After she got done doing massive bong rips, occasional onstage lezzie Miley Cyrus decided to tweet a new generation of teeny-boppers something the rest of us have known since 2003—that Urban Outfitters is owned by Richard Haynes, a staunch conservative who has donated thousands to despicable anti-gay GOP Presidential candidate Rick “frothy mix” Santorum.
Dick and Rick are totes old news, Ms. Cyrus, but props on you for also mentioning Urban Outfitter’s latest penchant for copying pieces from independent designers—that shit is shady as hell. Oooh gurl, pass the weed.
Maybe you should consider mentioning the Dick-N-Rick show at your next performance, eh? What would Hannah Montana do?
IgnoranceIsDefinitelyNotBliss
Hey anyone ever consider the fact that she is actually saying something about this? I didn’t know, and yeah it is old news but, news flash I’m not that old (19y.o.). Obviously nothing has done about this, yet you are all off chasing major retail chains for being a part of a chamber of commerace that suppourted an anti-gay bill, HELLO NEWS FLASH: just because you actually like urban doesn’t mean you can ignore it! Stop trying to take down big organizations that aren’t affected by their image and gun towards corporations you can change. You think urban will be happy if all the gays start boycotting their stores. hell to the no… they will lose half there business. In stealing a line from chris crocker (or whatever the hell his name is…) LEAVE MILEY ALONE!
Anthony
Despite the sort of mean tone of this Queerty entry, I appreciate that she bothered to tweet it. She has over a million follows on twitter and many of them are in a much younger demographic than those reading LGBT blogs where, as you say, this is old news”old news.” Not everyone out their reads Queerty. I appreciate her.
samthor
No need to be bitchy Queerty, people do have short memories.
And Urban Outshitter deserves the extra kick now that it is down.
Glad to know she cares.
Red Meat
She just got a +1 from me (I gave her a +2 for smoking salvia),Total -12. Don’t lose heart!
Atlas
Stop being such a bitch, I think it’s awesome that she’s so vocal in her support, and reiterated a fact that a lot of her followers probably wouldn’t have known. I’m guessing most people who read Miley’s twitter habitually were in middle school at least in 2003.
You go Cyrus. I feel justified for all the times I’ve stood up for you.
DavyJones
Agree with the general tone of the comments; I’m glad she’s saying something; and while this may be old news to you, most of the people who read her tweet probably didn’t know about it…
Paulie
Queerty.com, why are you attacking an ally?
rf
I’m going to agree with all of the other commenters here too. The snark should have been directed at Santorum and Urban Outfitters not Cyrus.
JAW
There is a LOT more to the story… People are checking into the designers claims…. Let’s concentrate on that… will be interesting to see if she had a copywrite on her designs… or perhaps someone else did… Haynes is no longer the CEO of U.O. He has been replaced with an OUT GAY Man who helped to get FrothyMix defeated and replaced by Bob Casey who is LGBT Friendly.
Here is a link to a story from the Philadelphia Inq. from today 5/28/11…

I often wonder if Queerty generates all this bitchiness to attract more hits? I wonder too if the right wing trolls who frequent this site are all manufactured by Queerty. The more hits they get, no matter how offensive, earns them more money.
Cam
Good for Miley, she took a hit from the parents of some hans for her pro-gay views.
I never bought a CD of hers until then, but downloaded a long, and gave two of her CD’s to some friends. Hey, she’s supporting us, I’ll support her.
Adonis-of-Fire
Queerty seems to be run by mormons or log cabin republicans now;
Attacking allies, attacking those who are militant about gay rights,
etc
robert in NYC
No. 12 – Adonis-of-Fire….and some GOProuders too that is against marriage equality and were against repeal of DADT and now against ENDA. That Chris Barron who leads them is a moron and self-loather. He even married his boyfriend last year to show how fucked up he and his group are while opposing it. Beyond sick! He’s a psycho talker but then he’s in the right party isn’t he? Mostly all psychotics, no intellectual capacity and no facts to backup their claims, typical right wing republicans who are craving acceptance by their party which will NEVER happen. I wouldn’t be surprised if Barron et al support the ex-gay fraudsters.
robert in NYC
I meant to have said GOProuders who are against…..sorry for the error.
Truthful
This site is really run by such bitter queens – I work with teenagers and I even asked some of them if they were aware that Urban Outfitters is owned by an anti-LGBT conservative, not one of them knew that.
I’m sure most of Miley’s fans didn’t even know what Urban Outfitters was in 2003, and now that the store is much more appealing to younger people, I think it’s fantastic that she tweeted a reminder of its corrupt business.
Posts like these are the reason that our straight allies may shy away from vocalizing their support for the LGBT community. Making fun of her for occasionally smoking weed (and seriously, who hasn’t?), putting her next to a picture of a tiger AND berating her for expressing her sexuality loosely?
Come the fuck on, Queerty – grow up! Your bitterness will get you nowhere, unless you really want to be a d-list version of Perez Hilton.
EsOh
like stfu, everyone.
The owners of this company are conservative, yes. So are the owners of Forever 21.
But they gave money to a MANS CAMPAIGN, not a public homosexual stoning. For all we know, they could have been compelled to give this man his money because of his stance on illegal immigration and taxation or other conservative issues.
And even if they did give to support an anti gay campaign, wtf? The left wants to bully everyone into voting their way, but newsflash:
Being against illegal immigration does not equate to racism.
Not attending Save The Whales campaigns does not equate to animal hatred.
Being against same sex marraige does not equate to homosexuality…
tjr101
@EsOh: Did you and Chris Barron rehearse that nonsensical rant?
sfdj
Fuck you, Queerty.
JAW
@EsOh: #16
Well said… They forget to mention about Urban is that they are a public company… buy some stock and own a part of the company… PLUS the CEO of the Company is an out Gay man that has supported Gay friendly candidates who rany aganist Frother Mix… and beat him
as an FYI… I really hate Urban… just an odd place
UWSguy
As far as I am concerned, Miley finally really accomplished something in her career
Jack
@samthor: Agreed. At least she’s spreading awareness and just reminding her own audience. Queerty is kinda bitchy lately.
Chel
The writer of this article is Daniel Villarreal— i dont think he represents sanity or us well at all. You’te off base dude and a bit of a mess. Wake up new queerty, you’re writers are not what the old queerty was at all. Not amused and moving on.
Andrew
Ok, I would just like to ask who in their right mind shops at Urban Outfitters?
I hate that store. It’s like they took a consignment shop, multiplied the prices by 10, ripped, faded, and/or spilled paint on the clothes, and stuck it in your local suburban antiseptic mall-thing between two stores selling hats and overpriced candy.
No thank you, I’d rather shop at Goodwill.
Godiva
She spoke up to a demographic that had no idea this was going on. Why are you being so ungrateful? One salvia incident, and suddenly she’s completely disregarded? Come on, let’s take awareness wherever we can get it, people!
izizcz
I wish someone could explain to me why a person or a company is obligated to support gay anything? Is someone a Anti-Semite if they don’t support Judaism? If you don’t watch BET are you anti-black. Last I checked this is supposed to be a free country. Gays don’t have a right to dictate to someone else what they should support or believe in. If you don’t like their views then don’t shop there but painting them as the devil because they don’t agree with a sexual behaviour is ridicules
iDavid
Izizcz—- You obviously live the good life unblazened by minority life threatening status, but you don’t have to come across as just plain dumb. Support your local serial killer, see how far your kids get in school when they are wacked from bullying and suicide. Wise up buttahcup.
iDavid
PS in case your arrogance flew over the chicken coup, UO supports bigotry suppression of fine Americans and hate. If they were neutral I wouldn’t give a rats ass.
Georgia
Apparently I’m out of the loop. I had no idea about this UO shit.
Miley Cyrus is awesome.
Tanooki
Agreed on all points; she has a lot of fans that follow her and I think it’s admirable that she’s an ally and has brought up these kind of topics before to her fans. I’ll always support someone who supports us.
Thanks Miley, for being amazing.
TheRealAdam
They have some cute clothes there and I will continue to shop there as I please. Same goes for Target, etc.
TheRealAdam
@JAW: Thanks. It will be interesting to see what develops.
Jeffree
Problem with boycotts is that: 1) We have no way to reliably compare stores in similar categories: BigGayInc.’s report card on how companies treat their employees is a start, but it doesn’t capture corporate donations to PACS*, pol parties & campaigns—or to community organizations. Is AF any better than IO or the Gâp?
2) Unless a company knows that you’re boycotting them and why, then the ups & downs of the business cycle / economy are presumed to be the cause. If you’re going to boycott, then you’re best off sending them copies of receipts from what you spent at their competitor’s place, because otherwise they won’t know you took your business elsewhere.
* [Corp. donation disclosure laws vary from state to state, from what I’ve read]

This article is disturbing to me. Queerty, what a bitter, cynical stance you have taken towards an ally. More people are in the dark about this kind of stuff than you realize. Oh, and the worst part – you seem to be okay with dismissing the anti-gay sentiments that Cyrus calls out, but condemn the part where UO copies independent fashion designers. Fashion is more important to you than gay rights? Wow. As a gay activist, you make me cringe. This is the problem with the state of gay activism right now. People care way more about Kim Kardashian’s wedding and the “Who Wore it Best?” section of magazines than they do about the fact that we continue to live as second class citizens. Shame on you, Queerty. Shame.
