He does have a point about it being good for the economy. Not the best worded, but a pretty decent response from a republican I think :)

I don't know why everyone is shocked that Arnie is hoping to boost his economy with legal gay marriage. It is very smart on his part. Let's face it, marriage is business for many people. That is a boost to the economy. That is a good thing. If only other states were as intelligent as California.

Or maybe that is what Arnie is alluding to? hmmmmm

I always wondered by the American Bar Association didn't lobby harder for marriage rights. Just think of the divorce potential. $$$

After 16years together, we are happy to be planning our wedding. And it's obvious to us that this will definitely have an impact on the economy and our wallets.

That's a lot of suppositions for a simple comment; made in the context of Schwartznegers refusal to congratulate people :"wish them well".(as you claimed Michael.):
Buffy: without access to the opinions and people and laws, I don't think that either of us can make generalizations; presumably , if you know anything about jurisprudence, decisions appropriately have less to do with politics and more with law. I don't know what that has to do with the Gov. For a "democrate", you do make some odd generalizations.

I have been around Republicans enough to know pretty inteligently what Reps. are about I do reserve the right to hold the opinions I do:

Since it may be short lived, I reserve the right to know and believe what I do, while we do barely have a Bill of Rights.

@ M Shane As a democrat I feel I should point out, that 6 of the 7 judges that handed out the ruling were mostly republican appointees. Which if you think about it, this is actually a conservative. Conservative in that the government has no business deciding who adult citizens can marry.

I think what some people feel is that when two people make a committment to a lifelong loving relationship, they do want to be reduced to a commodity helping boost the economy, although that may be a by-product. The problem with viewing marriage (or anything) in material, monetary terms, is that it diminishes the love and spirituality of the bond between two people. It robs us of what makes us human. But then again, he is an android.

I guess next he will be promoting more f**king so there will be more babies born who will need clothes, food, shelter, etc....

I can't stand Republicans and apologists for right-wing thinking, but I agree with Timothy's comment (#3). Schwarzenegger's been better than most on the issue of gay marriage for quite some time and has never been part of the Republican Party's Taliban wing. And I would imagine he knows many gay people from the worlds of both body-building and Hollywood, so I don't think he's insincere about wishing gay couples well.

I'm with Timothy. Regardless of your politics, if you can't see the simple, positive fiscal impact of gay marriage on a fleet of businesses, you're missing a major benefit of this societal advancement! This can only be good news for businesses both traditionally associated with marriages as well as new, non-traditional businesesses. Increased divorces - also good for the economy.

Wow, it really takes a cynical attitude to turn that statement negative.

He was at a conference about the economy and was asked about someone who wanted to marry. He tied the two together - wishing someone good luck with their marriage, welcoming others to come visit CA to get married, and joking about how it will help the economy.

I - being both a supporter of marriage and a supporter of a good economy - thought it was funny and also relevant. I'm sure that travel agencies, wedding planners, and hotels are all happy with the idea of visitors coming here to get married. And most of those businesses are supportive of gays.

But I guess if you are contractually required to hate all Republicans, then you can find something negative in anything.
