. They don’t consider you to be anything other than a pervert, undeserving of human rights.

What rights you have as a GLBT person in the U.S. have only been in existence for a single generation. Rights that were gained in one year are easily taken away, like in California and Maine.

So, again, most Muslim countries probably offer little protections for GLBT people. Some governments have strictly anti-gay legislation or allow for police action against GLBT people.

But similar bias and laws exist in non-Muslim countries. Try to be an out gay man in Russia or other Eastern European countries. Not pretty.

Arabs are a race and no one has said anything about them. Not all Arabs are Muslim, and vice versa (for instance, the Iranians are not Arabs). To insult all Arabs and lump them in would be racist. But we’ll cross that bridge if we get to it.

However, I must emphasize that Lucas has the full right to speak and express himself. the opening lines of the above text, in which Lucas’ occupation is being used cynically, is unacceptable and may even be considered racist. I think that Lucas shares his views in an intelligent and rreasoned way, and has a real intention to do good. he writes what he believes in, and you can tell that he is committed to the general interest. you may not always agree with him, but you should never rule out a place for open and free discussion.
