Morning Aural: Europe

Don’t be distracted by the 1986 synth awesomeness, Europe’s “The Final Countdown” has a serious message. We think. Consider these lyrics:

We’re leaving together
but still it’s farewell
and maybe we’ll come back,
to earth, who can tell?

Fleeing ecological disaster, perhaps? Europe does hail from Sweden, which has gone ga-ga for electric cars. Why isn’t Europe playing at Live Earth?

The song’s also appropriate because today’s Friday, so “The Final Countdown” is, quite literally, the final countdown to freedom. Also, it makes us think inappropriate thoughts about Will Arnett, who played Gob (pronounced “Job) on Arrested Development. Gob, of course, used “The Final Countdown” as his magical theme song. We’ve included two samples – and lyrics – after the jump. (Again, it’s Friday.)

We’re leaving together
but still it’s farewell
and maybe we’ll come back,
to earth, who can tell?

I guess there is no one to blame
we’re leaving ground (leaving ground)
will things ever be the same again?
It’s the final countdown.

The final countdown.

Oh, We’re heading for Venus (Venus)
and still we stand tall
cause maybe they’ve seen us
and welcome us all, yeah
with so many light years to go
and things to be found (to be found)
I’m sure that we’ll all miss her so
It’s the final countdown.

The final countdown.

The final countdown (final countdown).

oh…oh

The final countdown.

oh…oh

It’s the final countdown.

The final countdown.

The final countdown. (final countdown)

It’s the final countdown
we’re leaving together
the final countdown
we’ll all miss her so
It’s the final countdown (final countdown)
oh, it’s the final countdown.

Ah ah ah!! This song will never fail to make me laugh at the mere mention of its name. GOB is a genius.
