Mitt Romney Mails Anti-Gay Marriage Message

You’ve got hate mail!

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney broke down and sent out direct mailings this week. And, as you can see, he’s hoping to rally social conservatives with some good old fashioned gay-baiting. Jonathan Martin of Politico fame reports:

For the first time, Mitt Romney is using direct mail to contrast his record with his GOP rivals. In a piece that has just hit Iowa mailboxes, Romney points out that he’s the only of the “leading Republican candidates” to support a constitutional ban on gay marriage.

The former governor pointedly ignores Mike Huckabee, who has emerged as his most serious challenger in the Hawkeye State and who supports the ban.

Asked why they were going on the offensive, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said, “The governor’s support for a federal marriage amendment to protect traditional marriage is what sets him apart from other candidates.

“Gov. Romney has been the most vocal advocate of protecting marriage from activist courts like the one in Iowa that has targeted the state’s Defense of Marriage Act,” Madden continued. “The information we sent to Iowa voters is part of our campaign efforts to let folks know Gov. Romney stands with them on the important issues.”

Surely it has nothing to do with Mike Huckabee’s steady rise in Iowa’s pre-caucus polls.
