Monica Crowley, who used to have a job on MSNBC some years ago, now peddles her brand of absolute conservatism on Fox News. But even I was a bit aghast about how she handled news of Barack Obama deeming the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, and ordering the Justice Department to stop defending it. See, Monica doesn’t think this is a good idea, and not just because it essentially guarantees more rights for gays and lesbians, but because Obama is ignoring federal law, and “that is a form of dictatorship. That is Mubarak Obama.” But wait. Isn’t DoJ still going to defend DOMA? Yep! He’s just not going to use some convoluted legal theory to do it.
Elsewhere on Last Word, Glenn Greenwald stopped by to school America on what Obama’s new DOMA position really means.

Wouldn’t you know Fox News wouild jump on this? Crowley is just a typical right-wing cunt. When she disagrees with someting she resorts to childless name calling. These people are going to look like utter fools (as if they don’t already) in the next five or ten years when full-equality is the norm. They are fighting a losing batle. Unfortunately, there are still pockets of racial prejudice across the country, but their cause has become meaningless.
Peter
From a purely political point of view, this is the stupidest thing Obama could have done. He’s just given the Right a gift which they will use to defeat him.
justiceontherocks
@Peter: You couldn’t be more wrong. It’s great strategy. It mobilizes his base and distracts the Republicans by getting them to focus on losing social issues.
Peter
There are many gays who are deluded enough to believe he’s doing this for their tiny portion of votes. But he’ll lose a lot more in the middle. His advisers must be banging their heads against walls. Obama doesn’t owe the gay community crap, because no matter what he does they will despise him, and I’m speaking especially of the white gay community. I hope he enjoys being a one termer, because he just signed his fate with this nonsense.
Doesn’t Barack know that these people have no political power. They have never been able to get ONE victory at the voting box, in any state referendum. And their votes will not be enough to supplement the amount of votes that he will lose because of this. And they HATE YOU OBAMA!! Don’t you read the racist crap they say about you on their gay websites? They despise you because of your race! You are really making a mistake! Many of them will still turn around and vote for the Republican who wants to deny them their rights because their first allegiance is to their race, no matter that the white guy hates them with all of his heart. A quarter of them voted for McCain, who went on to say that their presence in the United States military will cause young men and women to lose limbs. The head of Goproud has decided he would rather support the white party than have civil rights.
They Worship the ground Bill Clinton (the man who gave them DADT and DOMA) walks on because he’s white. Why are you using political capital on these people. Well the last thing I can say is, start packing your bags Barry and Michelle, you just threw the 2012 elections for gay people who hate your guts. How dumb! I am heartbroken and disappointed in you Obama.

Peter, you may want to take off your tin hat and use it to wipe the Kool Aide away from your mouth.
LEts look at the facts…The White House was seen to not be overly supportive on the Base issues. Donations dropped and the Dems took a hit in the last election. Suddenly they are responding by being more open to issues of importance to their base.
Simple and straight forward, but please…don’t let that stop you from foaming at the mouth and talking in circles…it’s kinda fun to watch.

@Cam: You couldn’t be more wrong, the president took a hit becuase the job numbers were still terrible, add to that a contentious healthcare bill. Most presidents struggle in mid-terms including Regan, Clinton, Bush I, Bush II had 9/11 but took a shellacking latter. Like Clinton said “It’s the economy stupid.” You can’t win with just a liberal base in a center right country. You capture the center by keeping their pockets fat and they tend to forget about everything else.
@Peter: No one here is going to buy your race trash, nice try though. Which GOP presidential campaign are you representing.
Steve
Wow. For a network that only hosts conservative anchors and personalities and constantly attacks Democrats and Liberals, they sure are fair and balanced.
Perspectives
Well, for everyone who loves this kind of tyrannnical takeover of the 3 branches of government, where it is supposed to be the job of the Executive Branch ( White House) to defend laws and the job of the COURTS to decide consitutionality..
ok..next President needs to declare Roe-V-Wade unconstitutional and stop defending it.
BHO had the full ability over the last two years to address this. He didn’t. Think, folks, think. Why? Because he is just pandering to get our money….he knows we are easily fooled, wait for the donation letters to arrive.
If we are going to make the President “King” of everything, then the next one is also. If we are going to accept lawless for one president, then we have slipped into tyranny, and I will work to make sure there is a tyrant in charge who is my kind of tyrant.
Of course, we may not like the next tyrant who picks and chooses which law to follow and which not.
OR…we could stick to our laws, and go through our lawful process.
Tim
@Perspectives: So, of course, you support the immediate passing of civil union/marriage approval, because unless you do, you are asking people who are NOT protected under the law and are second-class citizens to defend laws YOU passed. Personally, and I speak as a Canadian where, despite marriage being legal, the laws are hopelessly contradictory, I would advocate not paying taxes until that is addressed.
justiceontherocks
@Perspectives: Every President at least going back to Reagan has refused to defend laws they thought were unconstitutional.
Obama didn’t change a law. The courts still have an opportunity to rule on the statute. There’s no abuse of power here.
Bruno
SOMEONE just graduated from the Ann Coulter School for Equine Comediennes. How cute!
Jay
by far the funniest thing is that she’s essentially saying “Happy Obama,” because “Mubarak” means happy/joyous.
So its a good thing that not defending DOMA makes Obama happy. Yay!
Paul
One day after this broke and already it is off the Fox News website. No mention of DOMA anywhere. Even they know it is just like justiceontherocks stated:
…. It mobilizes his base and distracts the Republicans by getting them to focus on losing social issues.
{…instead of union busting. [my addition])

Barack Obama’s Presidency has created a new breed of hate mongers. I think we need a new term… something like Race-tardedaphobes?
Soupy
Really not a new breed. They just wore white sheets and hoods before.

What is up with these silly bleach-blonde yammering airhead clone sorts blathering platitudes with the strange impression that we care what they have to say about issues that don’t involve them?
Peroxide overuse? Yes, Crowley has something relevant to say. Excess plastic surgery? Absolutely, her opinion has merit. Tacky polyester dresses? She’s an expert.
Gay marriage? Nope, nothing interesting to say.

Monica Crowley is actually a very intelligent woman, even though she’s a conservative, she always struck me as a thinking conservative. I remember seeing a wonderful interview of her on C-span talking about her time as Richard Nixon’s assistant, she spent his last years with him and wrote a very good book about it…I suppose when the money’s good enough she’s willing to act bimobo-ish! But she is no bimbo, she’s an educated (Ph.D. from Columbia University), intelligent and extremely articulate woman. Stop drinking the Fox Koolaid Monica, no amount of money is worth the loss of your self respect, or the respect of others who may have thought well of you in the past! I actually used to looked up to you…

Odd. Nearly all of the “white guys” I know, whether gay or straight, voted for Obama, including the ones who voted for Hillary in the primary (I’m in California and our primary was one of the first this year).

Thank you, Cam, thank you. I have watched the GLBT movement since 1974 and I can tell you, as a close observer, that the time draws near when this will be a non-issue and the GLBT platform of reform will be firmly in place. The students/voters/Progressives of today are growing in number every day, while the old codgers of the gnarling right are dropping in numbers. This ONE fact alone scares the right wing nutjobs to distraction. They know they’re losing their stance by the hour/day/week/month. Their power is dropping but not the volume of their screeching. It is the sound of the agony of defeat, if not tomorrow, maybe next week. We don’t know the exact time of victory… but it is inevitable for the GLBT population. So be it!

Everything’s been said that I would have said except this:
@Cam:, @B:, @Paul:, I agree. Thanks for keeping a clear head amidst the frenzy of the blogosphere.
@Dakotahgeo: I think you’ re new here, so, Welcome. I appreciate your perspective & analysis.

It’s a “form of dictatorship.” Ya. Sure it is.
