We’re not 100% sure what to make of this: Brittany Nicole “Nikki” Poteet, the reigning Miss Virginia in the Miss Universe pageant, has been accused by her roommate, Derek Powell, of attacking him and his boyfriend, threatening violence and using homophobic slurs.According to Think Progress, Poteet, 24, was extremely intoxicated on Saturday, when she went off on the group in the Richmond, VA, home she shares with Powell:
“[Poteet] seemed upset that she did not have the full house to herself. She responded by lashing out at Powell, his boyfriend Chris, and their friends, swinging her shoes at the group, pushing people, and claiming that her male companion would ‘beat’ their ass. Poteet kneed another person, ripped the door off of a family heirloom, and ‘downgraded people based on their physical appearance and economic status,’ Powell explains in his letter. The police were called, but it’s unclear if an official incident report was ever filed.
Other guests in the house confirmed Poteet’s behavior and language, but the perky blond denies she’s a hater: “The guy that’s in my pageant office is gay and he’s my best friend in the world, I talk to him every day,” she told ThingProgress. She claims he has no problem with gays and that Powell’s just trying to get attention for himself.
Representatives from the Miss Universe organization haven’t released a statement yet, but if Poteet loses her tiara, maybe she and Carrie Prejean can star in a reality show together?

Oooh, I just LOVE the old, “some of my best friends are gay,” defense. Just as damning as her attack is the fact that she was so intoxicated. What is the world of beauty pagents coming to when doxies such as Poteet can not only compete but win? Shocking, just shocking!

That the two current Virginian Senators are Mark Warner and Jim Webb, both Democrats, and that states have both conservatives and liberals, and that to suggest that everybody from one state acts a certain way because they’re from that state is ignorant?
People get drunk. Sometimes drunk people are mad. Sometimes mad drunk people are honestly bigoted. Sometimes they’re just mad and drunk. I don’t think I can pass judgement considering how little we know.

@TMikel: This is not like Palin or Bachmann claiming to have gay friends — we all know that is bullshit. In this case, though, she was co-living in a co-rented house with a gay housemate who has a boyfriend who stays at the house. Clearly she is not merely claiming to have gay friends, she does, or well did, until this event.
